    In 2020, I think SAFP has to go ahead of Flo Jo now as a pure 100m runner. She IS just as fast (legit 10.65 - 10.70 range even with minimal to no wind based on their best performance) but has done it for a decade now with two Olympic golds, multiple world champs golds and now looking the favourite for the next olympics again. She's actually getting better and better as she ages, with the ability to produce her best at will now, just like Flo Jo did for that 1 year.

    I was a huge Ashford fan but if you follow her career she was injured too often and too long to be considered the greatest. Unfortunately, if she had managed to stay out of the hospital she probably would have won the 100 and 200 in Moscow in 1980 without the boycott. That was really her time. However, she spent most of her career recovering from injuries, and to me that means her training left a lot to be desired. Flo-Jo was not particularly big either (except for her upper thighs). Jeter looks like the Incredible Hulk next to her. From a running mechanics standpoint Flo Jo was probably the greatest sprinter in history, male or female. And her technique improved dramatically with her times from 1986-88. PEDs don't improve technique, just saying.

    Sudhakar Tamang Only because she was so good. Nothing but a known liar’s accusation and great performances borne out by phenomenal technique. She was tested and retested repeatedly years after she competed. She’s a huge suspect like Hillary Clinton runs a child trafficking ring out of a pizzeria. Nothing but conjecture. Bolt made the same improvements. FYI I have done PEDs. I would like to hear Flo Jo’s voice in 1985 and 1988. It’s very easy to tell. But her body doesn’t look particularly steroidal. Jeter and Johnson did. Johnson’s eyes were yellow in Seoul. Lol. I might add nobody else ran particularly fast when she set the WR also calling into question whether she was wind aided.

    Excellent list. Devers should be way higher. Achieving what she did, especially after her horrific fall at the final hurdle in the 100 metre hurdle race at Barcelona 1992, when she was clearly going to win that race; that must have felt devastating. Then she went on to win the 100 Metre flat. And defended it 4 years later. I also read since that she has long battled with Graves' Disease. True Champion.

    Good list. Obviously no Top 10 list will please everyone, but it's clear that you did your research. Personally, I would've left Marion Jones off altogether for obvious reasons. I would've had SAFP at #1 and Ashford higher (probably #2). Flo-Jo's 1988 season was the single best season for a female sprinter ever, but she didn't do much outside of it, so I'd drop her a few places.

  • @Tejaye777

    @Tejaye777

    8 жыл бұрын

    +AMM I agree with your first place.SAFP may not have been as dominant based on times and her victories probably wasn't as convincing as FLJO. The problem with FLJO, was although she won three titles in 1988 and destroyed the records in the 100m and 200m,She was really a one year wonder. SAFP is probably the most consistent big time performer winning a total of five Olympic and World titles in the 100m.FLJO by comparison has only won one title and considering she was also in the era of world Championships. SAFP reign of supremacy has lasted seven years so far and FLJO only one year.I think despite all the records,the margin of victories and titles SAFP still is above FLJO.

  • @EliteAthletics

    @EliteAthletics

    8 жыл бұрын

    PimpThe478 Agreed, although I would add that SAFP has had her share of dominating margins of victories too (.20 in Beijing 2008 and .22 in Moscow 2013). Not quite as big as Flo Jo's .29 in Seoul 1988 though!

    I would think when you deal with racing, the fastest of all time has to be considered the best of all time (unless they didn't manage ever to perform on the world's biggest stage). Flo-Jo is by far the greatest 100m runner of all time, especially if you know anything about running. Her technique in 1988 was staggering and second to nobody in history, male or female. Having followed Ashford her whole career, she was an injured mess more that 50% of the time. She was also the greatest 200m runner in her heyday and she rarely got to run it due to injury. I might include Rudolph or Stecher or Szewinska since they were from earlier eras, but if you are a contemporary or someone who came after and you are slower, you are by definition worse. (My argument why Djokovic is also greater than Federer despite the number of titles they each have, head to head and Djokovic's superior record against him in GS tournaments).

    I understand there is always a degree of subjectivity to any list but there are some noticeable absentees and misplacements. Firstly, how are Christine Aaron, Irina Privalova and Merlene Ottey ranked above Gail Devers? Devers won TWO Olympic titles, and a World title. I'm a massive fan of both ladies, and met Privalova in 2000, but there resumes are sorely lacking (especially Aaron's) in comparison to Devers. Ottey was never able to win a title and was always beaten by Devers in championships. You haven't listed Wyomia Tyus who was the first woman to win back to back Olympics, back when there was no world champs. She's easily top 10. And Fanny Blankers Koen certainly warrants a spot over Aaron, Privalova and Jeter Jeter is waaay too high. Yes she has a world title, but in terms of big race results she isn't top 10.

    +T & F archive This is all subjective and the guy when he evaluated the overall performances came up with this.I think he considered records,championships won,longevity,dominance etc.He came up with his own best 100m athlete from that.It isn't gospel truth and I personally don't agree with his first choice but it's the evaluation he made.I also agree with the fact that Aaron should not be placed above Devers but people see things differently I guess and judge facts differently and put more weight on certain things than others.

    Jlight Thanks for responding and defending the reputation of Griffiths-Joyner and the East German and Soviet athletes of that era. Evelyn Ashford would be more qualified to answer your question regarding drug use of track athletes. She was critical of Griffiths-Joyner in several interviews that you could resource. She was also witness to Griffiths-Joyner's transformation from a slim twenty five year old in 1984 to a twenty nine year old in 1988 that was at least fifteen pounds heavier. Sprinters lose speed during that age range. They don't improve their 200 meter times by seven tenths of a second.

    Wow... The *velocity* of *"Juliet Cuthbert"* from Jamaica Probably the most underrated female sprinter of all... *"Gwen Torrence"* of USA :Probably the most raw thoroughbred talent out on display... headback and just go... pure passion and heart in her running was the driving force. Consider if the technique of other female sprinters was fully employed by Ms Torrence? she would have been the one to rival the women's long standing world record! Honourable mention to Merlene Ottey, always wanted her to win Gold. An incredible athlete that always came up against a new great. Merlene's increased velocity down the home stretch - final part of the race, was her talent. *Merlene Ottey's* drive/"second wind" was quite beautiful to watch. unfortunate, after 3 Olympic finals never to get Gold... Still, The *G.W.A.O.A* i would also pick *Flo-JO...* In a field inwhich the probability of all the competitors using illegal substances, is high...? Great viewing such talented athletes... a big thank you
