Elizabeth Taylor's "George and Martha" monologue in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe" makes me cry. Her performance is so raw, so real; it's one of my favorite all-time performances as well.

Julie Andrews had some goodwill on her side, as the Mary Poppins role was her consolation prize after having been passed up for My Fair Lady - the role she originated on stage. The studio wanted a name, so Hepburn won the role. Hepburn wasn't even nominated though the film won several Oscars that year. Andrews said later, "My thanks to Mr. Jack L Warner, who made all this possible."

The studio did not trust Julie Andrews even though she won a tony for her the broadway performance. She did not have the name and they figured the public would not see this movie because of this. SO DUMB!!! That same public went to see Mary Poppins! The studios did a lot of that! I totally agree with everything you wrote!! Very Well Done❤

It's important to acknowledge that Julie Andrews made the remark about Jack Warner at the Golden Globes, but when she won the Oscar, she said that the only person she could thank was Walt Disney.

Julie Andrews’ performance in MARY POPPINS is one of my personal favorites but the fact that the film didn’t win best picture is shocking considering MY FAIR LADY wasn’t as prestigious as it looks. Katharine Hepburn in THE LION IN WINTER was a tour de force. I mean the claws and teeth were so sharp in that role that you know you’re gonna get a performance like no other. Barbra Streisand is simply GORGEOUS Gregory Peck was a nominee six times before winning and with actors winning after being nominated so many times are questionable but Peck’s win is rare because like you said his win after being nominated before six times was for the RIGHT performance and whenever I hear about TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD either the book or movie I think of him and that’s a good thing. Elizabeth Taylor in WAOVW is a performance that leaves you speechless. Her and Richard Burton’s relationship really did elevate their performances considering what we know now about how tempestuous their relationship was. And as a PSA: never do THE LION IN WINTER and WHOS AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLFE if your married in real life because you’ll be divorced so quick And I’m disappointed that you didn’t include Sophia Loren. I mean did you see her performance in TWO WOMEN? I highly recommend everyone to see TWO WOMEN because she gutted me with her performance and so deserved her historic Oscar win. Overall another wonderful video 😊

I love all your choices. My personal number 1 is Sophia Loren in "Two women". How much I cried and how much I still cry every time I watch that magnificent film by Vittorio De Sica.

Look at Steiger’s competition this year - Beatty for Bonnie and Clyde; Hoffman for The Graduate; Newman for Cool Hand Luke; Tracey for Guess who’s coming for dinner! What a race! Anyone of them winning would have been deserved. I have seen all these films and the acting was great. As for Poitier - I think he was fantastic in To Sir, with love - too bad the field was so stacked this year for Best Actor.

I would have loved Angela Lansbury winning for The Manchurian Candidate, who would be absolutely deserving to be in this top 10, but she lost to Patty Duke, who was also very deserving. Just one of these cases I can't be angry at the actual winner, but am somehow disappointed an equally deserving performance lost.

Interesting enough, the year Gregory Peck won the Best Actor Oscar for To Kill a Mockingbird was also the same year Peter O’Toole was nominated for Lawrence of Arabia (which was the big Oscar Winner with 7 wins including Best Picture). Two iconic and amazing performances that have stood the test of time. It’s fascinating to see these two actors compete in the same year with those roles, as I do think either one would have been very deserving of the win.

That was, I think, one of the great tragedies of awards timing. Lawrence of Arabia is one of my favorite films and O'Toole is transcendent in it. But Gregory Peck is, too!

Rita Moreno was under contract to MGM for at least a decade before West Side Story. She was in "Singing in the Rain" and "Summer and Smoke". She worked a lot but was limited to playing "exotics" for MGM.

I've been watching your videos while renovating a 100 year old section of my house and I cannot express fully how well done each one is. You thoroughly research and are clearly well-versed in film history. I am a film major who obsessed over early film (1903-1955) as a pre-teen. One of the early books I bought with babysitting money was about the history of the Oscars, which only went up to 1972 at that time. Watching your videos of those decades really hit home. Elizabeth Taylor was, by far, the stand-out in this era's category, though Patty Duke & Anne Bancroft's performances in The Miracle Worker are electrifying. I showed parts of it to my young students when we studied Helen Keller and I never ceased to be amazed at the authenticity they brought to each scene. I am a big fan of yours and hope you keep this up!

