Toni Morrison interview on her Life and Career (1990)
Toni Morrison exists in two worlds: the visible world, bustling around her, and the world of her novels, whose characters tell about an interior reality hidden from the eyes of strangers. In her work, Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison has transported millions of readers into the experience of being black in America and confronting the realities of race. In this program, Morrison discusses the characters in her work, the people in her life, the power of love, and how the invented world of fiction connects to life.

Toni had the ability to make words dance. How she carefully chooses each word in both her work and in conversation is so inspiring to me. Strong, yet delicate. A force of light. She's the reason that I am a writer today.
One of the greatest writers to ever walk the Earth. PERIODT.
Her description of motherhood, selfhood, and liberation is absolutely breathtaking.
I don’t how I can miss someone I never met, but here I am. Though I never met her, we knew each other. Everything she wrote was a love letter to me. And each word of hers I read was a thank you to her. I hope you’re having a ball in paradise, Ms. Morrison.

0:55. I love the way she looks at the diploma she receives. She looks satisfied, proud. It’s a moment between herself and the diploma in hand. No one else is around. I miss her terribly. And also the quality of interviewers like Bill Moyers.

Crazy, how some notable figures have to die to become even more famous. I heard her name plenty, but her death got me to dig in deeper in her greatness.
Everything she says is so powerful.
Wow the liberation of motherhood brought me to tears. What an icon.
So wise. Her voice soothes you. Extraordinarily writer and very much missed. ❤

Ah yesss. I can tell he has deep appreciation for her work, curiosity about her characters and his awe of Toni Morrison is palpable. Great interviewer.
Finished the glorious book "The Bluest Eye" a couple of minutes ago and my mind needed to find out more about this exquisite author!
Oh God. My heart is so full listening to her utter every single word with so much force. What I would give to listen to her speak live. What inspiring aura and view of the world.
Ah, this has resurfaced! Thank You.
What a phenomenal interview
A brilliant, gifted and thoughtful woman!
I just love so much because of how her writing affected me. My favorite of her books is The Song of Solomon. I've read it so many times. So grateful to Toni Morrison for being here.

I have never seen you... Don't know you, but I watched a program about your handwork. I come to love you despite the fact that you are no longer there 😢RIP ❤
At first I thought the interviewer talked too much and was more interested in his own voice/opinions. But then as I continued listening, I could clearly see how well-read he was and his genuine interests in Prof. Morrison's works.

That book was like a gothic New World settler colonial nightmare. It ripped me to shreds. All of them did. Yet she manages to place that soothing arm around my soul that somehow I became stronger, wiser, more gratitude after being destroyed… She is THE American Novelist. The breadth of her vision is extraordinary. Sublime.
Here is to you.

Looking at the author I wonder if the depiction of the character matches the stereotypical trope and to what degree
So frustrating when the interviewer talks over her

To the contrary, she says that is the cry of hopelessness. People are starving for love. "It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." Love can lead to pain, but true love is the most powerful force in the universe. The Bible says, "God is love." My mathematical bent requires me to point out that when the verb "to be" is used like that, it can be thought of as an equal sign!
Would Toni Morrison have thought, "Oh, no. Another white man interviewing me?" I have to interview minority people as part of their profession, and I feel quite bad about it. And I'm white and middle aged and male.

i think you have to address the guilt, and replace it with openness and acceptance to genuinely walk in the shoes of someone else. i don't want to speak for Toni Morrison, but i am a black woman and a poet as well. In interviews, i care more that the interviewer is genuinely interested in my work, open, a good listener and asks good questions. Essentially, that my perspective does not make the interlocutor uncomfortable; rather, it adds meaning, context and substance to the conversation, as per intended.
“Racism is older than slavery”, not older than RACE slavery which is what the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade is, to be clear.
@annieareyouok7671
Жыл бұрын
Yes it is because anti blackness is epistemic it transcends time. It about a universal thought process. Everyone (by group), everywhere, all around the world, carries is anti-black ideology. People in Korea bleach there skin because being darker in skin meant you were a field worker and of lesser social status. There reasons are detached from the trans-Atlantic slave trade but the the colorism still follows the rule. To be of lighter complexion, means you’re beautiful, wealthy of greater social status. So racism in its essence is older than race based slavery that’s simply derived from that ideology.
I think we forget the one who brought and paid for us first was Jesus. He died first, gave everything and through that we know we are truly loved. He created and bought us so we are doubly His "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."- Isaiah 53:5. God bless you all and guide you in everything

It is true that Jesus paid the ultimate price to buy us, but unfortunately many who claim his name had no trouble with the idea of owning others and treating them accordingly. Thankfully there were some who did their best to treat their slaves like family, which, in Christ, is the case.
