“Doc [Holliday] was a dentist whom necessity had made a gambler; a gentleman whom disease had made a frontier vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long lean ash-blond fellow nearly dead with consumption, and at the same time the most skillful gambler and the nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a gun that I ever knew.” - Wyatt Earp speaking about Doc

Yes the marriage and the amount of years very true like most of the movie. I'd take Charlton Heston & Robert Mitchum over them all ! My favorite Robert Mitchum movie is.... Thunder Road (1958) Bootleggers in the Tennessee mountins one of the first car guys movies

I’ve been to Tombstone (including the cemetery where these men are buried), and the grave of Johnny Ringo, which is on private property because he was basically buried where he was killed. The owners let people visit as long as they’re respectful. They’re definitely worth a visit!

Val's performance in this movie really cemented his place as a serious talent. In a cast that would be any producer fever dream he truly shone portraying Doc as lovable and terrifying heroic and tragic funny and dark all without missing a step. Incidentally when he's laying in bed describing Johnny's motivation he's also reflecting on his own as you mentioned Johnny Ringo is the dark mirror of Doc. Doc was self aware enough to see his own flaws he loved to drink gamble and fight he used his intellect and skills to provoke dangerous people hoping one of them would kill him before his disease did.

Doc Holiday was a brilliant student in Georgia who was a Dentist at 19. His Hungarian lady was big nose Kate. Wyatt Earp's Jewish lady was Josephine Marcus. They lived in California and Wyatt stayed around movie sets where he told young actors like John Wayne about the West. Josephine protected Wyatt Earp's legend through the book by Lake that became the popular TV show. As the movie showed the shootout was in an alley and not in the actual OK Carol. Ringo was found dead by a trail and the cause was never determined.

Hi guys. Wyatt was never married to Maddie. She, like the other brothers wives had all been saloon girls. The 3 guys who joined Wyatt's "posse" were not all cowboys. The 2 Jacks who had the gunfight when Doc and the Earps were talking to Behan in the early moments of the film, just decided to help Wyatt out. The cowboy who told Wyatt he was done and threw down his sash was McMasters, the one who was dragged at Hookers ranch. There is an old saying about gunmen and soldiers etc dying with their boots on. Thats why when Doc was dying he looked down and saw his bare feet and said it was funny. He certainly thought he would die with his boots on. Robert Mitchum was actually supposed to be in the film (I can't remember now if he was slated to be the town marshall or Hooker) but he was injured in a riding accident and they wanted him to be a part of it so they asked him to narrate. Val Kilmer was amazing. He even had the prop guys put ice in his bed for the scene where he was sick and the scene where he died to help with his shaking and breathlessness and so forth. Oh and Wyatt was actually in a gunfight with multiple bad guys once and afterwards they counted something like 6 or 8 holes in his coat, but in his entire life he was never actually hit by a single bullet.

There is also a "Wyatt Earp" movie starring Kevin Costner that has more biographical facts along with the Hollywood dramatic effect parts about Earp's life from a boy thru his time in law enforcement up to his showdown in Tombstone and beyond and the end with him being retired and together with Josie. Wyatt actually wound up in California doing prospecting and was hired by movie studios as a consultant on western silent films and developed friendships with cowboy movie stars. Tom Mix who was a silent western movie star was good friends and was at Wyatt's funeral. An interesting movie based on some biographical facts about Wyatt's Hollywood years (with a lot of fictional drama around it) is "Sunset" with Bruce Willis as Tom Mix and James Garner as Wyatt. It is an adventure movie with some comedy and an elderly Wyatt gets involved in solving a murder along with Tom Mix which is completely fabricated and fictional, but is a good entertaining movie, showing Wyatt's clashes with Hollywood folks in the silent movie era.

I love how you guys pick out and identify the various actors, no matter how small the part. My wife and I do the same with animated films and tv (as well as live action movies). We love trying to "isolate" and pick out the voices.....the more obscure the better (we love the challenge). I'm STILL scratching my head as to how Les Grossman got passed either of us. Major fail on my part....considering "Tropic Thunder" is jam packed full of cameos. Another thing I love about you guys is that you are able to spot or recognize older, classic actors. Robert Michum and Charlton Heston are NEVER mentioned by other, younger reactors. Great vid, guys.