I totally agree with Elizabeth Taylor's performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (It's my second best film performance of all time for an actress to Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice)...but it will always pain me that Richard Burton didn't win for his role as George in that film...it was , in my opinion, much better, maybe not as flashy, as Paul Scofield's in his historical epic. The fact that both Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole never got their competitive Oscars, while richly deserving them, is a blot on Oscar history. Believe it or not, my favorite O'Toole performance was in the comedy My Favorite Year....which I still believe he was robbed for. Lol. It's hard to win for comedies, I guess.

Julie Andrews definitely deserved that spot! That scene where she is asked to explain and says, she never explains anything and that short poignant scene by the end before she leaves are my faves. Those kinds of performances don't really get nominated anymore. I mean they don't make those kinds of movies anymore. I also agree with Katharine Hepburn winning for GWCTD. She doesn't say much in the last scenes, but her emotions are so real it's almost intertwined with her character. I'm bawling not just because of the character but also it's the last time she's acting with her love. And her desolation scene in TLIW is just perfect. I mean she is not british does not talk british, but because its her, we accept a queen talks the way she does. She could do no wrong.

I agree. Katharine Hepburn knew how to achieve character, and was one herself off-screen too! Sometimes I feel we gravaite towards tools of a great performance without seeing the many nuances of what can constitute a great performance. Katharine Hepburn is a great example of that.

Wow. I was amazed the performances in The Miracle Worker were only honorable mentions. Glad to see them mentioned though. And glad you had Gregory Peck so high. He was amazing! One of the best wins in my opinion! Never been the biggest fan of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”. Maybe I need to rewatch it. It was a long time ago that I did. Rita Moreno's first movie role was in 1950; If I can trust IMDB, by 1961, when "West Side Story" was released, she had appeared in approx. 21 movies (including "Singin' In the Rain" & "The King & I") & numerous TV roles.

She was nearly 30 when making "West Side Story," but aside from "Singing in the Rain" & "the King & I," most of her work had been limited to forgettable characters as a result of Hollywood racism, so it's not surprising it came across as the breakout performance of a newcomer.

I love your Top 10 videos. This is a great list. I agree that Katharine Hepburn delivered incredible back-to-back performances, though I would edge The Lion in Winter forward - bitter, scheming, yet relatable. I believe Burton’s best is The Spy Who Came in from the Cold but haven’t seen Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou. I also enjoy Butterfield 8 - it’s trashy but also rebellious. That said I feel Shirley Maclaine was robbed for not winning for The Apartment. Truthfully, I would have put Rita Moreno as number 1 but would love to see what you do with an all-time list given Taylor is your #1 winner of this decade.

This is not a huge disappointment, but it would have been good to have seen Omar Sharif nominated for either "Lawrence of Arabia" or for his portrayal of the lead character in "Doctor Zhivago." Such remarkable acting. But every year, every decade we see so much outstanding performances. But great work, Sharif!!!

Totally agree that Elizabeth Taylor deserved the top spot for her performance as Martha, and also that Burton should have also won for his performance. I also loved Ruth Gordon in "Rosemary's Baby". She somehow manages to be funny and adorably cute, but also chilling and creepy at the same time as Mrs. Castavet. The only other performer I would have included who's not on your list would be Patricia Neal for her role in "Hud".

What about Shelley Winters second Oscar in 1966 for A Patch of Blue! She may have over a Ted a bit but that performance is amazing.

Im lucky enough to have seen EVERY Oscar winning performance (yes I’m kinda old lol and these go back to the VHS days). Overall your top 10 was good. Mine would be: 1. Maggie Smith. Arguably the finest Oscar winning performance in the lead actress category. A master class in every way by one of the greatest thespians ever to grace, film, stage and tv. 2. Paul Scofield. Copy and paste Maggie Smith just the male version lol. 3. Elizabeth Taylor. For all the reasons Brian said. In a performance you can watch over and over and I have. 4. Sandy Dennis. Greatest winning supporting turn of all time. Her performance captures nearly everything of the human experience in the running time of the film. Has to be seen to be believed. 5. Rod Steiger. Totally captured the true portrait of the south at the time, in one character, and the insidious scourge of racism. 6. Katharine Hepburn TLIW. Tour de force star turn, with all of Hepburns legendary charisma on display in spades. 7. Barbra Streisand. She’s Streisand. End of story. 8. Julie Christie. Her one two punch of Darling and Doctor Zhivago in two vastly different roles in 1965 showed her amazing range and talent. 9. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke. Brian cheated and I can too with a tie lol. You can’t separate these two. The chemistry between them is combustible. Their battle of wills, and the ensuing emotional fallout will leave you wishing the film was twice as long it’s that brilliant. 10. Lila Kedrova. One of the finest examples of an actress perfectly etching and detailing out a memorable character. Runners up: Gregory Peck Sophia Loren Shelley Winters Rita Moreno Peter Ustinov-Topkapi

I can’t believe you chose Julie Andrews over Barbra Streisand, Katherine Hepburn- and Bancroft in The Miracle Worker, Maggie Smith in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and Sophia Loren in Two Women. I mean Julie Andrews smiles beautifully, sings magnificently and delivers her lines with perfect comic timing, but come on. The role itself isn’t nearly as challenging as any of those women I listed.

