    I have the utmost respect for Tommy Lasorda. I’ve met him a couple times, just a great guy. But I completely disagree with him. I’m all for Pete rose never working In baseball again. But the gambling had nothing to do with what he did as a player. He’s the all time hits leader. One of the greatest 50 players of all time. He should be in the hall of fame.

    For argument sake, what if a hall of fame level player was convicted of child molesting, murder, or running a prostitution ring? Should he be inducted in the HOF, because his actions were outside of baseball? If your answer is "yes", then you are consistent in your thought.

    @Christopher Davis I am not saying that any one of those crimes are not worst than gambling by ANY means. They ARE. But it specifically states that: Major League Rule 21 (d). It is posted in every baseball clubhouse and the language is unambiguous: “Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.” Seems pretty straight forward to me...

    If you’ve heard enough Lasorda interviews, you know he says what he has to say to keep himself in good standing with MLB. His words aren’t worth 2 cents. Pete was a big part of pennant winning teams & holds the hits record. He’s one of the great players to ever play the game. That’s what having a plaque is all about. Celebrating the great players of the game. Not their mistakes.

    Let the record show that when Lasorda was coaching (1973-1976) and managing (1976-1996) the Reds won the West exactly 3 times (1973,1975,1976) while the Dodgers won the West exactly 3 times (1974, 1977, 1978) while Pete was strictly playing. If you add the time when Pete was player/manager, then the Dodgers get 2 more (1985, 1988) so it's 5-3 Dodgers. In other words, you and P (the original commenter) are the clowns. Learn your history before you speak.

    Please understand something although you may already know this, the Hall of Fame has nothing to do with MLB. I know that sounds stupid but let me explain. The Hall of Fame is a separate entity from MLB. MLB does not answer to the HOF and the HOF does not answer the MLB. The HOF has its own set of rules. One of their rules is, if someone has a lifetime ban from baseball they are not eligible for the HOF. So until MLB lifts its lifetime ban Rose will never see the Hall of fame. Additionally, Rose knew exactly what he was doing was wrong. And he did it anyway. Then he Lied, Lied, Lied about it..... For decades!!! He was involved with bookies at a very high level who were connected to organized crime. As manager he could have easily thrown games by substituting lesser players, put in pitchers he knew were not up to the task and he possibly did. His accomplishments on the field as a player are definitely HOF worthy. But just like the steroid guys, if you break the rules that you know are in place to keep the Integrity of the game, and you get a ban from baseball, the HOF will not even consider you. As it should be.

  • @michaell874
    @michaell8744 жыл бұрын

    The MLB Hall of Fame has already been tarnished by all of the steroid cheats and the cover up which took place between the owners and the players. Pete Rose and Joe Jackson both deserve to be inducted together into the HOF, but it does not make one iota of a difference because player is a legend and has left a legacy that many that have been voted in have lacked.

    I was born and raised about 13 miles NE of Cincinnati in Milford, OH. I grew up idolizing the Big Red Machine. My 2 favorite players were Johnny Bench and Pete Rose. That team was the greatest group of players EVER to me!!! I dreamed of playing baseball and being like one of those guys. When the story first came out, I was about a year out of high school and the big-league dreams were gone, but I still LOVED our Reds. I believed Pete when he denied the allegations. I believed him the entire time. All the years. All the questions. And then the book he wrote. Admitting it was ALL TRUE. I was SICKENED by this. Rewind back to the day he accepted the ban…Pete probably figured he would “do his time” and it would all blow over. He would apply for re-instatement in a year and Giamatti would more-than-likely accept his request and his path to the HOF was sealed. Buuuuut, Giamatti died of a heart attack about a week later and the new commissioners weren’t gonna have it. He LIED. He DENIED. He even cried. He was given EVERY opportunity to come clean and admit what he did. The reason he LIED, is because he KNEW what he did was wrong. But again, he ASSUMED everyone would forgive and/or forget. When he did admit, he said it was only on games not involving the Reds. Then later, he said “Well, yes. I DID bet on the Reds. But only to win…” I have no idea other than his past speaks volumes. I believe and agree that if he had just come clean since day one, things would be different. He may have had to wait a little while to get into the HOF (make him sweat it out so to speak), but he would have eventually been enshrined on his first ballot. But he didn’t. What Pete did on the field was amazing. He gave his all, 110% ALL THE TIME. He left it all out on the field. He set and broke records that will more than likely stand the test of all eternity. He EARNED those records and they will always be listed as his, which is 1,000,000% acceptable. What he did OFF the field locked him into his OWN PRISON WITHOUT BARS. Where, to me, he should remain. Pete will ALWAYS be known as a GREAT player. One of the all time BEST, but he REPEATEDLY effed up. I even recently heard an interview where he said: “everyone should just GET OVER IT…” No, Pete. YOU should just “GET OVER IT”

