Top 10 Apps For Motorcycle Travel (US) Travel Better
These are the apps I have been using this year to help make my motorcycle travel more enjoyable, safer and more interesting. Some route planning, some weather related, some entertainment and some more obscure apps as well. These have only been tested in the United States, I don't know how well they work outside of the US. Some of them have been working for me in Mexico as well.
Here is the list: (Watch to learn more and find out why)
1) Accuweather - (still my favorite)

I love Waze for letting me know about cops, road debris, potholes, construction, etc.

Waze is probably my favorite app. I use it for commuting, and have had it save me from cops, road closures, and even helped me avoid a mattress in the road.

Thank you for the vids man🙌on my first trip right now
Good stuff Tim, thanks. Also like the new channel name.
Great video. I like the new intro:-)
Great tips and apps Tim! Thanks for sharing!
Tim, all excellent apps. I’ll be adding touchnote to my collection. Re Amazon delivery. In addition to amazon specific lockers, you can also use post office “general delivery”. Small towns may not have locker options, but almost any US Post office will accept packages addressed to yourself and General delivery. Just walk in and show ID. Easy peezy. I’ve been doing this for many years in my travels, whether via motorbike, bicycle or through hikes.
Great idea making a video about these apps you use. Thanks!
Very informative, Thanks Tim!
Great suggestions. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the tips. It helps narrow down the options because there seems to be so many out there. There's a few here that wasn't aware of and will definitely be checking them out. Ride safe! Chris

Another great video Tim. Talk about needing a refund from a motel here's what I had happen once. Back in 1984 I was on a cross country trip and decided I was tired of camping and pulled into a motel in Springfield Mo. It looked nice up front, I paid with a travelers check, got the key, rode my Goldwing around back to the room and first thing I noticed was the door was partially open. It looked kinda run down inside and there was someone's clothes hanging in the closet. Back around front she wouldn't give me the check back so I just took off and ended up at the KOA which was a bad choice also, next to train tracks and the train sped by several times during the night literally shaking the ground.
Tim... Try Dark Sky and/or Weatherbug for weather. I use both and the details, especially the radar, are very good. You can put in points along your route and stay very aware of the the met you're going to be encountering. As an old sailor, this is second nature and has been very useful in the transition to terra firma. Awesome video. Keep them coming!
Thank you for your time.
Tim! Nice old fashioned Tuesday post! I’m in Saudi Arabia, it’s 3am and I have jet lag. It was nice to see your friendly face! John

Totally awesome tips/apps! I have to know the magic trick bro how did you get the sick phone on the screen seriously love that. I have been trying to figure out how to put up a map of a route etc say a section of the BDR we did in the video and so far it is over my head lol. Thanks for sharing your favorite apps!
Looking forward to checking out your list of apps.....
Great tips! Although I would have liked to have seen the Gulf in the background ;)
Great post. Most are available in Canada. Not the On x Offroad though. Travel safe!
Saw you used Audible. Wanted to suggest Overdrive app. All you need is a library card and you have access to all the audio and ebooks your library has (all the newest releases and you can request) and its all free with no ads and its only limited by the checkout limit that is set by your public library. I really enjoy your videos. Safe Travels!
Agree, Google Maps has served me flawlessly. If ever in ND, I have accommodations for you. Love life bud...