Excellent list! I like Elizabeth Taylor's performance in BUtterfield-8 too. I know she hated. I know people think it's trashy, but you know, maybe this is classic Hollywood, but there is something about a film in which a star openly confronts the narrative around them for dramatic material, and gives a nuanced performance where perceptions change around them. I feel Elizabeth Taylor does that in BUtterfield-8. I also think an actor doesn't have to like the character nor performance for them to deliver an amazing one, which, Elizabeth does. She goes all raw for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and definitely earns her second Oscar, now that the reputation roadblock was confronted in the first. And, in a way, Katharine Hepburn does that in The Philadelphia Story (1940). She lost to Ginger Rogers, but the perception changed and she was able to have a relatively successful career at MGM because of it. I feel the sixties were Katharine Hepburn's decade. She was iconoclastic in the 1930s-1950s. But, in the four performances she delivered that decade, she clearly still had it, and finally had the industry's respect (though she always had her acting peers' respect). Her wins were deserved.

Ruth Gordon was hypnotizing as Minnie, "Rosemarys Baby" was the perfect horror film, so scary without being blood and guts, so effective manipulating the viewer into a sense of paranoia slowly engulfing Rosemary

For the top 1950s Vivien Leigh’s win should be #1.

I think Hepburn is superior in "The Lion in Winter." I can't get my head around her performance in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" being better than Maggie Smith or Paul Scofield. I also think they should remake "The Lion in Winter" with Daniel Day Lewis and Meryl Streep. Just a thought.

Barbra Streisand has the most beautiful voice ever! She is such a talented and beautiful actress. She should have won for "They Way We Were" too.

1000% agree with your Hepburn tie! I get how Guess Who’s win might not be the greatest win comparatively (I would’ve chosen Bancroft, but who cares what I would’ve chosen), but Lion in Winter’s win definitely is one of the greatest wins. I can never separate them just because Kate is so herself (at least her persona) in both films while being completely separate characters and it is just hard to not love either performance.

Some actresses, like Meryl Streep, embody whatever character they are playing, they sink into the character. Other actresses, like Katherine Hepburn or Jane Fonda, seem to play versions of their real selves as applied to a character. For example, Katherine Hepburn in life was very independent, opinionated, strong, Marched to her own drum, etc, and that’s what we see on the screen in most of her performances, comedy, or drama. similar (but not completely) to Jane Fonda. Jane as a person changed over time as did her characters. they’re still give great performances, and are awarded Oscars for them, but I don’t really see them acting as much as being slight modifications of themselves cast in parts perfect for who they are.

Do you think Katharine Hepburn deserved her Oscar for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? I think everyone else was better that year. We have Anne Bancroft for The Graduate, Faye Dunaway for Bonnie and Clyde and Edith Evans for The Whisperers and Catherine Denueve (who wasn't nominated) for Belle de Jour

that is a stellar list, but imagine GWCTD without her. I can't see anyone else playing that role. It is the heart of the entire film and she is perfection.

Rita Moreno made her first movie in 1950 and had been in about 20 films when she made West Side Story. So it wasn't "one of her first movies," and if it felt as if she'd been in movies a long time, it's because she had been.

Another great video - great choices, love that Ruth Gordon was included and agree Liz Taylor was just sensational in Virginia Woof..I too am a fan of Butterfield 8 - the general consensus when she won for that was that she'd been gravely ill at the time with Pneumonia and the Academy though ' better give her the Oscar, just in case' I believe she threw up first time she saw herself onscreen in it. Personally - I would have preferred Davis over Bancroft the year she won, I think Davis is incredible in Baby Jane - and goodness, it would've riled Crawford. Davis never forgave her for her campaign against her that Oscar season, then swanning onstage to 'accept' the award.

