+Owismael You are right, but one Volvo model for example V40 with D4 engine should be counted in, because the car is also pretty decent in many ways except its handbrake. But they did not count. Anyway, nothing to do, just saying :)

After being with a company that had a significant number of BMW cars in the fleet everyone agreed that you would not want to own one outside of warranty.

Finally a decent winner, the 3 series! In my opinion, it sounds good too...

+Aristotelis Mitsiou (tkk7406) - lots of diesels 'sound good', usually as the audio is pipped into the cabin, too many BMW's sound like marbles on a washing spin cycle when idling. Even the Merc's & Audi's can sound odd, but the very latest engines are getting better

+Aristotelis Mitsiou (tkk7406) I own a 320d (it is absolutely amazing) and I agree. With full throttle at high rpms it sounds great. However, after a long period of time the roar can be irritating. So it is best to cruise quietly at lower rpms in higher gears for long journeys. I observed this with a lot of diesel cars but not too many petrols. All in all, I still like the noise of my petrol Suzuki more than any diesel I've tried

***** I own a 3 series but I'v driven an XE quite a few times now and there's still room for improvement, but I think it was more engaging to drive. As for reliability we've had Jags in our household for the last 13 years and never had one single issue.!

+Volvo2222 Scotland my dad's got the Xf and I know a few other XF owners and no problems at all. Jaguars reliability has come a long way in the last 15 years. They seem to be climbing up the tables in reliability surveys. They're definitely going in the right direction.

+Volvo2222 Scotland can't speak about LR as I don't really know anyone who owns one. I know in most surveys the Disco finishes near the bottom for reliability :(. I love my 3 series, but looking at maybe changing it for the XE-S in the next few years.

I think the Honda Civic Tourer with the 1.6 Diesel should have appeared somewhere in that list. Massive amounts of room 99g/km co2 over 70mpg, reasonably quick and refined.

Nope your wrong. It's the Ford Focus ST3. TDCi. Bloody brilliant car. Solid build and great balance of performance and economy. 67mpg and if you want fun it has 400nm of torque. 👍🏼

Can't believe the BMW 3 litre turbo diesel didn't get mentioned! Amazing performance and good fuel economy. Makes a nice sound too. In all the cars it's slotted in, the 640d is the best looking (in my opinion).

I think it is worth to mention that the BMW in the video has the old N47 engine, and the current F30 facelift has the new B47 engine which is much better. I own a 420d Gran Coupé with the new B47, and it is much quieter, and has better fuel consumption compared with the old N47 engine.

That is correct. The B47 is a wonderful engine and raises the bar higher. it has 6 more hp and 20 more nm of torque than the n47 and it still keeps it's economy!

Plus the N47 always had that timing chain issue didn't it? Costing owners £3k-£6k to fix once it had gone

BMW 320D awesome car, check service history as the timing chain was a nightmare up until about 2012. I’ve a 2009 good service history up until 145 Ks not miles. I’m doing 10 Ks oil Changes now. My economy average over 6 month is 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

peugeot 406 XUD engine should show up in the list...IMHO Its cheap...easy maintenance...has great torque...great fuel comsumption...and quite easy to increase power by just few modification And since this engine made from iron cast...its quite bulletproof and still had (potential) powers

I drove a Peugeot 406 with that engine, used as a taxi. We bought it with 118000 miles and retired it 8 years later with 451,000 miles! I agree mate, fantastic engines! Also had 405s, Citroen Xantias, Xsaras and ZXs with the same age engine. They ended up with huge mileages too!

Who made the decision to include Vw/Seat/Skoda considering what's going on right now with Volkswagen Groups #DieselGate? That was a bit of a poor choice.

+keanehgz Alpina D3 is indeed awesome, but it's not very cheap to buy and to run. Not too expensive either but more expensive then 320d. That doesn't mean 320d is better, Alpina is of course.

I was going to get a 3 series but many people I know stated that driving on icy roads, snow, and generally slippery roads, that the rear wheel drive is very dangerous on it's handling even when being careful. Would any one any one like to comment on this please, thanks.

+B007 VW rigged some emission tests with cars, that are no longer being sold. Other manufacturers made cars, which are completely unreliable and a nightmare to own, but are no longer being sold. Like for instance most french or italian cars from the last several decades. So which is worse? You decide. Also the diesel cars from the VW group pollute no more than diesel cars from all the other manufacturers from the same period. The only difference is, they used legal methods to fullfill the test requirements, while their cars still pollute just as much as the cars from the VW group in the real world. If you are actually concerned with the environment and health issues, you cant buy any diesel car, which does not use the Ad Blue technology. Because that is the only technology, which effectively reduce NOX emissions in the real world and not just in a completely irrelevant laboratory test. All diesels from the PSA group use Ad Blue technology now, and also most of the diesel engines in the VW Passat and Skoda Suberb. So these are actually some of the only clean diesel cars, you can buy today. To buy something much more polluting, because VW used illegal methods to rig the test, while others used legal methods to rig the test, seems rather irrational to me.

+B007 Emissions scandal or not, VW still makes some of the most economical diesel engines on the markets. And the 1.6 TDI Bluemotion featured here is not one of the DieselGate models anyway. Besides, not everyone gets worked up by that emissions scandal. Some people, like me, will still buy VWs.

Second they all lie about emissions , all of them Americans and Asians alike, the system is broken .Do some research. There are hundreds of articles on this subject. Where’s the ŠKODA Fabia Greenline 2? The ŠKODA Fabia Greenline 2 comes in a hatchback or an estate and both have a 1.2 3 cylinder Diesel engine producing 74 BHP and can do 94 MPG.

+Matthew Hall Petrol engines also pollute, it is just not recognized as it should (a filter, as in diesel, will come as mandatory 2017?), but surely will now when diesels are on the line! No is not just a diesel problem, it has been proven in tests!!! Full-electric is not an alternative for the masses (cannot be manufactured that much) so I hope diesel and petrol will stay for a while longer or only the rich people will be able to afford to get a car.

Not even a single TDCi, amusing after Fiesta is best selling car for over 5 years and with over 60% of sales being TDCi, also Focus 1.5 TDCi with 120 HP is just plain brilliant, easily gets over 70 mpg, fun to drive built solid, there is nothing wrong with it other than its back seat which is small for its class

I wish diesels could gain a foothold in the US market but I fear it’s far too late. Between VW’s diesel scandal and the popularity of gasoline hybrids Americans have no reason to want them. VW took them out of our market entirely and they were the only company offering them in any significant number! It’s too bad because they make so much sense for our large freeway network.

Why Skoda superb and not Octavia which slightly smaller, has better performance, does more MPG and is widely used by the public as well as taxi drivers?

530d best diesel car ever in my opinion: reliability, power, confort, looks like a legend, sounds great, RWD.. Much better than a 320d... I've got a 530d E39 remaped to 240hp.. I'll run this car until the very end, very few cars can compare and i'm not saying that because i own one, it's just great..

In Britain: Probably 5-15% more expensive to buy, the diesel itself about 5% more, but of course fuel consumption should be better

What was the criteria? Because the Golf has the same engine as the Skoda... and there are't any Korean cars (Kia/Hyundai), that have greate powerfull and economical engines and are greate value, no Renaults, but there is a Nissan (they share the same engine). Also there isn't any Merc or Volvo... I don't understand the criteria!
