I don't get what's puzzling about this, all a band has to do is realize that a different sound sells better than what they're making, and switch to that sound. Examples of these are legion, the most egregious one I would argue is Genesis, how they changed from creative progressive rock in the 70s to commercial pop in the 80s, and literally admitted they did that because they wanted "money and girls".

@HAAKHA i think it's the power of advertisement and mass media, if the production really wants to sell your album can use those 2 and they can make a big difference, but you have to follow some standards. Your music became a literal entertainment product that follows the market rules and statistics researches. Filmmaking has this art industry too. Anyway i'm not judging anyone, if the art is good then i'm fine with it.

You could add to the Metallica one with people who say "All of their success was Cliff Burton. He actually did everything. Wrote everything. Performed everything. It’s so silly. Sure, there’s a lot of truth to the idea that Cliff was a talented bass player whose knowledge of music theory contributed to their early sound, and it’s tragic that he does so young. However, he wasn’t this crazy genius some people seem to think he was. And yea, it’s also true that Dave contributed to their early sound and that some of his music appeared in the first two albums. However, the main song writers and overall driving force of the band has always been James and Lars. I don’t know why people are so quick to dismiss that.

I've listened to and played a lot of classical music since I was first trained on the piano, and the reason why I got into metal in the first place was because of power metal and symphonic metal, the two main subgenres that fully embraced a neoclassical sound. Hell, even some melodic metalcore/death metal carries some bit of classical undertone in certain songs.

Some subgenres are more like classical than others. Comparing tech-death and progressive metal to classical? I'd say this is a fair comparison since there is massive overlap. This made me so uncomfortable cause this is literally how I acted when I was 12/13😭💀 That was when I really started getting into the metal community and unfortunately I just copied what other “metalheads” were saying online, which is actually really sad because it shows how horrible people can be and how easily young kids can be influenced by shitty behaviour. Luckily I grew out of that phase and nowadays I couldn’t care less about what type of music people listen to as long as they enjoy it, I listen to 80s synth-pop all the time for example. I actually went to see Depeche Mode with my mum last month and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to :)

You should make a video about things metalheads say about female metalheads and musicians. Cause dang. It's often either they are obsessed with female musicians for being hot to an utterly insane level, or that they still deny women can be real fans and musicians. Other funny ones are like how people act like Jinjer is so unusual for having a female vocalist, when Arch Enemy was doing that a decade, and there are even older bands than that which had harsh female vocals like Krisis and Cadaveria. It's not a rare technique for women, it's accessible for both genders. But also, many bands have women who can do harsh vocals and sing really well, the two techniques are not mutually exclusive. And back in the day people mocked Angela Gossow for her harsh vocals, now Tatiana is praised, she's a great vocalist but the other women deserve recognition too. Also the whole thing with Myurkur was ridiculous, they assumed she wasn't a real metal fan just cause she sang some pop music before. And when it's a pretty woman they say she's only in metal for her looks, but then women not conventionally attractive can be mocked, such as Sarah Jezebel Deva was for being plus size. And worse yet if a woman doesn't play a song they like, then it's comments about how women don't belong in metal and such. For material, just peep the comments on female led bands, especially the ones I've listed, and reviews on sites like encyclopaedia metallum.

I'll be honest sometimes people who say that shit don't quite know how ridiculous they look when sayin those type of stuff, but most likely they saw their parents, friends doing it and thought to their selves that it's just the common sense you know. The sad thing is the fact that this video basically showcases "avarage metalhead behavior 2023". VIdeos like yours feels necessary cause the community needs to evolve, if we keep repeating what 70's/80's metal fans say, we'll keep that marginalized image. Modern metal just cannot rely exclusively on the legacy of bands such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Motorhead. I'm sayin all that bullshit cause some of the most open minded people I've came to know are metalheads them selves, but still, we can't have a modern culture with such outdated values. Now, I have to say, I am guilty of this, too. Sometimes I wear a band shirt, and sometimes-sometimes people address it; "Hey wow, I'm a huge fan!" - Yeah? What's your favorite song? If they reply with 'Nothing Else Matters' or 'Sweet Child of Mine' or something like that, I just *know* it's not a *real* fan, like myself.. But then, I was at a Metallica Concert in Amsterdam a few weeks ago; but nobody really responded to the stuff from their new album. So, they started playing Nothing Else Matters - and the entire stadium just loved it. Except me, I'm headed for the bar. I get sour; 'This is not their best song, it's just the one they recognize from the radio.' But the other 'real fans' didn't get sour, they sang along with their lighters up and whatnot. Fun thing: Metal IS the closest thing we have from classical, and you can hear that in music universities, but this does not mean that metal is like classical music. Metal just uses more exotic elements that are present in classical music than other genres. But if you want to know who makes things with a more complex instrumental, then you're talking about jazz.

When I was in my (bad) metal band back in MySpace deathcore popularity days, I would write riffs that the other members said sounded too “classical”… but like I never know what people mean when they say that exactly. Basically what happened is I learned how to play that one “wintersun” riff and they only wanted black dahlia riffs. Love your vids lol

IMO the best deathcore bands were Veil of Maya (in 2008), Here Comes the Kraken (2008/2009), The Bride (2006/2008) and Thy Art is Murder's Infinite Death. All found on Myspace and all still loved to this day for their technicalities. There are definitely some I've missed but those are what spring to mind.

I sometimes catch myself saying "their earlier stuff was better". But if I think about what makes works of e.g. 70s Priest, late 80s/early 90s DM or debut Metallica and Slayer so special for me it comes down to two things. First, this is probably true for a lot of bands when they start out, there is something innocent but raw about it, they probably didn't care much whether the mainstream likes their music as long as the crowd in front of them banged their heads out, sometimes they might not know what they were doing at all. Second, this is probably more true for the 70s/80s or new styles in nascency, sound hasn't been "streamlined". Back then they often made due with what they had or thought was right for their vision, resulting in probably imperfect but unique even over the top (looking at you Tampa and Stockholm) tones. So these early records often stand out sound wise, not saying necessarily better but maybe more memorable.

Metalica was in kerrang magazine looking for lead singer. James just wanted to play guitar. Back then band were into jamming, coming up with ultimate riffs. Dual harmonizing.

And isn't it funny how often you come across that gatekeeping argument while you don't see actual gatekeeping nearly as often? I mean, I grew up on late 70's heavy rock and NWoBHM, and I still listen to all kinds of stuff (including Metalcore Symphonic metal and Pop Metal, mind you) and most of the concerts I go visit are bands that didn't even exist 20, ten or even 5 years ago. With all that ongoing bullshit against "boomers" and "gatekeepers", you would assume that I'm the exception to the norm, but luckily that couldn't be farther from the truth. There's tons of fans like me who won't let their age limit their willingness to explore and experience new and modern stuff. Unless it's A7X, those guys I love to ignore with a vengeance. :D