My list 1. Sophia Loren for Two Women one of the most underrated wins 2. Julie Andrews Mary Poppins not just anyone could play that role and make the movie a classic 3. Gregory Peck To Kill A Mockingbird. Perfect actor and character match 4. Sidney Poitier for Lillies in the Field Historic win , but also great performance 5. Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl show the full range of her talents 6. Anne Bancroft for The Miracle Worker . Holding her own and then some with a flashier performance from Duke and various forms of opposition 7. Rita Moreno West Side Story best part of the movie with an astonishing performance 8. Rod Steiger for The Heat of the Night playing both antagonist and ally to Poitier 9. Patricia Neal in Hud . I doubt the role would be so memorable without her playing it 10. Patty Duke for The Miracle Worker playing a tricky role to get just right. 11. Maggie Smith for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie just superb 12. Goldie Hawn for Cactus Flower. Dazzling 13. Melvyn Douglas for Hud moral center of the film 14. Gig Young They Shoot Horses Don’t They. Makes you understand the character’s role even if you don’t like it. 15. Peter Ustinov for Spartacus my favorite character in the movie.

Hey Brian, Another amazing video! I have to disagree with your choice of Julie Andrews that year. I believe Debbie Reynolds' performance was the stronger of that category! Another amazing revelation of Elizabeth Taylor is that she was 31 y/o at the time she played Martha. I believe her youth gave her the courage needed to deliver an astonishing performance! I saw Rex Harrison on stage as Henry Higgins I had heard when he played the role into the 1980s it became more difficult to find an actress to play his mother. The production I saw the actress playing Mrs. Higgins was older but not biologically old enough to be Henry Higgins mother. I believe he was in his 70s when I saw him in 1985.

A really enjoyable video, however just a correction: Sidney Poitier was Bahamian-American. The first Black actor to win Best Actor absolutely, but the first African-American actor to win was actually Denzel Washington for TRAINING DAY in 2002. It's a common misconception but also feel its important to broaden notions of ethnic diversity (and not suggesting you weren't).

I saw an interview with Taylor where she says they used prosthetics to make her chin/neck fatter and she wore a fat suit or fake stomach.

Gorgeous women who play against type often end up with an Oscar in hand. Elizabeth Taylor, Charlize Theron, Halle Berry. When their character is unattractive, physically or socially, and we know the person behind that performance is so unlike their character, it is lauded.

Respectfully, you're very wrong about Rita Moreno. She had a contract with MGM since she was a teenager. West Side Story wasn't until her early 30s. She had done over 20+ films in her career since she started and before West Side Story. She was doing it a very long time. Heck she was even, in Singin in the Rain as Zelda and King and I as Tuptim. Difference was that Rita Moreno was subjugated to nothing but mostly ethnic roles which is why she thought Singin in the Rain could've been her big break but it wasn't until West Side Story that she was given a role with dignity and saw her beyond the sensual other ethnic woman with tits. So yeah she started off as a dancer, and was doing films a minimum of 15 years over 20 projects before West Side. So it is very inaccurate to say this was early in her film career or she wasn't an experienced actor by that point. Only difference is Anita was the fist time her talent was let loose and she was able to show everything in a film without being robbed of dignity. This is why she is one the Academys greatest supporting performances. Let alone how this Academy Award win later on shaped her career to give her the opportunity to be one of only 3 and only Latina to win the Tripple Crown of Acting and the Elusive EGOT

I don’t care much for the original Westside Story because of all the brown face, even on the Puerto Rican actress, Rita Moreno. I’m glad she refused to bronze up for the Oscars. Latinos are different shades. That makes it a bitter watch/rewatch for me. Liz Taylor is incredible, that entire cast is too, in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe.

67 was a weak year- Hepburn's main competition was Bancroft and her part was more supporting... this was Hepburn's 2nd win- with 34 years since her first- that, Tracey's death and no great other performance in the field handed it deservingly to Kate... Lion was another level. Streisand was inducted into the Academy the year she was nominated- breaking the rules, she had only done 1 film and the rules say you have to be in 3 to be a member... Academy President Gregory Peck added her to bring more young talent into the Academy... you have to think she voted for herself- if not for that- it might not have been a tie. Reply

Sorry to be a pedant but Ms Moreno had performed in twenty or so films before WSS including Singin' In The Rain and The King And I - in small (and sometimes uncredited) roles, it's true, but it's far from accurate to call WSS one of her first films, her "overnight success" took many years! :)

I have always felt that Mary Poppins was a stronger character than Maria. Out of curiosity, have any other actors won an acting Oscar for playing a role in a Disney movie?

A very good list. HOWEVER, Gregory Peck should of been Number #1 in my opinion. 🤔