The most useful thing for me would be one to see an overlay of all public lands shown on Google Maps, and also on that overlay have essentially the Vehicle Use information, especially for areas where those V.U. maps show designated dispersed camping areas. I also wished some functions of Google's "My Maps" were integrated into Google Maps, which are basically much better methods for saving/noting spots and doing other things like highlighting areas you draw on the map, saving routes, etc. But yeah, the Public Lands overlay thing is so useful for me that I'd be happy just to find that alone on an app
The Titan missile silo is an extremely interesting tour especially for someone, like me, who grew up in the cold war. I don't know if it mentions it but you have to get your tour tickets at the Pima Air Museum. Another amazing place if you're interested in the history of aviation.
Hi Tim, thx for your tips and tricks. I hope that they also work in Europe. I'm going to try the Touchnote apart from Whatsapp.
Great info
Cheers Tim! I found wikicamps and usfs&blmcg (US forestry service & bureau land management camp grounds) pretty handy for campgrounds & state parks every night on big trips in the USA. To go with that, some folks might also love, but not have heard of, gpsKevin, who will post you great routes on an SD card for your specific gps system (ok that’s a website not an app), amazing routes with easy, moderate & gnarly options.
Great video as always! Let us know what app you use to make such great videos. Be safe buddy.
Hello Tim, very interesting which apps you use. How do you manage to charge your electronic devices after spending several days outdoors? Greetings from Michael from Germany!
+1 On Google Maps! But because I'm more of a Highway distance rider, I first use it on my laptop to research my route and get directions, but then I'll save those directions to my iPhone off-line. That way I can easily pull it up on my phone regardless of whether or not I have cell service. And you can have it give you voice prompts just like GPS does. So say once you get off a highway and you're going to a place in a city you're not entirely familiar with you can get turn by turn directions. Peace and love.
Can't believe What3Words doesn't make it on the list! I think it should be on every riders list. I've used it twice when calling the emergency services.
Thanks Tim now if I can just get my Card Pack Talk Bold to consistently talk to my Samsung phone. I just keep hearing connecting to phone one, disconnecting from phone one etc. etc. LOL
Windy...it is a sailing tool, but works overland, giving you current wind direction and speed. But the plus is 4 day forecast in realtime. Wind conditions in the West and Midwest can be as intimidating as rain or snow. Sometimes it is just better to sit it out for 24 hours or hit the road at 5am and ride through the calm of the day. Another is Myradar....again this is a pilots tool giving a moving view of storms through radar and surface winds that would affect a plane landing.
Google maps for the win. I use it as well to plan my routes. I just add a bunch of stops to my route the only downside is I have to go back and add all my mileage up from each stop to get an approximate mileage for my day or between fuel stops.
Nice
Tim... Can't find Pocket Atlas of the Obscure on the apple app store? Any suggestions? Different name? Keep up the good work! Love the videos!

Mike Grossman I can’t find it either. I tried searching Atlas Obscura, and Pocket Atlas as well, but without any luck. I’m in Canada, and sometimes apps aren’t available here.

One note about Google Maps: it lags behind Waze for road realignment/closures. I noticed this due to a major interchange near my apartment that is undergoing massive reconstruction. A new ramp from a state highway to the intersecting freeway was opened and Waze had it almost immediately while Google Maps didn't for months. Later, an intersecting road between the ramp and the freeway was reopened and, immediately after, the state highway was closed, detoured off that intersecting road. Waze had this within a day or two while Google Maps only did about 6 months later.
Great video! I like the idea of using Amazon locker. I have a road trip coming up and I'm sure I'll need to order something while on the road.
The Agoda app works good for me to find a room.
AirBNB is the goto for places to stay. Cheaper than a hotel, plus you get to meet hosts and have waaaaay more amenities.
Hi Tim and friends, since I pull a trailer with my dog behind my bike, I am interested to know any app that maps a route and calculates the travel time based on a certain maximum speed. If you know about any, please let me know. Thanks in advance, Leonardo
I think you got it right when your said "US travel." Because Google does OK for traveling through the US but not all of America. I am planning a trip from the US to the most southern tip of America in Argentina, and Google maps is OK if you want to stay on paved and even some well known unpaved roads, but I have found it extremely deficient in some parts of America, like the eastern part of Colombia.
I like to go on bicycle tours around Japan. I like to video my ride. I also want to plan routes. I want to record ACTUAL route taken. I wan to be able to use offline maps to cover me as I go. Currently I use RideWithGps to plan routes I use either RideWithGps or Relive to record the actual ride. And GoogleMaps for offline GPS and Navigation. I would really like to combine all this if possible. Is it even possible? What are best FREE or paying options. I don't use it all the time so subscriptions seem like a waste. Or is the current way I have it the best? PS I tried Komoot and Osmand, but address entry for Japanese addresses suck.
What headphones do you listed to audible on
In my opinion, this apps are allright but they're not astonishing, agree? There're many others that will help you, like GPS Tracks, BBR, Wikiloc, Roatrippers, Exit, and so on. You might not agree of course ! jajaja but I just wante to post something!!! hahaha. Like your videos very much!!
does anyone know a good app that maybe could act as an odometer/distance tracker that i could set an alarm or something to help me keep track of fuel while riding ?
waze for navigation, rbiker for tracking
Hi Tim great video. Check out the navigation app what3words
I hate google maps while it’s great for start to finish mapping if I have a route I want to take it’s always updating the route for the destination and not what I planned for it as stops.
Good ideas. A few apps I may try. Thanks #technmoto #support
Can't find #10 on my app store, apparently not on the apple app store.

The pocket atlas of the obscure does not work and has mostly bad reviews because of it

The best 10 apps are when the phone is away and out of sight - you do not need a smartphone distraction - in the time you look at the screen and back to the road you can die.
