Tony Benn in the House of Commons Iraq Bombing Speech

A very exciting and passionate speech made by Tony Benn in Parliament in 1998, warning MPs of the hundreds of innocent people that would be killed if they vote to bomb Iraq.

    This is one of the most powerful speeches I've heard in the commons. In 2 short minutes Benn shows he has more principles, empathy and sincerity than the entire place does today. Whether you agreed with him or not is irrelevant. He didn't just say what he thought people wanted to here, he talked with knowledge and feeling, the things that have completely disappeared today.

    They knew what they were doing, Iraq wasn't a miscalculation because our elites don't pay the price, they drink their nights away watching and laughing as they put the most professional army in the world against young university age men who are confused and angry many of which never had training, If I watched my family get blown to pieces, I would probably become a monster too, but hatred is blinding and irrational, the ones at the top love it, they get to put our soldiers whose lives they have ruined against Iraqis whose lives they ruined, while they sit there thinking being a complete scumbag makes them smart, in the end, same old story, we should force leaders who declare war, by law to be in the combat zone with the boys they sent there, If they refuse then why should anyone fight at all? This used to be expected of leaders otherwise many armies would just refuse to fight.

    +Oscar ZetaAcosta Very stable it was in Saddam's Iraq, wonderfully that country functioned. Not until we with our gullible citizens came in and masqueraded that man's noble plans did the whole place become unpleasant. On your point about the lie, let me give you the corollary - would you have supported the war in Vietnam if you had been told truthfully by the establishment that it's a battle against communism? Why do you assume my reason for supporting Blair & Bush in their decision is because of those WMDs? In fact my previous statement quite clearly suggests otherwise. Regime change - this is why everyone should be glad the West removed this psychopath from power. By the way, there was no lie, there were WMDs in Iraq... read Mahdi Obeidi.

    Momchil92 "Why do you assume my reason for supporting Blair & Bush in their decision is because of those WMDs? " Better question, why do you think I care of your opinion, I was talking about facts. The whole reason of going to war was based on Dr David Kelly's dossier. One that was edited in a way to suggest WMD's were being built. They weren't. The next minute he'd dead and we are at war. That's Factual. Read Hutton Inquiry .

  • @Momchil92

    @Momchil92

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Oscar ZetaAcosta Though I care about your opinion myself (because that's what dialectical arguing necessitates), I don't have to care about WMDs to support regime change. So I am now telling you that your "facts" are irrelevant - there is a larger picture to be appreciated which involves more than what you depict as dishonest and deceitful. Frankly, it's childish for western citizens to cry hysterically for being lied to in the face of all the misery that the Iraqi people would have had to endure still to this day had this supposed lie not worked on the former. But I presume you're right in a way because there wouldn't have been any Iraq to endure anything by now.

    This was, by far, the most passionate speech given by a politician I have EVER heard and every time I listen to it, it moves me to tears. Such a great man.

    As Tony Benn says, More will be killed. War and violence only creates more anger, fear, reaction and never ever solved a problem by being the same as a problem being faced.

    Best thing I've ever heard said by a politician. I was on the fence more or less regarding the the UK's recent debate on whether or not to assist in the air strikes, but when I saw this video on the eve of the vote it completely won me over.

    What has happened to us ? What has happened to this kind of principled integrity ? Shame on us that we’ve never learned lessons of the past. An inspiration like no other. We should have listened.
