What is the best equipment to carry for short 2-3 night bushcraft style, wild camping trips? We have been asked this question many times, over the years and have now come up with a comprehensive list of equipment that we would suggest is the minimum for a comfortable, safe and productive trip.
This kit list is catered towards the temperate, British climate but is useful for many environments and climates. This kit wil be particularly useful for woodland environments.
Any outdoor/survival kit worth its salt should cover all the basic needs of survival which are : shelter, fire, water, first aid, food, signalling and navigation. The following list comprehensively covers all these necessities whilst still being minimalist, to save weight.
A note on clothing - Moisture wicking baselayers close to the skin will maximise comfort and performance. Trousers and tops appropriate to season. Outer water proof layer for rain/sleet/snow/wind protection (we would recommend a poncho as they are lightweight, versatile and will stop your bag getting wet too). For colder conditions, we would suggest another thermal layer as opposed to a single, thicker, garment. Layering clothing is more effective as it allows for greater temperature regulation across a spectrum of conditions. A good pair of lightweight, durable boots which offer lots of support is invaluable. A warm hat and pair of gloves is a must in most seasons. A spare hat for sleeping and rest is a great idea! Remember, your clothes are your first line of defence against the elements.

Did the video get cut off on my end or something? The video title is "Top 10" and the description shows 10, but there's not 10 items shown in the video I just watched. It's missing 4 things on the list.

I see a lot of over-engineered, high-priced stuff entering the picture. It used to be a $15 Mora, a Bic lighter, and a wool blanket were all you needed to have a great time in the wild.

The AquaQuest tarp is quality stuff. I want one to replace the one I currently carry. I have the Uberleben stove - it's good but takes practice to set up a few times before you can do it in your sleep (for morning coffee!). It stays in my car, but I carry a MSR PocketRocket stove and fuel can, or a titanium Esbit stove into the woods. The IDEA behind the video is solid - knives, tarps, sharpening, filters etc. But this video is a commercial. Uberleben makes nice ferro rods - I own several.

my personal list would be: becker bk2/5/7/9 (any or all of them are absolutely BEASTS when it comes to price/ quality ratio) with either Mora companion/bushcraft or Old hickory 5.5inch hunter knife and folder ( i carry spyderco/byrd raven2 and/or Opinel No.10), hultafors bruk/fiskars X10, katadyn Combi for base and sayer mini for personal use, Helikon bergen/ EDC for one day trips, DD hammock and 10x10 tarp and that's most of it.

The Aquaquest tarp is supposedly good quality - I have a Coalcracker Bushcraft one, but I really want this one - it has more features. I have the Uberleben stove - it works well, though it's kinda hard to put together - takes practice.

  • @seththemess1

The knife in this video isn't a good bushcrafting knife, the steel is good but the fact of the matter is it has a v edge. A good bushcrafting knife has either a convex edge or a scandi grind. For the same price you could buy a mora garberg and be alot better off because that knife is an actual survival knife. It's built to withstand whatever you can throw at it and still come out as good as when you bought it.

A few of these caught my eye but I was kind of disappointed in the video overall. Sorry but I know you can do better and the knife and axe are over done (everyone is showing those). Matches were kinda a cheap shot... they sell them everywhere and are never as good as they seem (might as well tried to sell me a Bic lighter).