Thanks for a great reaction! subscribed. I live near Tombstone and can confirm the town looks virtually indistinguishable from the town today. The Birdcage is still there, bullet holes and all. Wyatt Earp's Saloon, the Oriental is now a clothing stored but has the original Saloon doors on display inside. The Tombstone Epitaph has reprints from the time the Earps lived there. Wyatt Earp III played Billy Claiborne in the movie. People still cary guns and you can have your son or daughter hanged by the Tombstone vigilantes. Never forget the look on my son's face when gun wielding vigilantes came and arrested him while were shopping! Gave him a trial, convicted him and hung him. He was not sure if it was real until they took the noose from around his neck after I got pics. The Clanton's and Earps are still there and don't like each other.

"Cowboys" was the name of the gang. Cowboys in general were laborers. They weren't called cowboys at this time (the 1880s). They were called drovers. A lot of other things about this movie are more authentically western: lawmen did use shotguns -- not revolvers, which were inaccurate and not well manufactured; cowboy hats didn't have all those fancy creases, and most drovers wore on their heads whatever they were wearing when they left home -- derbies were common, and Stetsons were too expensive, at $5, for men to whom $5 was a week's pay; guns were generally left at the sheriff's office and gun control was rather strict -- you'll notice that part of the reason for the shootout at the O.K. Corral was that the Clantons and their allies were carrying guns in the city limits. (The shootout lasted about 30 seconds and happened in a narrow alley. It wasn't like the movie.) Wyatt's wife Mattie was addicted to laudanum: opium dissolved in alcohol. It was thought to be a cure-all. Babies' milk was sometimes spiked with the stuff to keep them quiet. (Very quiet.) All lot of those prim Victorian ladies were stoned on it much of the time. I'll tell you what, young fellow: no woman can resist a challenge. You pay attention to your mom about that. Doc Holliday (he was a dentist) and Big Nose Kate (Mary Katherine Horony) -- the Hungarian refugee who was his sidekick -- were still together when Doc died. I guess they figured she was one too many characters in the later parts of the movie. Kate lived until 1940. Wyatt had an incredibly checkered career after the period covered in the movie. Among other things, he refereed boxing matches. He was accused (correctly) of being involved in the fix of a bout between Sailor Tom Sharkey and Bob "Ruby Robert" Fitzsimmons in 1896. Fitzsimmons was heavyweight champion at the time. Wyatt became friends with early cowboy-movie stars William S. Hart and Tom Mix. Charlie Chaplin was in awe of him. His relationship with Josephine was not as heartwarming as the voice of Robert Mitchum makes it seem. He had affairs and she was tough and gave him hell over them. She didn't attend Wyatt's funeral. People who knew the two of them said she didn't seem to care much when he died. Wyatt died in 1929 at the age of 80. Josephine died in 1944, aged 83.

James Butler Hickok, Wild Bill, was indeed a prolific shootist. In a gunfight in Springfield, Missouri, in the town square, Hickok shot his opponent from a distance of 75 yards, not feet, YARDS! With a revolver! He hit him in the ribs. His fame began at Rock Creek Station in Nebraska. The "fight" was so embellished that it made Hickok a legend. The old Rock Creek Station buildings have been rebuilt and are in a state park. A good traveling stop. Mark Twain mentions stopping there on his trip to California. Earlier, Kit Carson and John C. Fremont stopped there.

The sheriff, Fred, that was killed in the street by Curly Bill, was played by Harry Carey, Jr. He was a great character actor and was in more than 90 movies, mostly westerns, and was a frequent co-star of John Wayne. In his very early days he was a stunt rider of horses. He and Ben Johnson, another actor in a huge number of Westerns, were in a lot of movies together. The entire cast did a wonderful job with this film. Val Kilmer deserved an Acadeny Award!

