Bravo Mr Spielberg 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I just realized something about this song, when Tony says "Tonight there will be no morning star." He's right because he dies that night and never sees the sun again.

Wonderful singing your heart, Ansel
The transition from Rita singing while putting on stockings, to Ariana singing in the church... MMM. They both deserved their Oscars man...
Hearing Marni Nixon and Rachel Zegler sing as Maria together made me tear up a little bit, not gonna lie.
What's unique is how "America" in the remake was brightened up, while the original was mostly dark with blacks, purples, and deep reds. Yet, for "Tonight", the remake switched from BRIGHT reds to more dark blues. Instead of police light hues, he goes for smoke and shadows.

Nice observation
I wanted to applaud Spielberg as soon as I saw Anita’s part. They managed to transform the most awkward and dehumanising part into the most ironic and hilarious one. And Maria not being passive and walking just like Tony gives another powerful dimension

@@thefirstbourne149 not the character but the representation of her character in that scene from the 61 version was insulting. The hypersexualized Latina trope is tiring. I loved how suddenly human Ariana DeBose’s portrayal was after all the violence of the rumble. After mostly showing her fierce, admirable personality and beauty, Spielberg showed her as an human being that goes through so many emotions, which is rare to see when it’s a woman of colour at the centre of the movie.

You don't need to apologize for Rita Moreno--being brilliant, beautiful, sexy, and magnetic is not, repeat not, dehumanizing. The creators of the original film knew what they were doing when they cast her. And that doesn't mean I don't think Ariana DeBose is magnificent; she is. Rita Moreno couldn't be "awkward" if she tried. Phooey on the "competition." They're both winners.

Hang on, folks: Rita HERSELF was not happy with the choices made for her--the make-up, the phony accent (esp. in her over-dubbed Boy Like That), but men were in charge, so...I think having ground-breakers like Kushner involved in the current version must have helped. Maybe I was too young to get it in the '60s, but I wept through the Spielberg one.
Chills!!! The Quintet is one of my favorite numbers, not only in the show, but in all theater music. The music is sensational, coupled with Steven Sondheim’s lyrics... I never get tired of this.

I usually don't like "super cuts" especially when it comes to material that I love and know very well. But your editing is beyond excellent (on both this video and "America"). No performance or lyric or note of music was sacrificed. Well done.

Even when they don’t use certain ones the transition is so 😊 I just let it slide or it is a good reason to hear something else instead.
Jeez, I've watched this easily four or five times and still get goosebumps at the final sequence showing everyone from both movies. Really, really well done.
I do love that eerie dark red glow in the original version when the gangs are on their way--I tell you what, Spielberg's version is brilliant and I love it, but the 1961 version didn't win 10 Oscars for nothing! It's a masterpiece for the ages.

I prefer Spielberg’s cut to black tho
The 1961 version is THE West Side Story! This film can’t be remade just as Gone with the Wind couldn’t. The original is a masterpiece, a classic and reflects the time it was made in portraying the era superbly. The aerial photography of NYC is magnificent
IMHO, The best musical ever.
The '21 version has more action, riding the subway, the scene in the church where Anita sings and is hushed, a lot of clever Spielberg interventions! But the music is absolutely the same as the Bernstein children required!
This is such a masterful blend of the two versions that highlights each of their strengths. Both movies are masterpieces in my opinion

Yes, they are. And I think it’s because Robert Wise and Spielberg seem to come from a similar school of visually expansive filmmaking.
Now imagine if you added the 1957 Original Broadway Version with these two, and then you would get the ultimate mashup!

Now I want to think that both movies were actually happening at the exact time in different parts of the city and they were both just completely oblivious to one another the entire time.
To me, this video is just perfect evidence that both versions of this film are brilliant. There were enough differences in the remake that it didn't feel cheap or unoriginal, but not so many that it felt like they were dishonoring the '61 version. I'm really excited to see what DeBose and Faist do moving forward.
Just love Mike Faist.

To hell with the comparisons, it's one rousing piece of music. I love good brass.
That last part of all ten of them was amazing
Half a century between these two great works, and they both hold up, even when intertwined. Masterful.
These super cuts do the one thing most needed, and that is to compare two absolutely perfect films. I liked the street ballet so much in 1960, but the Jets in 2021 are just ugly street thugs. They truly represent the power of organized hate. The Sharks do little better, but are somehow more human. The orchestral performances are full, loud, and the voices are support. Arianna DeBoise was worthy successor to her goddess, RitaMoreno. Mike Feist was at the top of his character. All the vocalists were amazing.
ok mixing both versions made it much more epic
the best scene in both movies. total genius to match this all together. thank you. beautiful job.
Tribute to this "re-imagining" aka as "remake" of the immortal WSS. Steven Spielberg nailed this. The music execution & choreography has never been better, the message never more clear for the ages. The characters and storied setting are so much more three dimensional. I have watched and loved the original film probably at least a 100 times or more given my 60+ years on the planet. It is dark, it is gritty, the singing is adequate, it was also trite at times, it is the best there was. I'll probably never watch that version again. Bravo maestro Spielberg!

Spielberg is one of the best ever and the remake does surpass the original in some respects, but frankly, the overall musical performance is not one of them.

I LOVE THE WAY "THEY" MIX THESE FROM ORIGINAL 1961 MOVIE WITH THE 2021 MOVIE! IT IS FLAWLESS. I LOVE IT! IT IS GREAT, EXCELLENT!
DOUBLE WOW!!!
1961 for me
I grew up watching the 1961 film (I was born in 2004) but since the 2021 version came out... I prefer the 2021 version🖤🖤
The best of both versions!
I would never dislike this even if it was an accidental. This is just perfect since I love both the original and the remake. I hope I can see the actual stage play someday in the pantages. The beginning of the song with the gangs singing is just my favorite part of the song. I’m not even joking.
This was PHENOMENAL!!!!
I absolutely LOVE this film and in so many ways. The operatic Deutsche Gramophone recording from 1985 that Bernstein did with Kiri TeKanawa, Jose Carreras, Tatiana Troyanos, et al, is one of the BEST recordings ever, PERIOD. Such talent! The documentary is even better. I had the unique privilege of seeing Marni Nixon perform at my Alma mater in the '70s. OMG, I remember it to this day. Lenny was a bloody genius and I truly hope that Bradley Cooper will do him justice in the new film.
The result of the brilliantly done intercutting is to double the excitement of this complex, innovative musical quintet, which is in itself a milestone in the history of musical theater.
whoever did this, did an amazing job. I played Tony when I was a kid, a Jewish kid from the bronx who couldn't dance well, but the mash up was perfect.... cheers...
I have literally been looking for something like this since I saw the movie before Christmas!
My whole body is tingling like crazy. Epic combo! 😍
the low harmony at 0:51.. absolutely gorgeous
phenomenal!!!!!! you're incredible at picking what to show and when !!
I love this supercut!! The transitions between both Tony's, and everyone overlapping at the end gave me chills! Also in the beginning with the Jets, switching from 1961 to 2021! This was very well done, gonna watch it over and over!
This video was the best I’ve seen in terms of comparisons of old versions of movies to new ones… usually you just get a typical side by side comparison- I loved how you included verses from each individual/group that performed the song and interposed them.. even the clips from the movies, they weren’t confusing or bouncing around coming and going too quick… very nicely done!!!
You took my breath away with this. Beyond fantastic!
They did their own singing in the 2021 version. Enough said.
Absolutely masterful editing on your part! Completely intoxicating and chill-inducing! Bravo!
