Tone Sessions: Fillmore™ 50 - Andy Timmons - “That Day Came”

Музыка

Andy Timmons plays the song “That Day Came” from his new album Theme From a Perfect World through the new Fillmore™ 50 1x12 combo. Using both the CLEAN and HI modes with his prized mid 60s vintage Strat, Andy highlights the stunning potential of the Fillmore circuit and sounds when paired with single coil pickups and Strat-styled instruments.
Andy starts the song in the Clean mode on Ch. 1 with the Gain control around 2:00. This setting provides a beautiful, sparkling clean sound that barely clips with heavier-handed attack. For light touch or lowered instrument volumes, this Gain setting really optimizes bass bloom and fullness with brilliant, chiming, open top-end. The range of slightly higher Gain settings (above 12:00 but below 3:00) in CLEAN provides incredibly musical, clipped potential when pushed, and phenomenal touch sensitivity and expressiveness when played with lighter touch.
At 1:05, Andy switches to Ch. 2 in the HI Mode with the Gain set at 11:00. You can instantly hear the added gain, but the fundamental character of the notes are maintained and even slightly pushed forward a pinch, while the gain surrounds the note in more of a singing, halo effect. This is a popular approach for the second channel where the overall Tone remains very similar but steps out in a mix and the higher gain creates a pillow of sustain for added expression. The lower Gain settings (above 9:00 and below 12:00) in the HI mode of the Fillmore beg for exploration and experimentation - there are so many Tones available on this one small section of the Gain control for both single note AND chording for clipped, stinging and gritty rhythm sounds.
Played through a mid 60s Vintage Fender Strat through the Fillmore 50 1x12 Combo with a Celestion 90 speaker. Mic’d with a Shure SM57 and a Shure KSM 313 and blend 40%/40%/10% with a stereo room mic.

    How would you describe the tonal differences between the two amps?

  • @Indiegaze

    @Indiegaze

    5 жыл бұрын

    Nunzio Annunziata I'll be honest, I'm good at recognizing different tones, but I'm not trained in recognizing different frequencies, because I've never learned any of that....so, I'm sure there is plenty of people here who can explain it better than me.... But I'm guessing the Lonestar has a lot less mids, a little less treble and more bass.... Andy says it had a ridiculous amount of bass and very few hard frequencies. He says it has an incredibly thick gain tone, that he had to use pedals to achieve in the past. But this amp has more classic / vintage tones. I'm sure there is someone here in the comments who will tell me I'm completely wrong...

    @@Indiegaze this amp seems very mid focused.. Which makes sense according to your own analysis: by the video, we see that Andy put the Mids on 0.. Perhaps, in order to achieve a similar tone to its Lonestar one.

    @@NuZTheRockerOFFICIAL Lol....I'm an idiot...I watched the video again and apparently I didn't even notice that the settings was right there on the bottom of the screen...lol.... But Andy has many videos where he goes through the settings on his Lonestar... I, personally always thought his Lonestar was great, but I think he would sound even more amazing through a Two-Rock.

    Good question, Brandon - likely part of the reason that was the sound/settings that got dialed in has at least something to do with the fact that Andy was sitting mostly behind the amp and that's where it sounded good to him based on what was kind of a small room with lots of quick reflections off the back wall (which is only about 8 feet away from the amp). It's understandable that some might wonder why mids would be that low, BUT... 1) there's no shortage of mids in the Fillmore, 2) Pristine cleans can sound beautiful scooped like this due to the range and taper of the mid control, and 3) the multitude of everything else that makes up the sound that someone hears in a KZread video is along list of things. And, maybe 4) Like what Michael Hughes says that we have weird EQ sections in some of our amps.... haha! Not always the case, but... :)

    Hi Eric - Thanks for your comment/suggestion, and... we do! Here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWehstKdo7fUm9Y.html We do lots of different styles of videos. Our official demos tend to have little to no effects to emphasize the tone(s) of the amp, while we also offer performance style videos that include what the amp sounds like in a full mix, OR - in this case, what the amp sounds like by itself not in a mix, but with FX. Also - when an artist like Andy is performing/demo'ing for us, we defer to what the player feels comfortable playing - and in this case, Andy wanted to perform this song for us with the tone he plays with and it's a huge part of his sound. Anyway - hope this helps and hope the official demo vid gives you a bit more info that you're looking for. Thanks for your interest and thanks for watching!
