    While you are correct that someone else wrote the lines, the magic is all in the delivery. Kilmer nailed it, making lines that could have sounded cheesy or confusing sound perfect. That is what great acting is all about. It is more than just reading what is written, it is in his body language, facial expressions, tone and accent. IMO no one could have delivered htose lines better than Kilmer in this movie.

    rick Kennedy- Here's the thing. While you're correct that the actor brings the lines to life, it's the lines themselves which are the foundation of the creative endeavor. We'll never know how another actor might have handled those lines. You say only Val could have delivered them as such... Okay, sure, why not? But out of a hundred other actors, known and unknown, who really knows? There might have been some unknown genius out there that made this performance look like amateur hour. My original point being, the actor gets all the glory, but the writer puts in the most important work. Everybody wants to see another film with Val after this performance. Hardly anyone seeks out a movie by the same screenwriter. It's kind of a drag for the writers, but oh well... That's Life!

    yes indeed - its a fantastic film not just for a western but for a film in general......its near flawless! Val was EPIC as Doc - his demeanour was exactly as you would imagine Doc Holiday to be....and not to mention Kurt as Wyatt - he was so convincing. The sharp one liners in this film should make it one of the most referenced films in history :)

    I love that throughout the movie Doc is totally a shadow of fear. His intelligence and skill make him a force even his friends approach with caution when in a drunken state. And when he's lucid hes like a walking undertaker. At the very end you can see Ringos true feelings surface when he says he was just messing about. Under all the cool from the beginning everyone was aware you dont fuck with Doc Holiday.

    A big part of that is that he didn’t fear death, in fact he welcomed it. As man with his disease was just a walking corpse eventually, he knew it was simply inevitable, and viewed it almost as a death wish, he played this well by showing people that he didn’t really care if he lived or died during an encounter. So people naturally began to grow cautious of the man, especially when it involved violence.

    Kurt Russell "secretly" directed this movie, after the original director was fired. Kurt reshaped the entire movie and made it a story about two best friends. Every scene where Wyatt is in some kind of trouble or shootout, the first person to show up is Doc. Doc loved Wyatt like a brother, but Wyatt is portrayed as a little 'unaware' of this. Wyatt gets the hint when he tells Doc, "This isn't your fight, Doc". Doc was extremely offended and said "That is a HELL of a thing for you to say to me!". After the ensuing shootout, where Doc had Wyatt’s back, Wyatt finally understands the unspoken love and unwavering loyalty that Doc had for him. From then on, it's the Wyatt and Doc show. Kurt etches this theme in stone with the sanitorium scene. Wyatt presents Doc with the book, which is a straight-up love letter (and secured Doc's place in history). Then, Wyatt can't bring himself to leave his 'brother' there to die alone. He does so only out of the monumental respect he has for Doc and his tearful request to do so. Wyatt leaves with the greatest compliment Doc, a man who had no friends, could hope to hear, "Thanks for always being there, Doc". It's a soft, touching, and thunderous scene.

    So, Historian Here. This movie is the most accurate version of the OK Corral I've seen. Accounts state that had Doc not been there, the fight may not have happened. Virgil and Wyatt were deadset on disarming the Clantons, not a gunfight. Doc antagonized Ike Clanton (Who was, in reality, armed) into drawing.

  • @BeierFilms

    @BeierFilms

    2 жыл бұрын

    Agreed. It's such a great moment that rings true today. There are so many encounters with law enforcement where someone escalates an already dangerous situation and everything goes to hell. Here we have a moment where no one (save Doc), really wants a full on shoot out which could get them killed. But Doc is only a few months from death anyway and he's more than happy to be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

  • @BeierFilms

    @BeierFilms

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@NickKnutson97 One detail they get wrong is that the Earps already had their guns drawn (most likely holding them at their sides). This seemingly small advantage was arguably a big part of why they suffered so few injuries and the cowboys (who had to actually draw their guns), suffered so many. There's also an interesting theory that the cowboys may have been trying to disarm and the Earps mistakenly thought they were drawing to shoot them. Virgil testified that he said, "Throw up your hands - I want your guns!" The problem, of course, is that you can't keep your hands up while you're throwing down your guns. Because Ike Clanton had been wandering around town telling everyone that he and the cowboys were going to fight the Earps, it's totally possible that the Earps were now so prepared for a fight that they didn't realize that Billy may have been trying to surrender. Of course, no one can really say since we weren't there. What the film does get 100% right is that Ike, the person perhaps most reasonable for stirring everyone up for a fight and creating the situation, totally chickened out when the shooting started and ran away, claiming he was unarmed. There's clearly some kind of lesson to be found here about those who want to act tough and, by doing so, end up getting other people killed.

    If you think back friend it's actually a callback to the first time he says it in the film when Wyatt and his brothers refuse to fight Johnny Ringo. As they walk away he shouts a great line after them: "You wretched slugs! Don't any of you have the guts to play for blood?" to which Doc replies "I'm your huckleberry" completely in line with the original meaning about being the man for the job. Everyone forgets the line in the showdown is referring back to the earlier one (besides it makes sense at the end too. Doc is the replacement in the final duel and Ringo is stood waiting for someone to show up). All that aside you can see the original script and it is 100% "huckleberry." Not sure how it has becone such a debating point tbh - the film is full of period slang. "Daisy" is another as is the slug line from Ringo - haha "slug" should make a comeback as an insult.

    Can we talk about Micheal Biehns performance too, everyone always praises Val Kilmer, and yes- this is by far his best acting in any movie, but i love love love Johnny Ringo too, everytime i think about that character I wish there was a back story to him, and Biehn played him with such intensity, he was fantastic in the role. They were perfect arch-enemies.

    I love Michael Biehn, but everybody praises Doc not because it’s Val’s best role (which is debatable, he’s had many) but a role like Johnny Ringo’s really isn’t a hard role to play. A role like Doc Holliday and playing it WELL is a much harder feat to accomplish. Val could have easily played a role like Johnny Ringo in his sleep.
