Tombstone vs Super Megabyte

Спорт

Two 340 pound "Super Heavyweight" robots fight to the death. These are 90 pounds larger than the Heavyweight bots you see on Battlebots.
Super Megabyte and Tombstone go toe-to-toe. These are early iterations of both Tombstone and Megabyte, far from the bots you see today.
Filmed at Robogames 2005.

    from this angle you can really tell how massive these robots are. in the shows you don't get a size reference.

    Mega/gigabyte is such an interesting case. Pre-modern-battlebots he was terrifying, beating biohazard so badly he had to be retired, beating tombstone, but now he's... Kinda lacking. Like I swear he does easier or something. When I heard we were gonna have a decendant of megabyte in modern battlebots, my chips were on the table for him. But I suppose the games evolved or something.

    In retrospect Biohazard wasn't that durable if you really look at how it was constructed. It was thin titanium over 5052. Thing is, during the original BattleBots series spinners just weren't putting out that much power, especially not in the heavyweight class. Megabyte was really the first truly powerful spinner in the heavyweight class.

    Different weight class and electronics batteries and motors especially have gotten smaller and more powerful allowing for less heavy bots

  • @evernewb2073

    @evernewb2073

    3 жыл бұрын

    funnily enough a fair few of the bots in that weight class were actually lighter ones where they just straight up added weights to enter in the competition, there weren't all that many built specifically for the superheavyweight competitions because there just weren't all that many superheavyweight competitions, it was also harder and/or significantly more expensive to find good parts for them whereas the middleweight on down could usually find stuff to repurpose and the heavyweights had at least some repurpose/suppliers/etc available. on top of that as the bots get bigger they get proportionately slower and less durable, so you actually get the best fights from the crowd's perspective from whatever weight class keeps things fast, but not too fast for the crowd to really observe, back then that was middleweights nowadays it's middle to heavy. seriously, if you look at a beetleweight competition where the bots have more than a hobbyist's budget put into them they are just absolutely all over the place. even the low budget ones get pretty impressive with how accessible control electronics and small high performance motors have gotten lately, also helps that junk like Styrofoam and cereal boxes and friggin' chopsticks are legitimately good materials choices at that scale.

  • @SFCJack

    Yeah, Super Megabyte and Tombstone at the time were both superheavyweights. Modern Gigabyte would win thanks to the advancements in technology. The power you can get for modern heavyweights is available using components a fraction of the size of Super Megabyte's parts
