Too Nice For Work? Wesco Jobmaster Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Wesco Jobmaster is right up there with the best of the best work boots from Whites, Red Wing, Nicks, etc. I'd argue that in some regards they're even better! In this video I give you a rundown of my Wesco Jobmasters.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

Wearing jobmasters right now. They were my every day boots as a forester for years. Transitioned to working as a mechanic where I wore them every day for another few years. 11 years of wear and I finally had them rebuilt. These boots are worth every penny. The only reason I don't wear them much these days is I am now required to have polished toes at my new position at work; I went with rough out vamp & counter on the rebuild.

I agree with everything you said here. I have a pair of British Tan Jobmasters and White Bounty Hunters in the fancy Wickett & Craig leather. I would still say that the Wesco is a nicer boot overall; I'm STILL breaking in the Bounty Hunter, whereas the Jobmaster was good to go about a week after minimal wear.

Those boots with the brown thinner stiching and the contrasting white thicker stich pattern look amazing. You're right these do look a notch above the Nick's boots. I'm inclined to get myself a pair of Jobmaster boots just to wear them casually. The value for money seems incredible too. Once again really good one Carl , this review helped answer my questions and doubts about Wesco boots.

I have JM in HH tea core with brown stitching. I had the same reaction when I unboxed them. Freaking pieces of art. Sizing to me was a 1/2 size smaller than my Whites BH but Chris stretched them a1/2 size and all is good. Wes I finishing is more refined than Whites, but the arch ease in Whites is so awesome. Whites seems to lock my heel and foot better in the boot. Both are great and you’re dead on with Bakers. They’re great doing business with and paid the shipping costs to have Wesco stretch my boots. No brained.

WOW Carl! Those are some sweet looking boots!! I wasn't sure about that white kevlar contrast stitching from yesterday's thumbnail. But after seeing this vid...good choice. I like the shape and design of these Wescos better than the Nicks. Nicks toe box looks a little wide to me, and I don't like how Nicks look after they've been worn a lot. Shorter break-in. Cheaper price. Great looks. Lots of customization options. Wesco looks like the way to go. Now I just need to identify a problem to justify buying a pair of these! Thanks for a great video with lots of good, clear views of these boots. Stay healthy, Carl!

Thanks Carl - another terrific video. I have the same dilemma with several of my high end boots - way too nice to wear in the field. Several times over the years I've bought a second pair of a work boot to have a field boot and a pair to kick around town in. On a different note - I watched several of your older videos the past week. You're knocking it out of the park as your production skills, lighting, music, staging, etc has gained experience. @@jimboach In my opinion the Wesco Jobmasters have a less pronounced arch support than the 55 last in the White's semi dress boots that I own. However I find both provide all day comfort if you are on your feet all day - they just feel different when you first put them on. Had mine for years and would highly recommend both brands.

@murawski I've 2 ideas for videos for you: i) Talk about diminishing returns of cost v. durability. At some points, you can't make the boot thicker, add more stitching, more welting, or add another sole. Thus, money dumped into the boots becomes less 'available' in the performance/durability of the boot. ii) Talk about a trend I've seen with friends, on social, and you: putting up with enormous discomfort just to wear a particular boot. Example: that time you spent 90mins, using a grocery bag, and a 24" shoe horn, to get into a Lofgren Engineer boot - why? Why should it be work? It's like putting up with an abusive girlfriend because she's hot.

I have lots of Wesco's, Nick's and White's. They are all wonderful. There are differences, but overall they are very similar. For not much more than Red Wing Iron Rangers, they are vastly better. Someone who has worn boots like Wolverine 1000 Mile, Thursdays, etc. will have a hard time understanding how different they are. For one, they are much, much heavier. These semi-lace-to-toes are pretty rare. Most people go with either the regular Jobmaster, or the full lace-to-toe model. But they look great. I'd have a hard time mucking them up too!

Slightly different experience with my Wesco Voltfoes- had been a using Viberg Contractors for about a year when I got the Wescos, and compared to those Vibergs, they were a touch smaller and slightly stiffer. Couldn't replace the insole with something more comfy, couldn't wear thicker socks, sucked if your feet swelled up after a long day. And the high composite toe and straight heels got caught on everything. Still an insane pair of boots, but never supplanted the Vibergs. Can't say if that was a one off, but I'd probably try Nick's next, if I ever needed more boots (I clearly don't).

Carl, everyone advises always using the kilties. That makes sense if you're really beating the heck out of them on a job site. But if you're only wearing them casually, how important do you think it is to use them? Generally, I think the boots look better without kilties (with a few exceptions). Appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks. On a related note… I was on a job site where a fellow worker drove his brand new Toyota pickup onto to the job. Many of us noticed this. He got out a hammer and big screwdriver from his tool box. He opened the tailgate and put a hole through the bed of the new truck. We all stood there with our mouths open. He turned and said out loud “There, now I won’t worry about getting a scratch on it.” True story…

The don't charge 100$ to take your foot measurements, they charge 100$ to take the measurements that you send them and build a custom last for your feet. They keep these customization pieces on file for your next purchase. Seems like a lot of money but that is a lot of extra work added to the process and if you have oddly shaped or sized feet, or if your right and left are different sizes it is totally worth it.

Big fan of Vibram 100 soles. Sticky on wet or icy rocks, fairly long-wearing, etc. Not that Vibram only makes good soles - their “Portland” sole provided with the White’s “Standard Hiker” are long-wearing, hard, slippery when wet, and an altogether bad idea off the sidewalk. Any chance you’ll review the various soles commonly available on work boots anytime soon?

The only better soles that I’ve used are the Vibram Sierra Soles, but those have built-in heels and don’t work on my current 6” Smokejumpers. I don't know about that "no lineman's patch" thing.... how is that any different from "you don't need $600 work boots for *your* job"? PNW boot are generally uncomfortable and hard to break in, right? Aren't most of them overkill for 75% of people who buy them? And what about toe caps? If you don't regularly wear through your toes, then you don't "need" an extra layer of leather, poser. "You don't *need* it and *I* don't like it, so don't buy it" is a take, that's for sure. Glad I got to hear it.

  • @CarlMurawski

This is a slippery slope. Do you NEED denim? After all, it was intended as workwear. Some things get adopted into culture and fashion, look at the history of the necktie for example. To use your example, cap toe boots and shoes have become decorative with broguing and embellishments on fine dress shoes from John Lobb or Whites Smokejumpers. Other things are meant for a purpose and look silly in my opinion when used out of context. Spurs on your heel are totally fine if you're riding a horse, but look odd if you're working a cash register since they serve no purpose and actually cause more discomfort and hazard. The same can be said for a lineman patch. It makes the boots less flexible and easy to wear, but if you're wearing gaffs or doing line work they are a worthwhile tradeoff.
