As a former bicycle road racer and mountain biker as well as 10 years of adventure racing, along with motorcycle motocross and observed trials, I can say the bias against e-bikes by some bicycle "Purists" and trail builders is totally unfounded. These are not motorcycles, but bicycles with assist. The pedal action is not the same as twisting a throttle as far as "tearing up the trail" goes! I find I can get as good a workout with an e-bike as I do on my Moots 29er mountain bike. I can go further in less time and climb more. Every "Purist" I've met who's against e-bikes has either zero or little time riding one.

@@TheHarleyrulz I got the haibike full 7 lt in Feb 2020. It has the Bosch cx motor with power tube 500 battery. It has been super dependable. Not a problem. Only regular stuff, replace chain, brake pads, rear sprocket set. Mine has the small front sprocket they stopped making in 2020. It wears fast and has idler sprocket. Replaced those bearings too. Over 2k miles on weekends. Battery life still great. Happy hunting!

There are so many positives to having an E bike. I converted my mountain bike with the Hilltopper ebike kit. At first it greatly extended my riding range. I began to venture farther from my house. It has a 10 mile range. Now I could make the trek more easily to the nature park 6 miles away. Now it's so great to run an errand or go to the grocery store quickly and return quickly. If I have a little more time or I'm in the mood, I will pedal to the grocery store and back. But I would say the best thing about my converted ebike is now much longer pedal rides, knowing i can motor home! I pedal out to the other nature reserve, which is 9 miles away. And then about a 4 mile pedal around. And then I can pedal back home or motor home, depending on how I feel. A couple of weeks ago I did the full pedal. It was awesome. This past Saturday, I peddled out and peddled around the reserve. And then I motored home. Having an ebike is so versatile! Only pluses! 👍🏽

It took me 3 years to persuade my son that an E-MTB is the way to ride. Pushing your bike up a steep hill or even worse getting a pick-up to take you to the top, is not riding. He gets it now and is into his third E-MTB. Let's talk motors, so my first E-Bike had a Gen 3 Bosch CX and it was ruined by water ingress within 1,500 miles, it was replaced under warranty with another 24 months guarantee. I sold it for very nearly what I paid for it in lock down. Then I bought a bike with a Shimano E6000 motor, and I think it was a 504 Wh battery. The motor was gutless, and the battery used to die within a few miles of it showing two bars. On my 60th birthday last year I bought myself an Orbea Wild FS H25 with a 625 Wh battery and a Bosch CX Gen 4 motor. It's been brilliant and I've covered just over 3,000 miles on it. I have made some changes to it, to replace some of the less reliable components. The biggest spend was on wheels as the supplied Shimano hubs had unsealed bearings. I now have Hope Pro4 hubs on Fortus rims built by a well-known UK Bike Shop. The only other parts I've had to replace is, chains, cassettes, brake pads and discs (rotors if you are from the USA). I have checked all the suspension bushes, forks and rear shock and they are all working spot on with zero maintenance other than torquing the bolts. I am still using the original dropper post which is said to be poor quality, I weigh 98kg around 16 stones and it's been faultless. I have done extensive research on motor reliability and found out the Bosch CX gen 4 is top of the list. Brose has had some bad press, but even though they've sorted some issues it appears they are unreliable. Shimano appears to be at the bottom of the reliability list which surprises me. Yamaha are just above Shimano in the reliability stakes.

One of the better overviews on KZread that I've seen. Everything about this video is done well, from clear audio that has a light background music that doesn't compete with your narration, to your presentation that is quick, concise and full of valuable info. I wish that more KZread presenters would be more like your channel... Both my road and mountain e-bike it's a total blast without the time investment. Years ago I used to put in 300 miles per week. It was fun, especially when I had young legs, but it took hours and hours. Now that I'm older and need to devote more time for my work. My e-bikes allows me to get our more often. If it wasn't for e-bikes most likely I wouldn't be getting exercise daily. One other thing that I couldn't do on my traditional bike is to go shopping. I'll put on my backpack travel 9 miles each away to my local Costco and return back with 40 pounds of groceries. On average I'm logging 2000 miles per year. Much of those miles would have been on a car. As I like to say, I'm going Green and saving on the Green.

