EMF is based on activity, when ghost throws something or turn on e.g. radio and you will put EMF near to it, it wiil show you the value of EMF. Its not based on "walking through ghost room". On top of that Tier I EMF is very short range which means you need to be very close to touched/thrown item.

Tier 1 is also inaccurate because it's an analog device, which is in contrast to other EMF devices, which are digital. In other words, when Tier 1 EMF meter swings to EMF level 4, it can up shoot a little and the needle might be above 5 for a moment. If the ghost leaves EMF level 5 traces, then the tier 1 EMF reader will shoot way above the 5 mark and it stays there, while lower EMF readings only tips the 5 mark. This can (and has) caused some confusion with newer players because they claim they saw EMF5, but the ghost turned out to be something which cannot give EMF5. More often than not, this because they saw the needle tip on level 5 mark, but it turned out to be the reader up shooting a little after detecting EMF4. Also, the EMF5 means that the ghost "can" leave EMF5 traces when it interacts with things, but it doesn't mean it has to. For example, when the wraith uses its ability (teleportation) the ability use always leaves EMF2 signal, even though wraith could leave EMF5 marking with other interactions (blowing out a candle, throwing an item etc.)
