    Tommy is truly one of Swedens national treasures. From teaching people to play guitar in the early 70's to headlining events next to Celine Dion (and she looked like she was about to faint when he started singing, I think you did react to that.) He also seems to be just a great dude to hang out with, from interviews and stuff.

    In the musical Chess Tommy plays the Russian chessplayer that leaves Russia (during the cold war) and when he is intervieved by reporters he sings this song about leaving but leaving his heart behind. So the song is actually about Russia. Feels a bit strange in times like these. I love this song though.

  • @NickofMusic

    @NickofMusic

    The song isn’t “about Russia.” It’s about Anatoly finding home in love. That can be Russian (land not country) and it can be Florence and finding home with her. it’s the first time in the show he expresses he belongs anywhere. It’s not in Russia, it’s wherever she is.

This is a pretty cool video to react to: "Les Miserables: Do you hear the people sing: Sung by 17 Jean Valjeans from around the world" (You can start at 1:30 it´s a pretty long sequence whent they parade in with flags first).

    Hi Paul..Love your channel! Here's a little help for you to understand and to pronunce the Scandinavian " Wierd " letters Å, Ä and Ö. It's quite simple, actually. It's just a 'lazy' or late mediaeval way of writing a posh one letter instead of two! - The Two letters, have during the time and aristocratic fashion morphed into One. Ex. Å is a simplier way of writing AA, Ä is dito AE and Ö is just OE. Look at it as the second letter, - A and the E,s, have climbed up and layed themselves down on top of the first letter and thru time got styled into just a ring, dubble dots or a simple dash.. Å is pronunced as in ' Forgo(å)tten, Ä sounds like Brea(ä)k or Breakfast, and finally Ö sounds almost like Lea(ö)rn ...Piece of Cake...HaHa. My Best!

    You should check out his studio version of this song which he sang for the soundtrack of the musical ‘chess’, it’s a lot more powerful & some of the notes he hits make me shudder, which I feel are a little bit lacking in this performance, although it’s still very good. Many famous singers/groups have covered this song & although some are really good, I think this song, anthem,will be for ever associated with this song. Whenever I hear his voice I just think ‘anthem’. With regards to the musical ‘chess’, IMO it is one of the best musicals from a ‘music’ point of view. It gives many different types of music, a bit of pop, which you would expect from a musical written by one of the greatest pop groups that there ever was, but there is a lot more wot I would say are songs which are more influenced by classical music & a lot more of an orchestral sound & semi operatic vocals. It’s particularly amazing when you know that this is the first thing the boys did after ABBA, in fact the boys had already begun workin on it before the end of ABBA. It was quite a departure from ABBA stuff, although if you listen to their albums in full, particularly 1980 onwards there are many tracks that incorporate this more orchestral sound. Even in 1976 they released their ‘arrival’ album & even back then there was a track on it called ‘arrival’ which shows their skill at orchestration. I think you might be surprised if you checked out their album tracks, as opposed to all the famous songs we associate with ABBA. Finally, back to chess, one criticism of ABBA historically is that whilst their music brilliant, their lyrics were often regarded as naive. Their lyrics did get better over the years that they were together. Although they can speak English, particularly the boys, who speak perfect English, I think there is/was a slight problem with the nuances of writing lyrics in a language that is not your mother tongue, however well you speak it. However, for the musical ‘chess’ the boys worked with one of the greatest wordsmiths of all time when it comes to songwriting, particularly for musical theatre, Tim Rice, who I suppose is most famous for his partnership with sir Andrew Lloyd Webber who are responsible for some of the greatest musicals ever written. This collab with tom & the ABBA boys gave the fantastic music but it was now accompanied by more ‘grown up’ lyrics, which was good because although it’s called chess, the actual story isn’t about chess, it’s set around the game of chess but it’s actually about the 80’s with people gettin divorced & the tensions between Russia & the west in the Cold War years, which I think was especially scary for the swedes because of their geography, if war did break out it would be impossible for them to stay out of it simply because of their geographical position between the two. It’s a very ‘bitter’ piece of work, full of angst. It’s brilliant, you really must check it out!!