I just purchased the Giant Trance e+3 a few months ago. Previously, my fit buddies would invite me on epic rides which I would always bail on because I wasn't in shape. Now I keep up with them and give myself just enough assist to keep up (I'm still working bloody hard). At the top, I have the energy left in the tank to be focused on the downhill. I've never been more happy riding a bike. Also, one major benefit of this e-bike in particular is that because it's heavy, it stays really planted on the downs and plows through everything. So much fun!

Great list! I'd been saving up and also sold my Ripley to go towards an ebike so I got an Oso. Should be here in two days! It was between that, a used 160e, the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay, and the Scott Ransom eRide 910. The 160e sounds a little exhausting if you're not hauling ass downhill and has that really noisy EP8 motor, the Powerplay has too low of a bottom bracket (lots of big rocks on the trails here in Phoenix), and the Ransom eRide is only available in the 920 version here in the states. Tried seeing if I could get one from overseas but it's too much of a headache. Looking forward to putting some miles on the Oso!!

73 y. o. ; been riding e-bikes for 6 years. First bike was a 2016 Haibike Sduro I got on sale for $3,100, as it was a clearance bike. I put >4K miles on on that bike before selling it. Since then, I've had 2 Giants which both had electrical issues, and am currently riding a Trek Rail 5 and a Luna X1 Enduro. The Rail is a '22 model I have modified to my preferences. Fork upgraded from 160mm to 170mm, and a coil shock to replace the standard air shock. I love this bike and am impressed with the quality. The Luna X1 Enduro is a rocket. Technically, it is a Class 3 as I removed the throttle. It was only $4.5K out the door from Lunacycles in El Segundo (CA). It's got 95nm of torque, and 2Kw battery. This bike hauls ass. I can easily leave my buddies behind if/when I want to. I know this video is all about Class 1 bikes, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from checking out the Lunacycle lineup; their mtb's are carbonfiber and they are equipped with Bafang motors, which are very reliable. Also, I have had excellent customer service from Luna when I required it. Anyway, it's just a thought. Happy trails.

I agree the Trek Rail 5 is a great choice at its price point - but I’d go as far as saying 80% of us don’t need 160mm or more of travel or a set up that’s more enduro than cross country . I seriously considered buying the Trek rail 5 in red / black but as a Scott customer for years I purchased the Scott Strike eride 930 - mostly because Iv always loved the ability to change my suspension on the fly via the handle bars which being a cross county / street rider gives me huge advantages and the spec of the bike is still impressive while allowing me options to upgrade parts etc .

I'm 60 and have been on eMTBs for over 3 years now. I ride almost everyday because the machine is so damned addictive. The ONLY drawback to eMTBs is the parts wear and maintenance which can get expensive. I have learned that some forks and shocks can be problematic for service and maintenance so, be aware of this when spec-ing out your purchase. I've put over 20,000km on my Powerfly and it is pretty much worn out so, this video has turned out to be kinda' useful. Thanks!

Great video. I am 50 and in decent shape for 50. Can climb 14 minutes straight shot. Better than most average people. Worse than many riders. I like the gruelling climbs. But I get more workout and out of breath of the descents on the North Shore. I am good for 2, maybe 3 climbs and an hour and a half riding. There are large parts of these mountains like Fromme that I simply will never see on an acoustic (just on KZread). Have a kid and job. No time. Again - I am in ok physical shape. Would like to ride longer.

I also live in Fl. My husband and I just got EMTB. For starters don’t listen to the people who say you don’t need one in FL lol. I went with the Marin Alpin E1 and my husband went with the YT decoy 2 29 in (not mullet) He loves his bike and has no complaints. My only thing with my bike is it’s almost a little too aggressive on the geometry. FL has a lot of root filled uphills and I get a lot of tire pop ups while going up but I’ve just gotta get used to a bigger more powerful bike. There definitely confidence boosters compared to our analog bikes.

Since long covid, my ability to ride my old bike is limited to maybe 2-3 mile rides, at most, with 2-3 day recovery. I am not looking at ebikes because I miss riding and I miss my friends who ride and I miss being out there. I will get the mean looks from the purists but an ebike will now enable me to ride again!

I dont quite get where the number one spot for the Marin comes from. Compared to the number 3 spot Propain literally every spec aside from the battery is worse for only 200 dollars less. The Propain is the only bike to offer a full GX drivetrain, also it has one of the best suspension setups on this list - not to mention the tiny sram Guide brakes some of these come with. Honestly the only other bikes that impressed me value wise are the Commencal and the Polygon. Still I really liked the video and loved that you also put neat little bits of information about e-bikes in general between the bikes.
