Tony Ortega - Scientology's dirty tricks -- then and now

Co-Sponsored by the Seattle Skeptics
"Going Clear" journalist Tony Ortega discusses Scientology's dirty tricks -- then and now
In 1971, a New York magazine freelancer named Paulette Cooper published The Scandal of Scientology, one of the first books to give the public a view into this secretive organization. She nearly paid for it with her life. What even Paulette didn't know at the time was the extent that Scientology and its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, would go to destroy someone it perceived as an enemy. By 1973, Paulette had been framed in an elaborate plot involving fake bomb-threat letters, and she faced 15 years in federal prison if convicted. Newly unearthed documents show that by that time, Scientology had kept her under tight surveillance for several years and proposed many ways to destroy her reputation and life. She was finally exonerated after the FBI raided Scientology in 1977 and found those documents, which referred to her by the code name "Miss Lovely." Eleven top Scientology officials went to prison after that raid, but more than 30 years later, Scientology is still around -- and so is Paulette. In his new, and first, book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, journalist Tony Ortega tells Paulette's story in full for the first time, with eyewitness accounts and new documents which describe the full extent of her ordeal -- and her continued fight against a group now seriously in decline. The book also describes her childhood survival of the Holocaust, and her much calmer life in Florida today with her husband Paul, as well as the latest developments in the controversies facing Scientology today. Ortega is the executive editor of TheLipTV. From 2007 to 2012, he was editor in chief of The Village Voice, and he's been investigating and writing about Scientology since 1995, when he was a reporter for the Phoenix New Times. He also wrote for or edited weekly newspapers in Los Angeles, Kansas City, and Fort Lauderdale. Originally from Los Angeles, he lives in New York and maintains a breaking news website about Scientology news, "The Underground Bunker" (tonyortega.org). He is also featured in "Going Clear," Alex Gibney's documentary about Scientology, which first aired on HBO in March.

I LOVE Tony Ortega. He is such an intelligent, brave and courageous man! I thank him for helping me understand the broken relationship me and my sperm donor have 'had/not had'. My Dad says he was on ship with LRH way back in the 70's. He says LRH is the ONLY one who knows how life works. My Dad is full of shit. Scientology is full of shit. I am a Rock Slammer. Miscavige should be investigated and imprisoned. I truly believe that. Going Clear was the best thing I've watched in years. I also believe Leah Remini is a rockstar for opening up about this crazy Church! Thank you Tony! You've been more of a father to me than my own father has EVER been! Ha haaa! GO TONY!!!!

@billyfromtheusa As far as I know the Catholic church doesn't beat its members or ruling hierarchy . Also, I've never known of a Catholic church to detain people against their own will. I do not count Scientology as a religion. It is a very dangerous cult. One can come and go in a Catholic church whenever he or she wishes. Not so in the Scientology organization.

Wonderful talk! I keep learning as I listen. Never underestimate a religious organization's ability to survive scandal, heresy, debunking, you name it. The lavish infrastructure is in place, new players will fill the slots of ousted members. They will morph the culture as needed in order to adapt. There are always young people searching for guidance with little interest in "ancient history" as newer history accumulates.

Hopefully people will do their research on scientology. I think people join these type of groups for a lot of reasons. I think some of us feel lost and are looking for someone to show us the way. I think scientology says they have the "answers". This can be alluring and then people are sucked in an don't know they are being brainwashed and used and can't get out. Cults are very scary stuff.

Why does the mainstream psychology field dislike Moral Psychology so much? Because Moral Psychology established rules on what they can say and do. Right now, a psychologist can say anything about a person, without any rules. He can denigrate and defamate, and make a normal person look crazy. Moral Psychology forbids that. Moral Psychology establishes rules on promoting good morals, and not denigrating innocent people. :) The Guidelines for Moral Psychology In Accordance with the Law 1. The basic values and virtues to be taught within Moral Psychology are respect, honesty, trust, love, compassion, dignity, kindness, sympathy, forgiveness and other attributes denoting goodness and love. 2. All people are born with a natural love of morals and desire for goodness. To suggest that some people are not, no matter how scientific sounding, is racism and cannot be accepted. Most everything in life is learned. All babies are born with love and kindness. People learn more goodness and love as they grow up. 3. Good morals should always be described in an attractive, appealing manner, not as something strict or repressive. The best way to resolve a serious problem is to learn from what happened, and forgive the people involved, not to dwell on it. Advise people to obey the law, and forget aggression. 4. Moral Psychology does not use technical terms to describe people. If a person tries to harm someone, the person doing the harassing always harms his own situation more than anyone else. The same is true with lying. A person who lies confuses himself more than anyone. Immorality creates inability. Good morals allows us to accomplish and create. 5. No drugs, alcohol or illness can ever make a person commit a crime or break the law (to suggest otherwise is incorrect grammar). Having an illness or disease can never cause a person to lose his or her morals, nor is it ever an excuse for breaking the law. Every person must be held fully accountable for any crime he or she commits. There can be no insanity defense admissible into any court of law. 6. Do not describe people as being merely uncivilized animals who must compete against each other for survival, who have no need for morals. Promote friendship and cooperation instead of rivalry and competition. All criminal behavior is a result of choice, not genetic predisposition (to suggest otherwise is racism). 7. Superstition is not taught within Moral Psychology. A superstition is any belief or notion which is based more on emotional intrigue and unprovable theories than on fact. Examples are astrology, fortune telling, UFOs, ghosts, brain scans or handwriting analysis for criminal tendencies, tarot card reading, ESP, palm reading, hypnotism, numerology, phrenology, and similar. Superstition includes all other readings, teachings and analyses that are based on opinion or speculation, not facts.

Yes, because it's run by people and people are flawed, but the good these programs do outweighs the negative which is more than I can say for scientology.