    I am not a Reds fan but I really liked the 1995 Reds squad (speed and power with great starting pitching) - Ron Gant, Reggie Sanders, Barry Larkin, Pete Schourek, John Smiley and David Wells. Now imagine if they had a healthy Jose Rijo and resigned Kevin Mitchell before he went to Japan. My goodness what a squad that would have been.

    Let me see if I can get this straight...Does Pete belong in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely. Should he be reinstated in Baseball? No. So long as Pete Rose is banned from baseball he cannot be formally considered for the Hall. And whether people think Pete has served his time (according to whom?), betting on baseball incurs a LIFETIME ban. That means Pete has not completed his time until the day he dies. Now personally, I think Pete will be reinstated after he passes on. Even then, I do not think he will get in on the first ballet. As kids, we knew Pete was not only going into the Hall, but that he was going to break Tom Seaver's vote count record. The question was whether he was going to be the first and only unanimous inductee going in. And Pete blew that. This is not about punishment (which he knowingly earned), but about what he needs to own. A couple of you get that.

    Like everyone in baseball are inocent, give me a break. Betting is the reason we watch these over paid players, and pay $10 for beer at the stadiums. Pete Rose is the real poster boy for baseball.

    You all don't understand. YES, betting on baseball is a "cardinal rule", HOWEVER, the Black Sox bet on themselves to LOSE AND they threw the game(s)! Totally different IMPO. Also, regardless of what the director threw into the "8 men out" movie, not one of them every tried to get reinstated. So there has not yet been a court ruling on such a matter... ever. IMO, Charlie Hustle belongs in the Hall.

  • @dallasbrubaker6054

    No YOU don't understand. Betting is betting. If Pete Rose knew his starting pitcher didn't have his best stuff on any given day, was struggling in his last 2, 3 starts and the Reds were facing Clayton Kershaw, you don't think he would bet on the Reds to lose? One thing all gamblers have in common: they never want to lose. If Pete Rose had a chance to win $100,000 on any given night, he would have bet on his team to win; likewise, he would have also bet on them to lose. It just depends on how he felt gave HIM the best chance to win, not his team.

    obbzerver one more thing how many players are caught using steroids using drugs domestic violence and they're forgiven little suspension and back in the league they go I think it's time to let mr. Rose into the Hall of Fame not for his actions as a manager but as a player and for the great things he done in the game heck OJ killed two people and he's in the Hall of Fame

    *"...they investigated him and they never not once ever mentioned fixing game..."* Doesn't matter - it's completely irrelevant. *"...how many players are caught using steroids using drugs domestic violence..."* Doesn't matter - it's completely irrelevant. *"Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible."* Nothing unclear about this. Rose was aware of this rule and he chose to break it. It doesn't say "unless you're a popular player with great career stats. Nope, doesn't say that. The only way it means anything is if it applies to *everyone* in the game. Did Rose bet on games he participated in? Yup. He's out.

    Must be nice to be so perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. I thought this was America where you can make a mistake, serve your sentence and are forgiven. Some people are acting like God. However God has given us all grace in those who believe. We are all sinners. Those free of sin cast the first stone. People make mistakes. I think we as people should forgive and forget. Rose has asked for forgiveness served 30 plus years of a lifetime sentence. Some murderers don't serve that much time. I guess also there are just a bunch of choir boys in the hall of fame right. I is ok to deal drugs and still be in the Hall of Fame. This particular player was forgiven and allowed in. If you ask me dealing drug is worse. It is also alright for baseball to promote legal gambling too. This is pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Players get suspended for peds and are forgiven and allowed to coach.
