I’m old enough to remember Super Friends on Saturday morning. Even the beginning before the Wonder Twins when we had Wendy Marvin and Wonder Dog.

Right! The show was before my time unfortunately, but being a late 80s/early 90s kid, we had no shortage of fantastic comic related shows to watch.

This is crazy. I just picked up daredevil #170. At my LCS and found it in the $0.50 bin. I you never know what you might find if you don’t spend the time digging.

Having worked in a comic book store in the early to mid 1980s I want to set the record straight on newsstand vs direct. It’s well known that the later newsstand copies are rarer. Some people have correctly pointed out that in the early years the direct edition copies were actually rarer because there were fewer comic book stores. Yes, this is true of the early direct editions… maybe. Sometimes. Because you have to remember, newsstands had less control or concern about what they received. A comic book store however would heavily order a book if it was expected to be hot. Take, for example, Wolverine mini series #1 by Frank Miller 1982. Still pretty early in terms of direct market which started around 1978 or 1979. But this isn’t just any comic. It’s Wolverine #1, hot character by a hot popular artist. Comic book stores ordered thousands of copies. I could be wrong but I would expect the direct copy to be far more common than the newsstand version whereas the Wonder Woman or the Fantastic Four that came out the same month I’d expect the reverse and the direct copy would be rarer. Daredevil was a poor seller when Frank Miller came on board, but became the hot book around the time Elektra came along. Daredevil was probably a hot enough seller by issue 170 for comic book stores to order extra copies to meet the demand of the new hot book. Did they order enough to overcome the greater average ratio of newsstand to direct? Tough call. It certainly wasn’t ordered at Wolverine #1 levels but that’s one that might be pretty close. The best way to determine for any particular issue is to see what’s out there, but there’s no certainty that before or after a certain date, the direct is rarer or less rare. It absolutely varies book by book with the hottest books (at the time, not today) being more common direct early on. A different example, Thor 337 I would expect direct to be rarer than newsstand because, although it was hot, it was a surprise hot book. Comic stores had no idea it was going to sell any better than Thor 336 and they underordered badly.

Gore Shriek 1 is probably one of my favorite covers of all time. I'm surprised that it doesn't have a bigger following, but that probably has something to do with the level of obscurity with that title. Great video as always!

I've always been curious about Evil Ernie. Never read one. I have most of the books on this list in my PC. Picked up mid grade copy of Superfriends #1 for a buck at a yard sale my wife dragged me out to about 10 years ago. I do need that Wolverine 53 though. Not for Deadpool but just for Wolvie and so that I have both parts. Never seem to come across it out in the wild and Ebay prices are stupid. The White Tiger was one of the first non-traditional heroes I was exposed to as a boy. I was reading PP Spec right off the rack in Elementary School. Always thought the character was pretty cool. Great work Drew. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the video Drew. Fun list of attainable books to be on the lookout for at upcoming Comic-Cons. The Spider-Man, with White Tiger, has been a favorite of mine from that run. If Disney does put the character in DD, I REALLY HOPE they do HIM justice. Keep up the good work; looking forward to the next video.✌️

Perez killed it on that cover. The red background is such a great contrast to the White Tiger’s costume. Definitely some Kirby vibes in the layout too. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, I suppose.

@@CoMoComicBooks You're probably right. I think comic writers got too far away from Paul Dini's vision of the character. The recent movies weren't all that great, either. I'm definitely more of a Classic Harley Quinn fan.
