I enjoyed the elaboration on this. Certainly a disgusting metaphor.😂 I appreciate Maynard’s grotesquely twisted sense of humor, making this one of my favorite Tool tracks. And yes, such a great drop! 🤘🏼

What’s up Elijah! Yeah Maynard has a way of describing experience through his twisted dark sense of humor and I love it. Mrs E maybe not so much on this track lol. That intro has to be one of the heavy drops of all Time in general let alone just Tool 🔥 this is definitely a track you turn on full blast in the car and just wait for it come dropping in. Thank you so much for the support it really helps us out and the best part is it was with Tool! We truly appreciate man🤘

Those symbol crashes and drops are so powerful. Also, Adam’s playing is like a rollercoaster how it goes up and down. Most of Tool’s songs give you that sense of motion and thus, it’s an experience not just notes played. Good stuff guys and beautifully analyzed. 👍 Oh, by the way the best drop is half way into Jambi, the live version. It’s just sooo nasty.

The title refers to a sexual act. In the chorus, you will notice that he says at first, "Finger deep within the borderline," then on the second, "Knuckle deep inside the borderline," and on the third, "Elbow deep inside the borderline... Shoulder deep within the borderline." Clearly, he's talking about putting his arm in something. He may be using this act of constant sexuality as a metaphor - possibly looking at how people will find something they like and then do it over and over again and eventually go on farther and farther until they can't turn back. Depending on your perspective of this song, it may or may not have sexual meaning. The song deals with how modern technology tends to desensitize people and keeps them from really feeling. Vicarious also hints how death has become so everyday occurring it no longer turns us from it, but rather we feed off it. In modern life everyone has their faces in their phones not truly connecting with others, causing us to lose touch. Maynard metaphorically ramps it up to fisting trying to show how bad it will get if we don't make the change. Lyrics below: Something has to change Undeniable dilemma Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear Constant over stimulation numbs me But I would not want you any other way Just not enough, I need more Nothing seems to satisfy I said, I don't want it, I just need it To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive Finger deep within the borderline Show me that you love me and that we belong together Relax, turn around and take my hand I can help you change Tired moments into pleasure Say the word and we'll be Well upon our way, blend and balance Pain and comfort, deep within you Till you will not want me any other way But it's not enough, I need more Nothing seems to satisfy I said, I don't want it, I just need it To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive Knuckle deep inside the borderline This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to Relax, slip away Something kinda sad about The way that things have come to be Desensitized to everything What became of subtlety? How can this mean anything to me If I really don't feel anything at all? Yeah I'll keep digging Till I feel something Elbow deep inside the borderline Show me that you love me and that we belong together Shoulder deep within the borderline Relax, turn around and take my hand

i agree with you, this is truly one of THE great songs. the drop after the intro IS one of the heaviest riffs and guitar sounds ever put to tape (equal with Killing in the Name imho), and you DO want to just stay in there forever. the first time eye ever took ecstasy,, that same section after the first chorus seemed to last about an hour, and the moment remains a highlight of this life. spiral out.

A RUSH Song also talks about going to Extremes and you would love to react to the RUSH song if you haven't yet - it's called "Between Sun and Moon" by RUSH - and Neil of RUSH wrote the lyrics with Pye Dubois - and they also both wrote "Tom Sawyer" Lyrics by RUSH together -(Danny of TOOL mentioned RUSH and Neil when they got a music award) --- "Between Sun and Moon" (Counterparts) - is about going to extremes and why people do that instead of staying in a healthier balanced "Middle Ground" - "Between Sun and Moon" is a great RUSH song to react to

I was obsessed with this song for the longest time. I used to think this was their greatest song ever! Tool taught me different when they put out other stuff that blue me away, they have no limits to how great they can be. 2000 years from now, people in the future will listen to this and think, "Oh they were really advanced in the past, and they had incredible knowledge of music theory!", completely ignoring the fucked up shit that we had to put up with and that Tool actually sang about. That's life I guess.
