As soon as he realised what was going on, or that something was wrong, the driver said he turned to the right in an attempt miss the guy. I can't tell when the wheels start turning to the right; did they turn before he drove past the guy or after? For the guy to jump out of the way of the car and the driver to make the conscious decision to turn the wheels right to avoid hitting him, all in a split second, is amazing.

@@dracenut8915 Not a common thing with bodies even back then. Their team made a throttle linkage change that caused this. These are carbon fiber bodies also, fiberglass was replaced in the 90's.

They use alcohol for burn out then raise body & switch to nitro, its what those guys are doing after burnout turning valves to open nitro tank, so that thing was running on alcohol when that happened.

Man I was there.....that was really frightening. Whit Bazemore was backing up and his guy was telling him to stop...and he ran for the wall. The guy in who gut bumped by the car was in the pit helping get the other car ready. He fefused to leave. That is dedication.

The headers themselves, even being laid back like they are, add about 1000 pounds of downforce just from the exhaust gas coming out of them. A few years back, teams started laying them back even more to use it as thrust. To the point they were burning holes through the body. That's when NHRA stepped in and said they could be no further than 32 degrees. They raised it even more a year or two later. There's a slo-mo video on here of a header breaking loose from the block of a funny car. As soon as the exhaust started firing straight down, it lifted that side of the car off the track. It's a centrifugal clutch and yes it was in forward because they were staging. The body caught the throttle linkage on the way down.
