Played this game on a whim last week. Beat it in one sitting, had no idea it was the 20th anniversary. I remember beating it several times as a kid but didnt remember the last level being so damn hard haha

The unmatched skateboarding culture that was exposed in this game is why I started skateboarding in 2004 and never stopped until now. 20 years guys. 20 years. It was cathartic to experience some events and goals you reached in this game like getting sponsors and winning contests in real life. I owe nothing to this game. This game triggered my best life.

That's amazing to hear! I never stuck with skating, but I could've seen an alternate timeline where I was in the same boat thanks to THPS/THUG.

My favorite tony hawk game of all time. Wish they did another one with solid story and a good gameplay.

Thug def still holds up.This is one of the few games that I do a playthrough of annually (along with mass effect and mafia 2) Im confident in saying thug will be one of those games that I'll always love

Although the PS2 Graphics don't hold up, the gameplay and overall story still does amazingly well! Also still has the best create a park in my opinion!

A 4k remaster of this game would make it the best thps game ever

This game just randomly popped into my head today, I haven't even played it in close to 20 years, but definitely played the living hell out of it back in the day. Might have to order a PS2 off eBay or something and fire this one up again for old times' sake.

Dude SSX 3 and this came out the same year. I was in 5th grade. I remember feeling older than that playing this game. Couldn't have come into my life at a more perfect time

God what a masterpiece of a game, they dont make it like this anymore. I also recently played it sometime ago and man it was an awesome, i was getting that kid feeling, & was just somehow enjoying myself. The feel, vibes & the soundtrack of the game took me back to the that time. THUG 2 is better in gameplay but its not quite remarkable & damn i think THUG is just a better game, its memorable.

Love that your intro featured the Jet Set Radio soundtrack. Crazy I recognized that after all these years.

Such an incredible OST

One of my favorites. Easy mode on and manual until you had a million points. I remember leaving my character on a rail that was round and let the game run for an hour just to see how many points i could get. So much fun

I remember playing this in 8th grade with my friend. We played so much we were getting into the millions on horse😆 the most competitive game in my school at the time. Kids brought their ps2s to homeroom to compete.

underground was the only tony hawk game i ever played and it was glorious

My most nostalgic memory from THUG was deep-diving into bugs and glitches, and spending hours trying to figure out how to get into many of the fully explorable out of bounds areas

I fucking love this game. Glad to see it get its recognition all these years later

The title making me feel like a grandpa :( we all have our memories on this game back in the day

That was a great watch! While THUG2 was my favourite, this game is for sure a close second. You also had a good breakdown on how beneficial the off-board mechanics are to extend combos, I kinda forgot about that part over the years.

Such a banger track

This is my very first Tony Hawk game I have ever played. I never played a Tony Hawk game before, so there are missions in the story mode that piss me off. But despite all of that, I couldn't stop playing the game. The gameplay is so addictive, that it actually teaches me to get better and try again if I fail a mission. It's not an easy game for sure, but it's also a fun game at the same time.

Loved this game as a teen

I can't wait until we a remake of underground like we did pro skate a couple years ago.

I have the absolutely worst memory ever ! 8 concussions, most due to skateboarding As well as breaking each ankle 2x, each wrist & multiple other injuries I’m 32, was huge into skateboarding when was younger even did a couple of competitions !! I remember absolutely everything about these classic games it’s crazy !

It's one of my favroite games of all time, no question about it. The rags to riches storyline wasn't anything extraordinary, but it worked for this game. Despite the relatively short campaign, I enjoyed this game. I've beat it over 13 times. The game is probably an 8 out of 10 for the average reviewer, but the fun factor was a 10 out 10 for me and it's enough to be in my top 5 favorite games of all time.

Agree'd I try to come back to the game atleast once annually, which is great because you can essentially beat that game in 2 and a half hours. Plus just the time capsule of a game that it is in reminding you of why 03 was a great year. I actually didn't know until recently that the Xbox version didn't have online. I was fortunate enough to have ps2 online at the time and I spent MANY a late night playing THUG Online as a kid. Honestly it hurts my soul more than anything to know we wont ever get a remaster or remake of it.

