The Salival live version also gives you some good insight into how Maynard intimately connects with the audience. I’ve read that the song is a conversation between Maynard’s egoic self and true self.

@@RallyBud That's really interesting, thanks for that. I have never bought the DV explanation, since for myself who as been at the recieving end it would appear in the song MJK is speaking as the abuser. His lyrics been the classic things the abuser would say, not the victim. Been a Tool fanatic for 30 years, so thanks for opening my eyes to a better explanation of one of my all time fav tool tracks. 💜

When you asked what Danny is hitting early in the track? That’s just the snare drum with the snares released + a bit of a ::crack:: of an intentional contact w/ the rim….not *exactly* a rimshot, but close enough and with the snares released has a “punchy, boxy” sound…if that’s what you were talking about?

He's hitting a snare drum wit the wires off (wires run along the bottom of the snare drum which gives more "crack" in the sound, but you can un clamp it and have it sound ...like this)

Fun fact: Maynard doesn't write the lyrics until the song is tracked. He let's the song interpret the words. Sometimes he'll finish it, then the band let's him know that they made some changes. He rewrites it because the song changed its meaning.

Yes! I think it progresses with the "pushing and shoving" to the point where he is "in the gap" he even says "You put me somewhere I don't want to be. I see things I don't want to see" which is him being pushed to his emotional and mental breaking point where he fears he may say things he will regret or even possibly become violent.

Something Adam said about his style that I have notice since listening to Tool, he thinks of playing the guitar the same way a great film would unfold, he really creates a landscape. I have yet to hear guitarist that does it like him. Adam also has an awesome back ground in makeup/special effects for the movies working with the likes of Stan Winston.

I hope you actually read through your comments. I just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed watching your Tool journey! I've been a huge fan for 25+ years, I've seen them live over 20 times, and although I love a lot of bands I've never connected more to any music than I have with Tool. I've loved your honest reactions listening to these songs and it's really cool seeing how you interpret some of them, even after thousands of listens you've actually pointed out things I've never even considered. You mentioned in one of your first Tool reactions how you "see" music through colors. The way you explained it describes to the T exactly how I've always heard (seen) music. Just really awesome how we come from completely different musical backgrounds but there are still so many similarities. Keep listening to Tool, it gets even better (if you can believe that) and do whatever you can to go see them live. Trust me, it'll change your life. No other experience like it. Keeping rocking brother!

The song is about patterns of self abuse, involving Carl Jung theory of child archetypes. The first two verses describe child and the gap (self-indulgent pitiful hole). Rest your trigger on my finger Bang my head upon the fault line. The child archetype being triggered, leading to self blaming.

it’s the shadow talking; the dark parts. tool truly helped me recognize that having those ‘parts’ aren’t necessarily bad; you just have to find balance and be centered. when i was younger and hearing tool, i would assign the lyrics to another person. now i only hear Maynard talking to his shadow and to his inner, unhealed child. it became so much more poignant and meaningful to me. i love that the lyrics and the band in general leave the lyrics open to interpretation, and they never included lyrics. i feel like he is saying these dark things called to him and he is saying ‘i can’t go down in this again, cuz if so, we both aren’t coming back’

I believe it’s about losing your sense of self in a relationship. “Take care not to make me enter. If I do we both may disappear.” “If I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay.” Your partner projecting what they want you to be instead of what you are.
