@@carlafalb2199 Have you ever done a monochromatic color pastel drawing on colored paper as a value exercise in lieu of using compressed/vine (black charcoal)? I haven't tried this yet, but was thinking of having students do this towards the end of class after they have done a few charcoal drawings just to get a little color in.

@@MShellEdu Hello! I know students always ask to use color, but it is important that they master value first. A monochromatic pastel drawing on colored paper sounds fun and you would still be working with values so that could work. You also could try working on a mid-tone paper, then using white charcoal for lights and black charcoal for the shadows. I also like using conte crayons in black, white, sanguine on toned paper (they are similar to monochromatic pastels, but harder). They are an extra expense for the students though, and I always try to keep the cost of supplies down.

Hi, could you perhaps give me some tips about drawing with charcoal when being left handed pls? I always stain everything and is hard to find a comfortable position because I tend to curl my wrist. Thank u for the video It helped me by the way

Hi Yuuki, I am happy to hear that the video helped you! Since I am not left handed, it is difficult for me to imagine what you are going through. It sounds like the side of your hand is smearing your drawing. This happens to right handed people too. Over the years, I have trained myself to hold my hand away from the paper, so that is what I suggest to my students. Try gripping your pencil or charcoal with an overhand grip and draw by moving your arm (shoulder/elbow/wrist) and not your fingers. (Keep in mind that relearning how to hold your drawing tool is similar to breaking any habit -- it will take time and commitment). Please let me know if this helps!

Why the dark outline on the far left side? The reference appears to be almost imperceptible on this side but I'm having trouble doing that

It’s not an outline, but more of an invented shadow to give the cloth more volume on the left side.
