Dale Earnhardt Sr. is considered by many to be the greatest NASCAR driver in history. He’s definitely a lot of people’s favorite driver. Sadly killed in a crash in the final turn of the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. He was nearing the end of his career, although many believed that 2001 would’ve been a big comeback for his career. He’s definitely missed by many in the sport.

At least his death wasn't totally in vain. It's what forced NASCAR to take an even bigger look at driver safety. Safer barriers and mandating the HANS device have saved countless drivers. As sad as it was losing someone as famous and loved as Dale was the only thing to break the stigma of "well racing is dangerous and if you die well that's sad but it's part of racing"

He mentioned Daytona, Talladega, and Restrictor-Plates several times. Those are weird scenarios in NASCAR. Daytona and Talladega are massive 2.5+ mile tracks and much bigger than most if not all other tracks on the circuit. The result is that cars can go flat-out all throttle, and that results in overly dangerous speeds. That's where the restrictor plates come in. For those huge tracks, they have to put a plate on the engines to limit horse power (I think it limits air intake, but might be wrong). It results in some weird racing like pairing up and drafting where the one car in front punches through the air resistance while the trailing car literally pushes the front car. I prefer the 1.5 mile tracks where there's moderate breaking in corners, etc., but these are interesting and maybe worth looking into if you're curious.

Correct on the limited intake. We still call it restrictor plate racing just because we're not good at changing, but nowadays there's no plate, they just use a lower horsepower engine for the superspeedways.

The actual length of the track is vastly less important than the configuration and the banking. Needless to say if you have any questions of this and obviously I'm assuming you're aware of Atlanta's new setup which is identical in racing-style to these two big dogs you speak off!

The fastest speeds in recent decades have actually been in California and Michigan, 2 big tracks without restrictor plates, was fun to watch qualifying runs at Michigan in the mid 2000s, cars touching 210mph at the end of the front stretch.

Daytona 500 is the opening race of the season. NASCAR goes from 3rd Sunday in February to the 2nd Sunday in November. So a lap at Daytona can be anywhere from 46.50 secs to 48.50 secs. Most NASCAR cup races are from 300-500 miles in length.

To answer your question about the engines, for the last 40 years or so the engines have been 358 cubic inch (just under 5.9L) V8s. Many teams built their own engines or bought them from some of the bigger teams. Several different rules packages have changed the engines a bit like the addition of electronic fuel injection, but the overall size of the engines has stayed the same for many years.

@20:40 ish. There are 36 teams that own "charters" which allows them to race in every race in the season (some rules they have to follow to keep the charter, but this system was created to allow teams to sell charters when they "fold up shop"), but the rules state that upto 40 cars can actually race any given race. Daytona, and a few others important races, usually see 40+ cars "try" to get into the race, because its the biggest most important race, and if they win it (Winning gets you a ticket to the playoffs), then you can get more funding to attempt a full season. (sponsors like play offs) So since only 40 cars can race, and 36 of them are for the charter guys, that leaves 4 open spots to any race. This year, 42 cars showed up to get into the 500, 2 had to go home before the race even started. Jimmy Johnson, was one of the open cars and managed to get into the race (he's not racing fully time anymore.)

Jr. owns his team Jr Motorsports (NASCAR's F2), DirtyMoMedia (Racing, mostly NASCAR podcast company), The CARS Tour (Late Model Stock Touring series in the South), and is an analyst for NBC's portion of the broadcast schedule. Jeff Gordon is a part owner of Hendrick Motorsports and runs the team 2nd only to Mr. Rick Hendrick himself. - Currently there are no women in the Cup Series, but in the Truck Series, Haillie Deegan races the full schedule an I believe Jennifer Jo Cobb and Jessica Friesen (wife of other part-time Truck Series driver and 5 time Super DirtWeek winner, Stewart Friesen) make occasional starts.

Currently there are not any women in the top flight of NASCAR. You were thinking of Danica Patrick who came over from Indy, and it is the end of the Indy 500 where the drink milk. There is a woman Halie Deegan (sp?) in the Truck series right now and a few women scattered amongst the lower levels, but none currently in the top 2 series as regulars

