    Thank you very much for this great video. In my humble opinion I think Vladimir Yaschenko is the best high jumper of all time. He broke the world record with the straddle technique when the Fosbury flop was starting to become more and more popular. And he was a teenager. Had he tried the Fosbury flop, I'm sure he would have beaten Sotomayor's world record. Unfortunately he was injured and couldn't compete at the Moscow Olympics. I'm sure he would have won the gold medal. He still will be remembered as the king of straddel.

    Yashshenko had different physical skills. He was the world record holder utilizing the straddle technique at age 19 or 20; kinda hard to argue that should have become a flopper. I reject the notion that the flop is an inherently better technique. The flop and straddle are different. That is all that can be said.

    In Sweden there is a beef between Holm and Sjöberg. Holm is acting (for years) like a crybaby telling everyone he was a better jumper then Sjöberg. But Sjöberg just smiles and ask.. "how high did you jump and how high did I jump". Holm cries even more and making a fool of himself. But Holms son will be heard of much more in the future. He's 14 and have jumped 2.13.

    Very good video; I enjoyed watching it and learnt a lot. One thing to mention, though, Dick Fosbury I would put in the top 5 of this list because, as well as being the 1968 Olympic champion, and breaking the world record, he was also the most influential high jumper of all time. Even though the "flop" is named after him, and he admits he did not invent it, it was his performance of it that brought it to the mainstream. Without this influence, none of the subsequent performances would ever have been made.

    He set a new Olympic record but no World record. As for none of the subsequent performances, you can speculate all you like. The flop is not any more efficient than the straddle so it’s pretty hard to justify any claim that things would be different today if not for him. I started high jump because of Fosbury. Not just because of the technique but because of the man too. I coached for 15 years and would like to do it again. But he belongs in the honourable mentions category, rather than being one of the greats.

    Absent injury, Yashshenko would likely have added to his WR for multiple years and there might have been many more excellent straddle jumpers. The straddle calls for different physical skills than the flop. Today’s floppers are like flexible gymnasts. Yashshenko and Brumel demonstrate enormous power. I, for one, do not think the straddle is entirely dead.

    Does anybody have any good info on what these high jumpers' vertical leap is (in other words, if they didn't have to get their entire body over the bar, how high could they get their head above their standing height?) Top NBA jumpers are around 46 or 48 inches. Thanks for great video here, and the jumpers' form is so cool to watch.

  • @magichands135

    @magichands135

    4 жыл бұрын

    Had this discussion some time ago on a basketball video. Basically of you are 2meters and you clear the bar at 2.42m, you clear the bar with the center of your body supposedly being at 1meters. 2.42m minus 1m makes a ground clearance of 1m42 or about 55inches. But the center of gravity is not at the hight of the bar so that's actually not the hight you are clearing, its a little lower. Also depending on the length of your legs, the center of your body or the point that you clear the bar with might not be in the middle but a little higher. The measuring of the NBA reach does not account for the fact that jumping with one arm, makes you tilt the body and jump higher. All in all I think we must conclude that the max NBA running vertical is 46 inches (although the amount of steps is limited, so it could be higher) and that the max vertical of high jumpers should be over 50. There is footage though of And-one streetballers dunking on 12 foot rims, that should be a vertical way over 50inches. That's about all I've got for you.

    I think people in the cuban government didn't like Sotamayor and deliberately sabotaged his career.. Why would a country with such a great talent boycott two successive olympics when he was in the prime of his career? And there were other crazy things that they did to him such as confiscating a car he had won in a competition.

    Americans do not care if it is not also in feet and inches. 8 feet that is cool. Basketball ball hoop in 10 feet up. We can relate. 2.38 meters mean zero in the States. Seriously this gets no coverage in Summer Olympics yet they show guys running and running and running. This is drama. BTW And call it the 440 and 220 so we can compare over the years.

    Well, im very disappointed, not one single clip of my Universe high jump record, that's right, i beat them all. Get this, 10 feet, in one attempt, of course it was more of a fall than a jump, never went up, i went down, an unfortunately misstep, didnt see the hole, Im ok, thanks for ur concern. But still 10 feet huh? Lol. Love this discipline, it blows my mind how they can do this and going up...