Great game. Great times. I'm afro Jim from the Tampa level. Can't believe it's been 20 effin years.

I've played every Pro Skater game on or around their respective release dates. This is my favorite one. American Wasteland is a guilty pleasure.

My oldest bro wasn't even into skating but he liked this one THUG was Classic tho

On top of an injection of pure nostalgia, my favorite part about replaying this game were definitely understanding some of the hidden dirty jokes that I was too young to understand at first. Plus this game featured Deez Nutz before the internet did. I mean come on

I remember the zoo mission skating around the monkey enclosure, that was class

Replayed it recently but gave up on the final battle against Eric, I did it as a kid but I dont know how, that is a brutal run.

I absolutely love how grounded the story is in this game. There are goofy scenarios that happen, but there are also lots of relatable interactions as well. I'm sure we all knew a "friend" like Eric when we were kids who turned out to be a dick, which is why that twist had so much impact.

One of the best games I ever played. Every online game went 20 minutes past 0:00 because you could darkslide to reset your balance and keep your line going forever. I hit negative numbers once which was something like 600M. LMAO oh, and does anyone else remember exchanging nuudes online with this games "face mapping"?

THUG 1 was an all time classic for this series cause of the amazing story mode. THUG 2 kind of just felt like they were trying to ride off the success of Jackass at the time, and it’s connection to the skateboarding world.

its weird this popped up because I actually started playing thug again a few days ago. it 100 percent holds up and in my opinion is the best tony hawk game. the story was just wacky enough to get you giggling while also being serious enough to keep you engaged. (unlike thug2 with its cringe story and lame vehicle missions/bonus characters) also the flow of this game is great, the way you level up your stats with challenges and have to progress further to unlock more stat challenges is perfect, so if you have the skill you can level your character up most the way with one good combo at the start of your playthrough. not to mention underground had the best skating physics imo.

You know, since THPS4 there is an ingame native widescreen mode.. but cool that you stick with 4:3 with black bars doing it right if not wide.

Hell yeah it does THUG1 one of the best games ever made

@@residentsleeper5678 the mechanics aren’t that much better. The character designs aren’t event accurate in thug 2 (especially height). The maps are good but lack the excellent flow that THUG 1 possesses. Literally, New Jersey and Manhattan offer some of the best lines for combos in any Tony hawk game. Sure, Barcelona, Australia, and Berlin are fun, but they lack some of the conventional lines that are in THUG 1. I just feel like THUG 1 is better In most categories. Like, the main story In THUG 2 completely disregards the main character for some reason. The main character in THUG 2 has maybe 2 lines of dialogue throughout the entire game? Thug 2 is a fun game that lacks the some of the substance necessary to be a classic in my opinion. Regardless, I had a blast playing both games.

A THUG 1+2 Remake would print money

I also replayed Underground recently - gave up on Hangover Cure though (what a bullshit mission lmao). It's definitely one of my favorites in the franchise, though getting off your board really negatively impacted the series IMO. Walking around controls terribly and the combo run-out timer makes skate lines less interesting - I'm so glad THPS1+2 kept the wall plants and acid drops from this game but ditched that aspect. If this game were remade in that engine I would 1000% be okay if they removed that and the awful driving missions. I always appreciated Neversoft's silly minigames and half-baked features (something that's really been lost since the PS2 era), but there's something about the mechanical purity of THPS3 that makes me respect it as the high water mark of the series compared to THPS4 and THUG (which are still S-tier don't get me wrong).

Which says a lot considering how many great PS2 games there are!

In my opinion the best TH game closely followed by THPS4. A lot of people say American Wasteland is the best but I hated the visual direction they went from THUG2. The vibrant colors were not appealing for me. .

I replayed this earlier this year, and alhough fun my head can't take certain games anymore. THUG gave me a brooding headache, and while playing THUG2 I felt so sick I couldn't continue. Old graphics + the snappy camera doesn't work with me. That's why remakes can be a good thing. I wish you could make more Tony Hawk videos.