Sadly for us gentlemen, Dale Jr, Jeff Gordon, and another one mentioned Dale Jarrett, have all retired, even the one from the fight video that you made the comment about punching in the nose, Clint bowyer, has also retired, and so has Kevin harvick. The new talent pool however does have some real but I'll call roosters in that hen yard. Such as Chase Elliott, Ross Chastain, William Byron, Denny Hamlin is still racing, and every once in awhile when they have specific races on road courses, F1 drivers will take a ride in NASCAR. Pique has, so has Grosean. Christian fittipaldi has raised in NASCAR, and there's even been drivers from the V8 supercars that have driven in NASCAR and had success. Boris said is one of my favorites, even though he comes out of road racing and SCCA, and personally I would love to see Fernando Alonso come over and give this a shot. There's even an episode that was filmed where Lewis Hamilton came over and he and Tony Stewart swapped rides and did it at Watkins Glen on the old F1 circuit there. And if you know your history you'll know that Tony Stewart used to also drive Indy cars and was a champion in that series and is a three-time champion in NASCAR. He can drive anything that has a steering wheel. NASCAR now has a street circuit that they race in Chicago. And guess what, S. van Gisbergen, a talent from the V8 supercar circuit. Won that race, his first time ever driving in NASCAR Juan Pablo Montoya drove for several years in NASCAR. In fact NASCAR also races at the Canadian tire Motorsport Park in bowmanville Ontario. This board is not quite so regional as people think it is but I am also an F1 fan and I have to say it but my favorite driver is Fernando Alonso but I also love Carlos Sianz Jr. Checo broke my heart when he retired. It's my hope that one day NASCAR gets the recognition that F1 gets on the global level. Because it's funny to me how they do tend to blend every once in awhile and it has been mostly a successful thing.

Speeds hit 200 mph and average around 160-180 mph. They are inches apart because the air from the front car is pushed over the cars behind it. The front car is basically pulling the cars behind it. It’s called the draft. Dale Earnhardt claimed he could see the air flow, which made him so good in the super speedways. When the second place car goes to pass and gets out of the draft it’s like hitting a wall.

I think the absolute best era for Nascar was the late 80's through the early 2000's. After that the rules became extremely restrictive, effectively making every single car pretty much identical (spec wise). Today's rules specify an engine displacement no greater than 358ci. So they run 358ci V8's that are tuned to 750hp on 1mile or shorter tracks and 550hp on tracks longer than 1m. Most of the restrictive rule changes came as a result of increasingly dangerous high speed crashes (cars were starting to fly) so Nascar decided to actually make the cars slower/safer. Also, the long races are actually pretty damn physically taxing. Drivers routinely lose 10lbs or more during the long hot races. Travis Pastrana is racing at Daytona today for the first time!

Track is 2.5 miles. Restricer plates are plates under the carburater that restrict oxygen to the engine, delays acceleration and lowering top speed, thus, most cars have virtually the same top speed. This makes the aerodynamics very important and the 2nd and 3rd cars actually are faster than the lead car causing a vacuum between front and rear of the cars and buffeting left to right. (I and many fans and drivers HATE this). I wish they would have smaller engines, and or smaller transmissions to reduce speed instead of restricter plates. Kind regards, Scott Rowland

27:40 ish. Nascar is completely the opposite. The cars are in garage stalls right next to each other like with just enough room between each car for a person to walk. And the fans have full view/access by either a fence, or glass walls, that have slits in them for fans to get autographs from team members/drivers. The cars got so fast in late 1980's that they could fly into the stands during a wreck if the air pressure lifted them from under, (the speeds were reaching 220 MPH

The average speed at Daytona and Talladega is 200+ mph. Jeff Gordan, Dale Jr, and Jimmie Johnson have been retired for several years. Although Jimmie is driving in this years 500. NASCAR popularity has gone down a lot since all the big names left. Some of the other races don't even have 50k people attend.

Dale Earnhardt Jr is not racing anymore. He's in the booth. Jimmie Johnson returned this year after two years and will be in the field in 45 minutes when the green falls. No, teams just don't have two. Some teams have 1 some have 2 some have more.

NASCAR used to be faster at Daytona. In 1987, Bill Elliott set the fastest qualifying speed at 210.364 mph. That same year he post the fastest lap every in NASCAR while qualifying for Talladega at 212.8 mph. The next year, NASCAR required teams use restrictor plates to slow the cars down. This is why drafting is so important at the super speedways. The cars running at the front are mostly going flat out, no braking and no lifting of the throttle.

Yeah the Daytona 500 and my hometown track of Talladega are outliers (along with Atlanta now), and I hate those races. They race road, short, mile-and-halves, etc, and I'm meant to just watch 500 miles of pack racing

NASCAR used to be great when crew chiefs could find ways to get extra speed from their cars that technically didn’t break the rules but now it’s all cookie cutter cars that are all the same. They have taken all the innovation out of it. Then there is how you can’t even adjust the spoiler to change the down force. It just hasn’t been racing anymore. Nowadays I go to old races on KZread to get my nascar fix. So sad. RIP Smokey Yunic!!!!
