English lyrics Iam a poor farmworker, but I live anyway. Days come and go, while I work hard, harrowing, sowing seeds and plowing, sweeping the barn floor, digging and carrying walk behind my cattle, screaming, whistling and swearing. I am a poor farmworker and I chew my tobacco And when Saturday comes, I want to get drunk. Then, when I get high-spirited, I want to tussle and fight Sleep at a girl’s house, that’s what I’d like to do too, of course. Then,Sunday comes and our priest wants me to go to church, but that is when I sleep the most. Priests can sleep the whole day on Monday ,but a poor farmworker must start working again. That’s how the week goes, every day and every year. I walk with my scythe and I plow and sow seeds I guide my cattle and pile hay Harrow, work and slave and one day I shall die. Stands there, poor farmworker, before Heaven’s gate A little scared and sorry for the sins I committed. One shall not drink, be with girls and fight. The Lord, God in Heaven is quite disappointed, of course. But then the Lord says: poor farmworker, come here, I’ve seen your struggle and your persistent hard work, Therefore, poor farmworker, you are welcome here. Therefor poor farmworker, you will be near me. Oh, I, the poor farmworker stand so quiet before God And then he dresses me with the whitest of all garments. Now, says the Lord, your work is done. Now, poor farmworker, you may rest.

"Bonddräng" can also be translated to "Farm hand", which in my humble opinion would fit better. A "dräng" was basically a man who lived and worked on a farm, often together with several others, and the pay was food and housing (with exceptions). So naturally these men were poor, as the title of the song suggests. The female equivalent of this would be "piga", but they more often helped out with the household chores of the farmers family, rather than the heavy farm work.

It’s about the struggle for those who stayed in Sweden during the hard times when people starved or left to America. About 100 years ago. This is what make me love the spirit of my people that stayed and never gave up. Greetings from Sweden 🙏🇸🇪

One of the most beautiful swedish songs❤️ It’s a song from the swedish movie Emil i Lönneberga from 1971. The story about Emil is written by Astrid Lindgren, one of Swedens most famous authors, and she also wrote the lyrics to this song❤️

Even here in Norway Astrid Lindgren is a «national treasure». We are bottle fed her stories and now we read them for our kids and sing the songs.

One thing that really shows how beloved Astrid Lindgren was to the Swedish people was her funeral. She got more or less a state funeral. Her coffin was escorted to the church by the royal guards. In the church, the royal family attended together with members of the parlament.

The child Emil of the story written by Astrid Lindgren is a very good friend to the hardworking farmhand Alfred who here describes all his toiling life. The author Astrid L wss well versed in the old-time songs sung by farm maids etc in the 1800ies. She wrote this and hit the feelings of those old songs bang on. The stories about Emil depicts how a young boy grew up in the country back then. You could compare that lifestile as an swedish equivalent to the Laura Ingalls stories from the Little House on the Praire.

Thank you for your reaction! This song has a beautiful text. In Astrid Lindgrens funeral another Tommy (Körberg) was singing this song. There where loudspeakers outside the church so all people could follow the funeral. I was there with my kids and we recognaised a white dove fly iver the church round and round over the church the whole funeral. When I hear this song I always thinking of that moment. I know Astrid was there with us.

@@SueSueandthewolfman It was a couple of months ago, during the winter. Me and my wife and my youngest daughter went to the grocery store and while we walked around I saw the back of this big guy walking around with his grocery basket and I thought "this could be Tommy" and when he turned around... it was Tommy! We swedes are reserved and dont like to bother people so at first I didn't do anything, but I told my wife I had to thank him for what he is doing and that we highly appreciate everything he is doing for everyone with his music. So I called him "Hey Tommy!" and he turned to me and I introduced myself, we shook hands and then I thanked him for everything he is doing, my wife gave him compliments as well. He's a very friendly and humble guy, a gentle giant, he thanked us a lot for the support and then he dug deep into his pocket and gave us a few of his Sabaton guitar picks with his signature "Tommy J" printed on them as a token of gratitude. Then we shook hands again and my wife said we're looking forward to next friday, then he laughed and thanked us again for the support. That was it, then he went on to buy his groceries.

This is about the Christian (lutheran) notion that you should work hard all your life, stay at your "station" in life, and not expect any rewards in life. Your reward for all your work, your blood, sweat and tears will be given to you in heaven. Don't try to climb the social ladder and become someone, if you're a poor farmhand it's because god wants it that way. Alfred, the farmhand who sing this song in the movie, is one of the lucky ones, he has a great employer who's fair and wise. Others wan't so lucky and was really mistreated and used.
