Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor, Baron Thielemans (29 April 1922 - 22 August 2016), known professionally as Toots Thielemans, was a Belgian #jazz musician. He was mostly known for his #harmonica playing, as well as his guitar, whistling skills, and composing. According to jazz historian Ted Gioia, his most important contribution was in "championing the humble harmonica", which Thielemans made into a "legitimate voice in jazz". He eventually became the "preeminent" jazz harmonica player.
His first professional performances were with Benny Goodman's band when they toured Europe in 1949 and 1950. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1951, becoming a citizen in 1957. From 1953 to 1959 he played with George Shearing, and then led his own groups on tours in the U.S. and Europe. In 1961 he recorded and performed live one of his own compositions, "Bluesette", which featured him playing guitar and whistling. In the 1970s and 1980s, he continued touring and recording, appearing with musicians such as Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Werner, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Mina Mazzini, Elis Regina, Quincy Jones, George Shearing, Natalie Cole, Billy Joel, Paul Simon and Paquito D'Rivera.
Among the film soundtracks that Thielemans recorded are The Pawnbroker (1964), Midnight Cowboy (1969), The Getaway (1972), Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Sugarland Express (1974) and Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977). His harmonica theme song for the popular Sesame Street TV show was heard for 40 years. He often performed and recorded with Quincy Jones, who once called him "one of the greatest musicians of our time." In 2009 he was designated a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honor for a jazz musician in the United States.

Never too old. I was at his show in Rutherford NJ and had a privilege to talk to Master. I was 49, he was 80. I felt like I'm 99. So much positive energy and joy of life he was. These magic tones, notes can only be brought to life by someone with great talent and young soul. Only by Toots. Forever young...
Today's Google homage led me to Toots and this concert. What an amazing talent, what an incredible intuitive brain. Jeez, he learned to play guitar by listening to Django's records. And he was an anatomical wonder, who could create lyrical, complex, soulful music with his mouth and breath into the tenth decade of his life.

So glad I got to do sound for him back in the 90’s. It was amazing. I pulled up the fader and it sounded awesome, didn’t have to do anything. Plus one of the nicest people I ever met.
Good heavens, what a great concert this was... His age, his condition, and still hitting the most sensitive notes like never before. Surrounded by great musicians

I already knew Toots in a video playing together with bassist Jaco Pastorius, but I didn't know that he was a great icon in this instrument and was surrounded with extraordinary musicians like this band that accompanies him. My Brazil always received him well, even though he was playing for Elis Regina. Greetings noble friends of Jazz! Sit on the couch, put on headphones and enjoy this presentation that should not be missing from your collection! It is worth it!

I latched on to Toots the first time I heard him. Maybe 1975... fell in love with the sound. Toots is the spice on a huge number of diverse recordings. What a special treasure of invaluable sounds he created. What a vibe. I’ve always looked for a companion who felt the same....

I first heard Toots playing guitar with George Shearing in 1955. I thought then, he was the most unique guitarist I'd heard. He didn't play the same things other guitarists played. Later I heard him playing harmonica and that same uniqueness was there and was there his whole life.

Today (20-07-21) was my first discovery of Toots and his harmonica's music through KZread. But it was never too late to get to hearing/appreciating a legend played the most beautiful popular songs through his harmonica in collaboration with three other great musicians. Toots will be missed by his fellow musicians & fans around the world.

I srill smile when he plays certain things that sound so different and yet great, on an instrument that few have ventured into Jazz with.
Such a magnificent jazz musician and playing the harmonica. A singular path indeed and who can top this? A sad day for all of us when his day of wine and roses came to an end.

Os conheci hoje, mas já estão entre meus favoritos. Nunca cheguei a pensar em jazz com Gaita, mas essa galera me surpreendeu!!! Não bastasse pelas melodias maravilhosas, os músicos tocam em um humor e um entusiasmo que é um verdadeiro deleite de assistir!!! Acenda a fogueira, coloque um drinque com gelo num copo raso e aconchegue-se em sua poltrona, pois isso é algo que não aparece todo dia!!!

@@user-xv1lh5id6q ハーモニカ演奏されるのですか？良いですね。 20代の頃と30年後の2回、彼の来日コンサートに行きました。 2回とも演奏の素晴らしさはもちろんですが飾らずウイットに富んだ暖かいお人柄に感銘を受けました。 2回目は嬉しい涙と、もしかしたらこれが最後なのではと感じて寂しい涙がない混ぜになって複雑な想いで聴きました。コンサート終了後、CDにサインして頂く時思い切って声を掛けたのですがお疲れのようでお耳に入らなかったご様子だったのが残念です。

@@user-ie4dl5wf9z 彼の名前は知らなくても、カーボーイやセサミのおかげで音は皆聴いていたと思います。私もでした。エバンスとの協演版が私の初LPでしたから、既に中期〜でしたね。すぐにホナークロメッタ14を買いました。彼が何を吹いてるかなんて判りませんでした？ジャケットに絵が描いてあったのは今思い出しました！それにしても２度も直聴視とはいいですね。私40数年レコ、ＣＤ、Ｕtuだけす。

@@user-xv1lh5id6q 本当に自分の人生の中で無形の財産になったと思います。2度目はすみだトリフォニーホールで、木の香りがするような感じの良いホールでした。2011年の秋だった記憶があります。その時何で演奏されていたのかは残念ながらわかりません。 ホナーメロートーン、、、少し興味が湧いてきました。 ありがとうございます。

Unbelievable. Born 1922 Brussels Belgium. He's 90 years old at yhis concert. Undoubtably the best jazz harmonica player. First knew of him from the film Midnight Cowboy, he blew the haunying theme song.

I didn't know nothing about him but when I saw the movie Sugarland Express I knew that was the same cat that blew Midnight Cowboy song! Then came Quincy Jones. Toots The Best.
I was fascinated by the song KZread recommended to me in 2021. It's very comfortable music.

Everything here is gorgeous but beginning at 28:90 just special, for Sinatra fans, Italian Americans of a certain age, etc., etc. Thank you SO MUCH for posting. Toots was a genius.
