How do you push some of the world's best climbers to their breaking points? Add ice to an already burly crack climb. The conditions might have seem perfect as our four climbers arrive at the summit of Chamonix's Aiguille du Midi, but on the rock, the reality is very different. Melting ice has trickled its way down the classic crack climb 'Enfer du Decor' (7b+), transforming the already stout challenge into a cold, slippery nightmare. Undeterred and with teeth firmly gritted our teams abseil in to give the line their best attempt. After a hard-fought but ultimately unsuccessful attempt on the route from Emily, Tommy steps up. The wet, treacherous conditions test both his determination and his climbing ability but after a hard-fought grapple with the granite splitter he makes it to the belay. While he and Emily continue to the summit by the easy, finishing pitch, Alex and Hazel get started on the route. Hazel's vast climbing experience would normally put this route easily within her reach, but the unwelcoming conditions put it just beyond her on this occasion. The pair battle their way to the summit with a combination of dogged determination and some unconventional crack climbing techniques from Alex. With the route complete and both teams stood atop the summit of Chamonix's most famous peak, only one task remains, deciding who goes home with the Epic Climber trophy.

Tommy is so bad ass, he has nothing to prove to anyone, we all know he is the man. Its nice to see how encouraging he was to all the other climber who obviously are all top notch.

I really like the attitude of Tommy, Alex is really good and quite possibly the best, but he didn't make it easy to root for him, he came off rather arrogant. But even when he was arguably second best, Tommy was a true man being able to swallow his pride and give the trophy to Alex.

Tommy totally kicked his ass in an alpine environment. And he knows it. Superiority is being is secure you can be magnanimous. Tommy knows Megos is stronger, but it doesn't matter. Tommy can beat him where Tommy is strong and thats actually the area the public recognises as real mountaineering.

Nowhere near this grade, but I did the south face of Aiguille du Midi in 2000. Climber the Rebuffat route, but got off route at the top and did the final 6A pitch of Midi Sonne. About 25m without gear up a chimney/bridging corner, with a crack in the corner and meltwater running down it. Shit... scary. Chimney had a capping block with first gear in a long long way. Big bomber nut. My partner said a French Guide who followed me up was cursing and panicking (actually he said crying) even more than I did. (actually, I'm always calm, getting excited doesn't help)... Dripping down my arms and everything. Funny thing is - I was off route, and the guide followed me! Tommy won.

I've climbed the south face of Aiguille du Midi - what's not said is despite the grade, gravity is not the only enemy. 3800m what is easy at low altitude makes your head spin there. You're in a race - anaerobic muscle performance is an egg-timer on your lead. But conversely - there - go too fast and your head spins, you get dizzy and fall. Tommy's lead at that grade, and in those conditions, was worth much more than the 7b+ headline figure.
