I'm completely in love with Illmatic, and I don't usually listen to rap. But there's something about Nas, Pac and Biggie that makes it awesome to listen to. I think it's the authenticity, each lyrics these guys wrote came from the heart, and their skills are incredible. I would pick N.Y. State of Mind as well. It's funny that he starts out by saying "I don't know how to start this shit, yo.", and then goes on to drop one of the best rap songs ever produced.

  • @Frijolero18

Fun fact, that first verse was done in one take, hence the hesitation in the beginning. But yeah Illmatic is a masterpiece. I've only recently got into rap and only have about 7 albums so far and prefer Paul's Boutique and The Low End Theory, but I can't deny Illmatic is the best album I have.

There is a reason someone started bumpin Hypnotize during Biggies funeral procession, and the whole fucking crowd went from somber to PARTY mode in a matter of seconds. Hypnotize WAS/IS a better song. Juicy WAS dope, but that was MADE to be a radio hit, Hypnotize was just made to be a DOPE track.

They chose songs based on lyrical content, Production, record sales, and cultural impacts and California had pretty good rhymes, it was Dr. Dre produced, and it's 2pac's highest selling and most popular song. Plus it had a huge cultural impact as it is still played on radios and in lots of movies.

Actually I came here with an open mind to see what fans of rap consider to be the highest quality in the genre. If I'm honest, there aren't many songs on this list I particularly enjoy, but I can at least appriciate the skill that goes in to the delivery of the lyrics themselves.

The Nightmare Rider I appreciate this comment. But let me just say, Hip Hop gets a bad wrap (no pun intended) because of the absolute garbage that is today's mainstream Hip Hop. And while these songs are considered to be the "highest quality in the genre" by a lot of people, I don't consider them to be the highest quality in this genre. There are a lot more lyrically talented emcees out there than these ones from the 90s. And they aren't in the mainstream.

No, I like Juicy more than Hypnotize, however, I don't feel that either of them are Biggie's best songs. I get why Hypnotize is on this list, watchmojo takes into account popularity, commercial success, awards, etc. but as a song, it's not Biggie's best. And it's definitely NOT the 2nd best Hip Hop song of the 90s. Not even close, in my opinion.

Shook Ones Pt. II should've been #1, it redefined the game, and N.Y State of Mind should've been top 5 coming from the best rap album of all time. There should've at least been an honorable mention for Eminem's My Name Is.

Most people that hate Hip Hop are just extremely ignorant. Honestly, I would hate Hip Hop too if all I heard was the bullshit out in the mainstream today. But I've talked to so many people that have told me they hated Hip Hop, and after we talked, they either started to enjoy it, or they, at the very least, respected it. There are so many artists out there that are really, really talented. Trust me. Hip Hop is a beautiful genre. And by the way, I am a music fan. I love almost every genre of music. I listen to everything. Yes, Black Star is in my KZread name, but it's only because I happened to be making a KZread account while I was listening to Black Star, and I was struggling to come up with a good name. So this is coming from somebody that loves music, not only Hip Hop.

I'm sitting here reading some of the comments and all it says is "where's Eminem?" And "where's 'my name is?'" I just want to say that I love Eminem's music and lyrical formality but he didn't get good until the 2000's, so people stop waisting your time on all of these questions! And those of you who don't like Eminem, don't reply to the damn comment because all you're doing is starting a fight that no one gives a shit about!

I think that's a lie in my opinion! The Slim Shady EP and LP was when Eminem was at his best in terms lyricism and wit in his writing. MMLP was good, but at times he was just bitching and trying to be offensive on that album. Eminem only had two good albums in the 2000s and all the others in that decade were absolute garbage.

Eminem is like Michael Jordan. While Tupac and B.I.G fight for the number 2 and 3 spot, like Magic and Larry, Eminem just sits back and relaxes from the top. I don't know much about Rap, but the one thing I know is that Eminem is king.
