Top 10 Best James Bond Stunts

This was a really tough list to put together. Some of the stunts are big, some are small, all required a good deal of skill and bravery to pull off!

I agree! That stunt is one of my personal favorites in the James Bond series. B. J. Worth and Jake Lombard really have my respect for risking their lives on that one. Also the HALO jump sequence in Tomorrow Never Dies is another favorite since I had not seen a HALO jump on film before. Like many of the parachute stunts in the series, they had to make multiple jumps just for about for a two minute scene.

@@calvindyson I always liked the water skiing scene from Licence To Kill myself. Especially since its behind a seaplane about to take off, and from what I know about aircraft they can get up to speed quite bit faster than a car or boat can. I also enjoyed the "fishing for Sanchez's plane" with the Coast Guard helicopter and the winch in the teaser sequence and the climax with the tanker trucks. The truck sequence especially ran into quite a few issues according to the making of on the DVD/ Blu Ray. The fact that it was filmed on a remote highway section that the Mexican government had closed due to many fatal vehicle accidents especially stands out as one of them.

Seeing TSWLM in the cinema in July 1977, that stunt caused a collective intake of breath. You should have heard a pin drop, and what makes it so special is that it’s all in one take, no cutaways due to the fact that only one camera was working by the time the stunt was performed. If there had been cutaways to other camera angles I don’t think it would have had the same impact. So glad I got to see it in the cinema, truly awesome! Always loved the LTK waterski stunt, and while I appreciate the Moonraker stunt the actual pre-title sequence is pretty bad . . . 😳 cue the hate!

Well, that was a very fun list! A predicable number one, but it's absolutely the best of the bunch. The moment that parachute opens and one of the skis nearly touches it is just breathtakingly daring: it could have gone wrong so easily! I had expected the GE jump to be higher, given your love for that film. A quick shout-out to the train fight in SF, because the fact that that's actually Daniel Craig putting himself in danger while the insurance team didn't want him to put it on the list for me. And I'm truly sorry for the Eiffel Tower jump in AVTAK, but that suddenly appearing diving board when the stuntman leaps always takes me out of it.

A very well put-together list, though I am a little disappointed that you didn’t embrace the theme of the vid and film your closeups whilst falling from a plane. I myself would’ve include more of the skiing stunts - Willy Bognor and his team do some incredible stuff, and make it look so effortless! I once tried to spin around and ski backwards - I got 90 degrees and fell over. It’s a shame we haven’t had any good ski chases since TWINE. Another thing I would also note myself is the Land Rover chase at the beginning of ‘The Living Daylights’, for the notable reason that, for a lot of it, it’s really Timothy Dalton on top of it! That’s dedication to the role, and he performs it well considering his training was at the RSC - don’t think he had much call to cling onto a car in ‘Measure for Measure’, but I could be wrong.

There are a couple of others that I really like - but are both somewhat undermined by 'infamous' presentation. 1) The sequence in the AVTAK pre-titles,when Bond surfs over the small lake and the two Russian skiers come a cropper. A lovely stunt;but people tend to only remember the musical accompaniment. 2) The 'rope falling' sequence in QoS. Wonderful stunt performing;somewhat spoiled by the hard-to-follow nature of the editing (which also bedevils much of the movie, imo)

The ski jump had to be #1, its so perfectly done, luck and a daredevil stuntman, thats all you need. You can see how close they came to catastrophe filming it. You can see one ski get catapulted sideways by the unfolding unionjack. If stuntman sylvester would have pulled the line later, by just a second, the ski would end up inside the unfolding and well...better not think about that. also the jump on the eifel tower is a cool stunt. "Fun" fact. They guy who invented the wingsuit (1890s i think) wanted to show how it works, by jumping the tower...well there was even one of the earliest videos ever made.....but his suit never worked and you can see him crash into the ground full speed

15:22 This was on one of the Bond documentaries that the falling ski nearly hit the chute and if it had torn it things would have gone wrong very quickly. Amazing. Oddly I think Tom Cruise is one of the few actors attempting proper non-CGI stunts but with things like the recent HALO jump they enhance it so much with CGI lightning etc. it looks fake. Much better to let the stunt speak for itself, classic Bond.

I didn't care that the movie was trying to ride the Star Wars cinema wave. In fact, I loved this aspect. But that Spy Who Loved me Parachute stunt should be one of the most glorious stunts ever put to film. How about a Top 10 choreography fight scenes? :D Anyway, didn't they have someone actually jump with the bike after the plane at the opening of GoldenEye for the wide shot? This Video was so amazing Calvin, I have to say my personal favourite is the LTK water ski just for the pure badassery and coolness of it, sad to find out that Dalton didn't do it though

Ooh, interesting idea Calvin, and yeah please make a vehicle version of this too. I'm not sure I agree with your number one choice, I'd probably swap it for number 2, but your points for both and the rest of the video are great as always. Also that Max Zorin edit was so funny XD

Always loved the skiing down the bobsleigh run from FYEO. Tragically though, apparently a stunt man actually died during filming of one of the ski scenes in that film.

Fully agree with your top two choices. The ski jump from TSWLM was gob-smacking, and could only have been improved by adding a slide whistle! Before you kill me, let me add one honourable mention: the ski sequence in OHMSS, especially when Bond skis on one leg.

I've always been properly properly obsessed with the noise May Day makes as she makes the plunge! 😂 I'm so happy you mentioned it. As for me, my alltime favourite stunt has got to be the ski jump from The Spy Who Loved Me. Absolutely outstanding. One of the best things ever put on film. (Haven't got there yet, but praying you share my sentiments and it ends up at #1. 😊

The outtakes from the crocodile scene are brilliant, thats was SO dangerous! He nearly got caught, one almost got full hold of his foot. Shame there wasn’t a neat way to include that in the final edit, it had so much more jeopardy than the cut used in the film.

This could go on and on because there are so, SO many. I’m so very glad you mentioned the LTK water ski to plane stunt which is not only astonishing, horribly underrated but brilliantly cut together and built up as the cap to the sequence. That’s why the crocodile farm and bus bridge stunt in LALD also work so well because they’re so well built up. Octopussy’s aerial climax is well done but I’d back up a bit to also include the amazing horse to plane transfer. The TLD cargo fight is the most developed aerial sequence. My only question is where would you have the FYEO Metora climb since we’re talking about vehicle less sequences.

It's fun to compare the train stunts in Octopussy (where it's painfully obvious that Moore didn't do any of it) to Michael Crichton's The Great Train Robbery where the writer/director was able to get Sean Connery to do much of the stunts on the train. The stunts ended up being way more dangerous than planned because the vintage train didn't have an accurate way to measure its speed. When Connery complained they were going too fast, Crichton kind of shamed him into "stop being a baby". It turned out when they checked the footage the train was going about double the speed they had planned. Oops. But it looked great because they didn't need to artificially speed up the footage.

Thanks for the video. This is a good list of (mostly) a type of big set-piece stunt that was a 1970s-1989s Bond staple. In addition to a companion stunt driving list I'd also enjoy a list of more personal-scale work -- fist fights, falling off things, being thrown off a balcony into a swimming pool, etc., even including work done by the actors. (Less impressive but interesting)

The AVTAK Eiffel Tower jump was indeed insane, and I liked hearing the background of that stunt. A key reason that the stuntman got blackballed from the Bond series, was that he came close to getting the entire Paris shoot shut down, as the authorities were not amused.

Also, the parachute jump in TSWLM was nearly missed by the cameras, as two of the three cameras used were unable to track the stuntman all the way. Fortunately, we got perhaps the best angle with the final camera.
