    Correction- we can resize the ebs volume without stopping instance or detaching the volume.

    Thank you pointing this out. You are correct but as a good practise, we need to stop the instance and then resize the volumes. Now why do we need to do that - What if you are running jobs in the background that uses these volumes to store the data. If we do not stop the instance, there are high chances that we might lose data during the resize. So to maintain the data integrity and make sure we do not lose any data and as a good practise, we can stop the instance and then resize the volumes.
