Did you have to go to the food drives, just to have food in the home? Did you get a chance to go to school? Did they sexually assault you? Stop throwing your folks under the bus because you were either blind or didn't want to listen to what they had to offer.

    For folks in our age bracket back then the struggle wasn't as real as today. Sure many had it hard but back then you could do some college and get a solid job. Nowadays >50% of college grads are unemployed or underemployed. Maybe Toonami folks understand whats good. Much love to everybody watchin this and continuing to strive.

    Naman Misra but it was a lot harder education wise because there weren’t iPhones at the time. But I get you though it was a lot easier for colleges financially back then compared to now. Tom was speaking to those that didn’t make it plus some of us watch toonami around second grade and 4th grade that didn’t get to see college by 2010-2014. But yea it’s hella easier for the people that watch it when they were in their teenage years

    "A person grows up when he is forced to overcome hardships" So very true....everyone should remember that. No matter how bad things get, all your pain will make you stronger in the end. Those who have it easy grow up weak and inept. My strife forced me to reach the top in my field, and though no one will ever know it, I know it, and that's all that matters.

    "It's as true today as it was when you were 12." Once again just as when I was a kid, Tom and Toonami has pulled me out of myself to step back and take a look, reminding me to never give up. Man, I truly needed to hear this after so many years of doubting myself and feeling as if though I've failed on my dreams, given up on them. Recently I've woken up to the reality of how much of a wreck my family' is and I feel powerless to fix it or to help my friends when I really need to--how. How the fuck does Toonami imbue me with that ageless fire to strive and overcome obstacles, how does it do that me? How can a cartoon show still after all these years touch upon that child-like belief like Son Goku, that I can overcome anything no matter what, with determination and strength of will, no excuses? Cause Toonami isn't just a cartoon show. It's a wave, a life force, a force of nature. it was and always has been a revolution. It's a generation's and hopefully this one's and the next's way of life.

He pulled this up for me to watch shortly before it aired, remembering all the afternoons we’d spent together watching Toonami growing up. We both teared up watching this, him because he had finally realized his dreams of being an animator and me...well because I was (and still am) trying to figure out what exactly my dreams were.

    Where to start? This speech here...It's the fusion of my two favorite Toonami speeches of all time: Broken Promise/Dream from the original run and Life Advice from the revival. It's what I consider to be actual realism, namely acknowledging both the good and the bad, instead of pessimism claiming to be realism. It quotes one of my favorite lines from not only the original Dreams speech, but from my favorite TV show of all time, which Toonami itself introduced me to: Outlaw Star. TOM's delivery is genuine and heartfelt. The clips used only add to the impact of the message. As for the message itself, it is actual good, practical advice worded in an easy to understand manner, something Toonami has always excelled at. I could go on and on about what makes this video work so well, but I fear if I were to do so, it would start sounding less like honest praise or more like empty flattery. Not only that, but I have a feeling there are plenty of others who can put those reasons into words better than I can. Truth be told, I hope to be a teacher one day myself, one who can impart this sort of wisdom to other people in a manner that would do TOM proud, just as it was given to me throughout my childhood and continues to be to this day. Then again, considering not only the quality of this speech, but the fact that TOM isn't the only magnificent teacher Steven Blum has voiced, this may be a tough act to follow.

    The thing is, anytime you're trying to be a "realist" people will cynically dismiss you as just only taking the negative, even if you ARE actively taking into account the good and the bad. It's pretty damn annoying.

  • @LinkSeasonMaster

    @LinkSeasonMaster

    I think a major part of the problem is that the people I've run into weren't very good at clearly mentioning the positive, even if they were taking them into account. They'd usually just start off with multiple bad things before getting to a few good things, or they wouldn't make it very clear when they were discussing the positive. What I love about TOM's speech here is that he makes VERY clear when he's discussing each.

    I just rewatched the original dreams video and saw this one in the related videos. I remember watching the original on TV and feeling...special? I was just a kid then, all I wanted to do was play, but I remember watching it and feeling something after. through out the years I've rewatched it to help me stay motivated with school. now I'm 24, and I'm leaving home for the first time to become a travel nurse. I start my assignment Monday and naturally I have some jitters about it, so I decided to look up the original again. I have to say, I've never related to the original video as much as I feel I do now and after watching this 2016 version I feel like it's an even better fit for my situation. I may not be 12 anymore, but I'm still dreaming. take care of business, and don't fear failure.

    I needed this, I am going through very hard times, because I am struggling to keep my house. Also my dreams are dying because of reality, I am just falling apart. Then I saw this video and now I am not giving up hope. Thank you so much TOM, for giving me hope of my dreams coming true💙💙💙💙💙

    This video...It really moved me to tears. I won't even lie. Especially when I was recently told I might be too old to start towards drawing. 27 going on to 28 now. I felt that way too honestly, but I wanted to prove that false too. A friend sent me this video...And I cannot thank him or T.O.M enough for these words. I hope that my ability to draw becomes worth mentioning one day. So I can repay him for keeping my spirits high.

    Graduated college in 2012. Got a job in my career field as a Juvenile Probation Officer. Quit a few years later because I wasn’t happy. Studied on my own to become a personal trainer. Lost my job because the gym got bought out by a giant corporate gym. Went to community college to become a Physical Therapist Assistant in 2018. Had a heart attack in 2020. Now in 2024, I’m a PTA and learned to play hockey for the first time at 33 years old and I’ve never been happier Never give up on your dreams people. I accomplished mine, and I hope you will too.

    My Dreams of being as good at all forms of art as my older brother may be completely out of my reach now and forever more but only for as long as I refuse to change myself to fit that dream. As soon as I really finish something it will be again within reach and I won't lose sight of that. I won't lose sight of reality either though. Hopefully soon I'll have manifested them both as long as I don't give up. Thanks Tom.

    I grew up on Toonami and I remember watching Dreams when it first came out and I believed him. I still believe him and I accomplished everything I set out to do and I know Toonami gave me confidence as a child to dream and not be scared of failure that my mom couldn’t. Y’all the truth for these clips and y’all the truth for not forgetting about the ones that grew up on you

    To think JUST when I was starting to doubt myself THIS just had to play. My childhood dream is to write incredible stories and create amazing characters like the ones I loved as a kid and do today; Luffy, Ichigo, Naruto, Natsu, and hope that someday it might inspire someone else to do the same. To be a writer is ny dream
