    Greg Winter I don't even think this is Tony's best cover of a Lightfoot song; I feel like that'd be Tony's version of Cold on the Shoulder. This is a pretty good cover, but I have to agree with one of the earlier commenters that it's lacking a lot of the emotions from the original performance that Lightfoot gives. Nonetheless, I was pleased to hear this great song performed in a different style and am an admirer of Tony Rice's music :)

    Nobody did Lightfoot songs, besides Lightfoot, like Tony Rice. I have the compilation "Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot." It is a treasure.

    someone asked tony if GL ever gave him feedbck. tony was too humble to say what he said, but reading between the lines it must have been something like, "you do em better than I".

    The Gordon Lightfoot version of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald has a haunting and chilling sound. Tony Rice's version is very mellow.

    Funny how different people's ears are. I always preferred Tony's version because I thought it was more haunting. Love both versions either way.

    The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they called 'gitche gumee' The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed When the gales of November came earlyThe ship was the pride of the American side Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most With a crew and good captain well seasoned Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms When they left fully loaded for Cleveland And later that night when the ship's bell rang Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound And a wave broke over the railing And every man knew, as the captain did too, T'was the witch of November come stealin' The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait When the gales of November came slashin' When afternoon came it was freezin' rain In the face of a hurricane west windWhen suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin' Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya At seven pm a main hatchway caved in, he said Fellas, it's been good t'know ya The captain wired in he had water comin' in And the good ship and crew was in peril And later that night when his lights went outta sight Came the wreck of the Edmund FitzgeraldDoes any one know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the minutes to hours? The searches all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her They might have split up or they might have capsized They may have broke deep and took water And all that remains is the faces and the names Of the wives and the sons and the daughtersLake Huron rolls, superior sings In the rooms of her ice-water mansion Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams The islands and bays are for sportsmen And farther below Lake Ontario Takes in what Lake Erie can send her And the iron boats go as the mariners all know With the gales of November rememberedIn a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed, In the maritime sailors' cathedral The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call 'gitche gumee' Superior, they said, never gives up her dead When the gales of November come early

    When this song came out, I frankly thought Lightfoot's version was overblown and a bit silly (I know, headslap!). But then I heard Tony's version, and I understood.

    Tony is a great vocalist. But underrated - perhaps because his guitar playing overshadows almost anything. A lot of things are a matter of preference but it is a matter of fact that Tony left out or glided over parts of the melody of this song. This may have been by design or by accident and some may like it better or worse. But Lightfoot wrote it and in my view he is the final arbiter of the melody of his own song. And I think he had it exactly right.

    A great Version, but tame compared To Gordon Lightfoot's version, almost no emotions are vehicle as if the rhythm of small waves barely slashing on the shore.

    Lightfoot seems pretty much the same, in terms of a monotony, and just uses a lot of electric guitar for the "emotions." Either way I think this has a greater folk telling sense/aspect than Lightfoot.

    Sam 22 The Problem is that Gordon Lightfoot wrote the Original Version, and the style in which he wrote it fits the tale, it has that "Oceanesque" rhythm, moods, and even if it has Electric Guitar for emotions, well so what, any how, tastes will differ, And yes As someone has mentioned, you are biased to Tony Rice. And I'll Bet that everyone of those people that prefer his version (Tony Rice) are US citizen, am I wrong?

  • @Sam22music

    @Sam22music

    jean globensky You automatically assume that I am biased towards Tony Rice. Well, no. I grew up listening and liking Lightfoot since I was pretty young. I knew about him long before Tony Rice, who is only a moderately recent discovery of mine since I am getting more into bluegrass and flatpicking. There's a ton of songs that were covered and turned out better in the cover than the original. Some people more than others will disagree or agree with that depending on the piece. What I meant to say is that both of the songs sound musically the same. Emotionally, well, that will depend on the person. I heard the Lightfoot version a long time before I heard this.

    GL's version is almost majestic and you can almost feel what it was like aboard the doomed ship....Tony's version is more folksy, definitely different but with its own flavor. I personally play a sort of version of TR's but slower almost like GL's but I kept the verse turnarounds that TR uses....usually goes over when I play it for friends

    For me, this is just my taste and opinion, but with Gordon's music is was ALWAYS about the lyrics and not about the guitar elements and so forth. He was just a great story teller like Cash, Neil, etc. I need to re-hear the Gordon one and compare it to this version by Tony, but this is great.
