Parabol -> Parabola having similar lyrics but such different energies behind them was amazing to me the first time I heard and still is of course. It spoke to me about the dynamic nature of emotions, and the power of music and energy to transform or bring out a different perspective on the same subject matter. Especially cause I feel like language can only scratch the surface of the human experience, so to me it's kinda like using instrumentals to show two sides of the same coin. Anyway lol getting too deep aye 🤣 Also Disposition is my favourite and I'm glad you think it's beautiful too!!

TOOL Army: Assemble! There's a major 5 vibe on this album (some songs are in 6 and 7 and other bits and bobs but 5/4 and 5/8 are the most common time signatures on this album. Heard this when it came out. Blew my mind. Saw them twice that year and then caught them on the 10,000 days tour. My god they're incredible. I never get bored or complacent when listening to Tool. They always impress and melt your face. Was waiting for you to get to Ticks and Leeches given how much you love the drums 😂 pound for pound, Danny Carey is the greatest Rock/Metal drummer; so musical and yet a virtuoso. Adam Jones never overplays, he writes just enough to serve the song and that's it. Superb. A quick note for your mic audio, add a low cut to remove all the baning as you hit the table...

Love that you have House of Leaves on your shelf. Have you listened to Mark Danielewski's sister, Poe's album "Haunted"? About half the songs reference Mark's book and "Hey Pretty" actually has him reading from the book in the song. Rest of the songs are about her dealing with her father's passing and are cut with recordings of their father speaking.

it's too bad you skipped Ænima because it's so rocking and this album added so much and took it to another level. It was really amazing back in the day when this album came out and we had all been used to Undertow and Ænima and we were all absolutely blown AWAY. I saw them many times on the Lateralus tour and one time I went by myself in Austin and when Maynard kept chanting "I must keep reminding myself of this" I just started weeping. It was odd but it was also really cool to see them alone and without worry.

Ticks and Leeches has eventually become one of my favorite Tool songs. I always loved the lyrics and the drums as it seems you did but the context adds so much to it. The song is pretty much written about and to an executive at the record label who said that they’re new album wasn’t sounding hard enough. Maynard responded with hard and screaming but threw threw the come-down in there as the ultimate middle finger

Ticks and Leaches was incorporated at the request of the record label as they felt another heavy track was required to ensure Tool’s core fanbase was satisfied. It can be deemed to be slightly out of place on the album but with its quieter interlude I think it still fits beautifully, although as I age, I wonder what the album would have been had the band had full control.

Lateralus is in my top 4 albums of all time, and the T&L track placement is the only one sticking point I've ever had with it. I've found that I prefer it directly after the grudge, both sonically (the drum energy at the end of the grudge to the drum energy at start of T&L), and conceptually (T&L *is* the grudge that the band is letting go off, through the song itself). Then Eon Blue Apoc is the calming aftermath before proceeding to the rest of the album in the order the band originally envisioned without T&L.

I remember the first time I heard that track...in 2002, in my freshman dorm room at night. It scared the crap out of me. But not _as much_ as the final moments on Undertow....with that monologue going on about how "now red was your color....and those little people were yours too...etc." Gave me total alien abduction vibes and the first time I heard that, when I must have been 16....I remember feeling genuinely disturbed and afraid to be alone. It's a lovely memory now....to realize mere music, mere sounds, can DO that to you...make you feel such emotions.

Watching you experience "Faaip De Oiad" for the first time, added with your following a transcription of what was actually spoken during the track, and I realized its effect on me was not quite as acute as it used to be. But not by a lot. The feverish anticipation leading up to the May 2001 release of 'Lateralus' almost defied comparison. I bought it the day it came out - and between the wealth of fan praise shared here already, and the true joy & amazement you experienced listening to 'Lateralus' and falling in love with the music (which I'm certain many of us vicariously experienced through you, a beautiful side effect of *reaction videos* ), everyone has said it best already. Twenty-two years later and I still stop the CD after the conclusion of "Triad". Not because of a negative reaction to "Faaip De Oiad" (IE not hate, nor thinking it's filler, nor that it hasn't purpose) but because that final track so disturbed and unsettled me the first time I heard it that ONE time was absolutely enough. That cacophonous sound Tool put to this real phone call into the Art Bell radio show, the voice on the line genuinely terrified and near mental collapse, then the line went dead, the caller never identified nor heard from again - "Faaip De Oiad" so viscerally fucked me up my first listen that I'm all good with the album ending after "Triad" and turning it off. Without feeling I'm cheating myself of something, I'm OK with that. Welcome to the Tool Army and spiral out Kira...

The last track is a recording from The Art Bell talk radio show. It’s a real conversation that happened between a caller and Art Bell. The call got “cut off” mysteriously just like the caller said it would. If you look it up you can find it. It’s really kinda creepy given the context

I adore Tool....their music makes me think and feel and introspect and feel inspired and all that good stuff. But I think the one song that legit can make me cry.....is Disposition. Something about it feels very holy and exalted. I always picture vast deserts at night...and the DEEP timescales of my life, humanity, the earth itself, the universe...how vast it all is, how deeply incomprehensible yet poignantly achingly gorgeous and precious. Something about the entire vibe of Disposition makes me want to cry...with gratitude that existence is even a thing in the first place. But also....what IS it?

6:51 At first I thought that was tremolo (which he probably just used the volume knob for), because the video's a bit quiet for me to tell, but that might actually be a voice box like Peter Frampton used on stuff like "Show me the way", a Wah-Wah peddle (Yep, literally what we guitarists call it) is on stuff like "White room" by Cream, though there is a misconception. Trem is volume and vibrato is tone. BUT, when Leo Fender designed the Strat, he called the bridge a " Tremolo bridge" and therefor, every other numpty that didn't study music engineering/production does too.

This absolute masterpiece dropped when I was 15. I'm 37 now and still haven't heard an album to top it. IMO the only band that even gets close to Tool is Opeth.

I felt joy and was pleased to see your experience. A genuine treat to watch and I appreciate your perspective on the album. Each album hits different. I'll look forward to each one in due time. I'd love to watch you listen to a band called 'Ne Obliviscaris'. They're from Melbourne and they attract similar listeners as TOOL because the music is so layered and full of detail. They're the sort of band that gives you goosebumps, even after multiple listens. The one 'warning' I have is that they have some harsh vocals (as well as beautiful clean vocals), I know that's a deal-breaker for some people so just putting it out there. I'd recommend their first album "Portal of I", but all of the albums are excellent.

Regarding Ticks & Leeches; it was made in response to their label wanting a heavier sound to capitalise on trends for a hit single. And so, Tool took the opportunity to call them parasites. The reason for the longer than usual breakdown was to make it unpopular on radio.

I can watch your both Lateralus reactions whole day. If you lie down on a bed and listen to Reflections with headphones it will become one of your favourite Tool song. The quite part in Thicks and leeches is a big fu...k you to record label. They wanted to put out a radio friendly heavy Tool song. So Tool made a heavy song with idk 4min quite section in a song.
