Very nice comparison in detail and value. As much as I am disappointed by Tomy's failure to close off the seams, the value of this piece is still great bringing us lights, detail and the solidity of a die-cast product.

I have one of these and I hear you. I think they probably put the cart before the horse a little bit it terms of design. I think they just ran out of time and money. $599.00 for this is a steal. The polar lights models are really great as well. Even they cost more than this thing did and plastic is far easier to deal with. If they didn't limit the production to such a small number maybe they could have had more design time over all I am happy with it. Heck a little bondo and some paint and I will have it perfect...LOL. Watch someone will do it.

It's great having options for non-builders. I have friends who are eager for me to give up one of builds. TOMY looks like a durable option for them. I made my own mods and electronic boards which made the Polar Lights builds around $250 each (paint, glue, electronics) I did the original Pilot, the 2nd Pilot, the 2nd season clean, and the third season with weathering. I like the weathering on the PL prebuilt, but the rust ruing is weak. The colors of the bits on the TOMY were also more accurate. It would be nice if the bridge could be repositioned on the TOMY. My motors were digital motors that were extracted from old CD drives and driven by old 222 timers for the two ships that had spinning Bussard collectors. I have to admit making them is the fun for builders which is why we have too many replicas in our homes.

I’m kicking myself for not getting that TOMY. I knew it would have some finish issues but the total light package, finished shuttle bay (including janky shuttles), and being die cast as opposed to styrene make it a ridiculous value. It even has the little “protruding phaser emitter” coming out of the sensor dome. Now these are $1500 on the secondary markets.

I contemplated cancelling my order when I saw the seam lines and such in the final photo. But glad I didn't. I like it. Pretty wild the markup on secondary market. Hopefully Tomy does another ship.

@@TheRealCobraBurnout the light up detail is amazing. Know what would be REALLY awesome? A spacedock diorama, with the gantry surround, that could be done with 3D printing. I'd love to see Adam Savage tackle that. It would have been really nice to have miniature figures of the crew, Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu and Chekov on the bridge. It's a bit strange seeing the bridge empty on such an iconic ship

I can build a better quality Enterprise for around the same $$. Honestly the shuttles were horrific and I love the shuttle and have a newer Polar lights kit of that too. As a model builder I couldn't live with the seem lines on the Tomy kit. The polar lights kit is actually more correct when it comes to the streak marks on the ship. The Tomy model is more correct when it comes to the hull color and the color of the rust ring around the top of the saucer.

These are both beautiful models, for their own reasons. Unlit PL is what it is, but doesn't take away from a solid looking static display piece. I somewhat prefer the weathering on it as well, seems a bit more "Year Four of Five", versus the maybe "out of spacedock 6-12 months" look of the Tomy. However, for overall impression and *value* the Tomy "wins" (I've already said both a great). The lights and modes are fantastic! The saucer separation seems like a needless but incredible inclusion. Open, detailed shuttle bay with shuttles (quality of shuttles notwithstanding), and a viewable bridge (yes, I know, why not offset???) Die cast metal and a very cool stand base compared to the somewhat basic of the PL - I know it needs to be bigger, more solid for the weight, but PL could've just as easily done a plastic Delta shield base PL was $450 two and a half years ago compared to Tomy's $600 now. That's just inflation, nevermind the excesses offered by it! I am envious in the extreme. Kickstarter took a lot of my money a while back, so I took a break. Seems I may've missed some cool stuff 😔

This is a great comparo. I haven't seen a Polar Lights pre-build in person, but it's interesting that so many comments about the TOMY model concern the weathering. In your video, the PL model looks pretty heavy handed in its application of the weathering and makes the TOMY seem almost subtle . The streaks at the front of the saucer are way better on the PL for sure, though. I have the TOMY as well and am pretty happy with it. It reminds me of something like a Lionel Standard O model train. It's close, but because of the way it's made it has to have compromises. Handling such a large, diecast metal spaceship is a special experience.

Much thanks. Good point. As i look at them more and more side by side i see more. Tomy’s weathering seems heavier up front but then lighter on the secondary hull and nacelles compared to PL.

Yes. Gene Roddenberry wanted it that way. Yes Enterprise did enter atmosphere if that helps your imagination. But real space vehicles incur “space weathering” phenomenon. Space Weathering is described as the type of weathering that occurs to any object exposed to the harsh environment of outer space. Unlike on Earth, a man-made vessel wouldn't be affected by rain or wind. But the constant flux of high energy particles and micrometeorites.

The Tomy is definitely the best of the two. I had an original AMT back in the ‘70s but was nowhere near as good as either of these due to my limited skills back then. I don’t remember any weathering in the original series, she always looked pristine to me plus there’s no weather in space, so I don’t get the fascination with weathering details. Even if there was any weather in space, the navigational deflector and shields would have taken care of that or the ship would’ve been shredded in the first minor storm it was in due to the intense friction a grain of sand or snowflake would’ve created due to the traveling at such high speed. I actually prefer the centered vs offset bridge because the offset bridge never made any sense from a realistic perspective but I do understand why they did it for filming purposes. I like the saucer separation option because it was mentioned in the original series just never showed. I suspect had it had another season or two we would’ve seen that onscreen.

@@inkermoyadd in the fact that it's diecast and not styrene... Edit: honestly I would have preferred plastic (with an internal metal frame) over diecast if it meant lower costs, better detailing, reduced stand engineering and reduced seams though. I don't really get the preoccupation with diecast as "higher quality", as both look pretty much the same on the shelf when covered with a coat of paint.

@@inkermoyNope. I've got 1k in materials alone. But it will have servos, internal steel support armature, fiber optic and LED lighting, interior WIFI color LCD cameras of the shuttle/cargo bay and arboetum, an arduino controller... putting all my electronics, architecture and styrene modeling skills to work. My model would cost about 10K when done. I'm still collecting materials. I do plan on documenting the build as others have done here on KZread to share, but that's when I retire in about 10 years. I'm still sketching circuits and concepts as I think them up, mae cardboard mockups that future styrene building will be based on... I have a 2nd 1:350 1701-A model that will be kit bashed in to a Dakota class shutter carrier.

I don't know which of these two I dislike more... both models feature horribly overstated, out-scaled paint jobs designed to emulate the studio model in its current state, which may itself never have been intended to be seen beyond the special effects shots of the original television show. The TOMY version features a nice big seam around the primary hull, horribly-visible caps covering construction screws, and what appears to be ejection-pin scars on most of the major components. While many of the castings seem to have been adapted from the Polar Lights model, the painting, especially of the interiors, is rudimentary at best. The lighting of the TOMY model is likewise overstated and overly bright, and the gimmick of the detachable saucer seems little more than just that. The best feature of the TOMY model appears to be its ponderous weight, which probably translates to a sturdy model, unlike the Polar lights model, which is injection-molded styrene and susceptible to eventual warping and sagging without some kind of interior armature; this is why the original was built of metal, wood, and fibreglass, with careful attention towards the weight of the major components. Are either worth the price tag? If one lacks the ambition, or fear they may not be up to the challenge of assembling, painting, and detailing the un-assembled kit, either of these presents a palatable alternative, if one can afford to have somebody else build and detail them.
