Tongva Springs - The Gabrielino Tongva Tribe Lives Another Generation

After Genocide, the Tongva Are Alive and Kicking in Los Angeles.
This is a sampling of the festivities of the October 8th 2017 Annual "Life Before Columbus" Day held at Tongva Springs (in ancient and sacred Kuruvungna) in Santa Monica, California.
Gabrielino-Tongva Chief Anthony "Red Blood" Morales, his son Andy Morales, and their dancers brought forth traditional Tongva dances and songs preserved over hundreds of years from their ancestors.
The best news of the day was the announcement that the City of Los Angeles had officially replaced the recognition of Columbus Day - which for generations has been a grievous memory for Native American communities - with Los Angeles now officially recognizing a new holiday: Indigenous Day.
The Tribe appreciates the honoring of indigenous people in this way and is thankful to the City of LA for being the first in the nation to make such a supportive gesture regarding a national recognized holiday.
This historic decision was approved by the Mayor's office and the LA City Council.
Some of the Tongva dances presented were:
Welcome Dance
Acorn Dance
Canoe Dance
Dolphin Dance
Children Dance
Some of the activities included:
Chia Cafe
Shell Necklace Making
Reed Basket Making
Traditional Native Games
Other performances by:
SoCal Bird Singers
Ketzaliztli Azteca Dancers
Produced by Bona Publica copyright 2017

Thank you for these videos. Recently moved to the area, used to live in Coast Salish and Duwamish land in the North. I am grateful for the ability to learn more about this land here and those who live with it!

Wow this is a breath of fresh air, I always wondered if I had any native blood knowing my mothers side has been in the Los Angeles/San Gabriel area for hundreds of years. My mother never said she was Native Indian but she has similar features as this tribe here. 😊🤔🤞

Thank you .. I thank all of you but I don't understand why we are NOW called Tongva. I was raised by my grandmother. Her grandmother is now in the Tongva Language thumb nail and it's on their website, tictoc, Facebook and Messenger. I NEVER even heard the word Tongva and I was raised looking at the original PICTURE that they use. It's a set, her husband had his done also and now my MOTHER has them on her dresser. I've accepted the use of it BUT I will say again...I NEVER heard my family say that word till I came home for a visit. MY grandmother filled my life with stories about the Tejon Ranch and the life at the mission... Where they worked DAILY. Her father worked there but her GRANDMOTHER lived there. She spent time there with her LARGE family. I left this to calm down after seeing a Caucasian dude getting himself AND his Caucasian wife go through a naming ceremony. After the chant they let him speak and his ignorance and EGO took over. He ASKED everyone to chant the Dallas COWBOYS game song AND ASKED THEM TO DO A DANCE (SINCE THEY APPARENTLY DANCED IN THE CEREMONY) HE Asked THEM TO DO THE DALLAS COWBOYS CHEERLEADERS DANCE!!!!! I'D REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED AND WHO THE HECK ALLOWED IT. I WAS SO ANGRY AND FILLED WITH DARKNESS I HAD TO GO CHANT AND (RE) WASH MY BODY AND BLESS MYSELF WITH TOBACCO!!!!! WHO EVER I MEAN THE PEOPLE WHO ALLOWED AND CONTRIBUTED TO THIS Horrific EVENT SOULD BE STRIPPED OF THE HONOR OF THE NAMING CEREMONY!!!

I was born on the grounds of the Gabrielino Tongva Tribe. But to my knowledge I don't have Tongva Blood. I do have native blood, my Mother is from Mexico and has ancestry dating back to the Aztecs. I'm really interested in the culture, but I'm not sure I'll be accepted.

These are the indigeonus people of the LA area. I recently found out that anthropoligists studying the tribes of southern california found that the Tongva in spacific almost definatly had contact with Pacific Islanders most likely from Hawaii. Before the 1500s, I find this facinating. Their is so much indogeonus history if you care to look. LA is not American land or Mexican land or Spanish land it is originally Tongva.

Tried joining this tribe because my great great grandmother is Anne Morales and great grandmother Palomarez born and raised in San Gabriel but when I called the tongva community center I was treated very poorly and just wanted to know what I had to do in order to possibly join because of my ancestry but was ignored and not even given any more information. I feel this is not right even for a tribe that is only state recognized
