Toni Morrison's powerful words on racism

Toni Morrison, who chronicled the African American experience in fiction over five decades, has died aged 88. The novelist was the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature and is widely regarded as a champion for repressed minorities. Speaking on racism, Morrison said in an interview: "If you can only be tall because someone else is on their knees then you have a serious problem. And my feeling is white people have a very, very serious problem"

    I love how calmly and non-confrontationally she says it, too. If she was more blunt, the effect would have been to put the interviewer on the defensive, but instead, she hears and understands what Morrison has to say. Truly a brilliant woman of letters.

    I appreciate how that white interviewer didn’t get defensive. She listened and actually got it quickly... “being used to being in the center” Morrison did not shut her down, she held her accountable but kept the dialogue going. Beautiful!

    Jana wendt(60mins Australia)looked shocked when asked the question,almost offended that someone could say that to her. An award winning journalist,educated who has traveled/reported/worked around the world for years,but struggles with the idea that Morrison doesn't have white people in her books? Her mindset is the precise reason why there is still racism and that white people have a long way to go before they can fix it.

  • @iago07

    @iago07

    I actually wonder if that was a question, not from the journalist, but from society. For decades, white critics criticized her lack of white characters AND refused to call her literature “American”… it was always African-American lit… so it did t seem that the journalist was upset. And Morrison didn’t call her racist. She said the question is racist.

    @@iago07 If you look directly after Morrison replies, you will see her throat. She swallowed and then tilted her head. Her body language says it all. And I understand if she was asking based on the audience inquiry, however, she returned to the question even after Morrison answered.

    I met her in college (her books) and I could never articulate the way her prose, ideas, character development pulled an invisible weight off of me. I didn't understand what was happening all I knew is that I had to read everything she was responsible for. I think what was happening, as I soaked in her stories, it helped me start to love myself in a way that was lost to me growing up. Idk...I will love her always a brave, super intelligent, beautiful soul

She earned a master's degree in American Literature from Cornell University in 1955 followed by an academic career at Texas Southern University, Howard University, Yale, and since 1989, a chair at Princeton University.

    ghost All human beings have the exact same alleles (AGCT) and due to environmental pressures give rise to different frequency of genes, which in turn give rise to the various population groups we see worldwide. The continent of Africa contains the most genetic diversity than all continents combined. Some population groups in the South Pacific resemble some Africans but they are farthest away genetically from Africans. The Sentinels phenotypically resemble some South Sudanese but are genetically South Asian. Europeans are genetically the closest to Africans and indigenous Australians are the farthest genetically. The concept of “race” does NOT and CANNOT explain these facts. Race has always been a socio-political term masquerading as something inherent. The fact that you place high value on “distinct features” is proof that it is all a construct...and it’s sole purpose is for social, political and economic gain. The only reason why you “see” races is that you attach HUGH MEANING to INSIGNIFICANT features.

    TONI MORRISON IS A BRAVE WOMAN! SHE IS TELLING THE TRUTH! UNTIL NOW THERE ARE MANY RACISTS IN USA, UK, CHINA, EUROPE AND AUSTRALIA! I AGREE WITH HER 100%. IT IS REALLY DIFFICULT TO EXIST IN OUR SOCIETY WHEN SOME PEOPLE JUDGE YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR RACE, PERSONALITY, MONEY AND POWER!