One of my favorite movies and definitely the best of the modern westerns. Doc Holiday had all the best lines in this movie. It's weird to think that Wyatt Earp lived so long into the 20th century. He died just a few years before my parents were born. The scene where Wyatt wades into the creek really happened, according to written accounts of the time. All the actors grew their own mustaches for this film except for the actor who played Behan. He was also filming another film at the time and had to be clean shaven, so he wore a false mustache in this film. Some great classic westerns you might want to check out are High Noon, the original Magnificent Seven, Once Upon a Time in the West, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Has your mom ever seen Kurt Russell in Escape From New York?

There is a little controversy about who actually directed the movie, George P. Cosmatos is listed as the director in the credits, but Kurt Rusell claims to have who directed the movie at the studio's request, but he did not wish to be credited with directing duties. So Cosmatos was something of a Ghost Director. The original director Kevin Jarre was quickly fired soon after production started reportedly because he was overwhelmed with directing duties and that's when Kurt Russel took over. I'm not certain if Russell has ever talked about it since Cosmatos passed away many years ago. In 1994 Kevin Costner starred in the movie Wyatt Earp but I don't think it was anywhere near as popular as Tombstone.

Val Kilmer is known for going way beyond in his preparation. Lost a lot of weight for this role and Practiced Chopin's Nocturne in E minor for months for that brief scene. Regarding the glorious accent: Kilmer studied with a linguist to very perfectly mimic the exact accent a Georgia Gentleman would have had in the late 1800's, as Doc Holliday grew up well-to-do and very well educate in Georgia.. the epitome of a refined southern gentleman. Had to quit his dentistry practice (why he was called "Doc") because patients weren't exactly thrilled about a TB infected dentist coughing in their faces.

While this movie has some typical hollywood enhancements, the basic story is factual. The movie also compresses some events which is understandable. For instance, Doc didnt arrive in Tombstone until several months after the Earps. And, Virgil and Morgan were shot three months apart. And, Wyatt was not at Docs bedside when he died. Ringos body was found propped against a tree, his feet wrapped in clothing and his gunbelt on upside down, a hole in the left side of his head. The killer has never been determined. I think this is the best western ever made. Really enjoyed your reaction to it.

I really enjoy reactions to "Tombstone" because it's my all-time favorite western, but okay, once again, I have to speak up in defense of the women. The guys did not drop their girlfriends/wives along the way, but the movie did. Apparently, the final edit cut out almost all of the women's stories. This made both Josephine and Kate look very bad, unfairly so. All the couples were common-law marriages, not legal marriages. Basically, they were boyfriends/girlfriends who stayed together long enough to be considered as good as married. Mattie was not a "good woman" by 19th century standards. All the Earp brothers common-law married women who had worked in music halls and/or as prostitutes, which is how they met them. We should not judge the women for their histories, because there were very few other kinds of jobs for women in those days. As far as I'm concerned, Mattie was a normal, morally okay person, but I live in the 21st century. Even her addiction was no more her fault than anyone victimized by opioids today. As for Josephine, Wyatt never married her, either, in all their 47 years. It should be noted that Wyatt didn't cheat on Mattie because he didn't take up with Josephine until well after Mattie died. In reference to Doc's girlfriend, Big Nose Kate Horony, not only did she not get dropped along the way in real life, she was actually there when Doc died, helping to care for him. They had a long, volatile relationship. They fought a lot, broke up a lot, and got back together a lot. Kate nursed Doc through some of the worst bouts of his illness, and never tried to force him to change his ways. And as I said, she was there with him at the end. She did marry another man after Doc had passed.

It's noticeable when Wyatt is holding Morgan as he's dying, Wyatt is rubbing his hand which is covered in 'blood' that is made to look shiny and wet, on Morgan's forehead but Morgan's forehead is clean.

Love the movie and the reaction. If you like this you may like Sunset which is a story of Wyatt Earp's later life with James Garner as Wyatt and Bruce Willis as Tom Mix, an early actor in westerns. It is very likely loosely based on true events but its a fun ride.

The actress Josaphine (Wyatt Earps future wife) during the OK Corral fight was shown at the photographer doing partially nude photos, was wrongly timed. She did have this photo taken in reality and if you search it you will find and see it. Much of this is true but with Hollywood licence they do enhance events and condense the time frames to fit into the film.

The portrayal of the gunfight at the OK Corral was choreographed from the Coroner's inquest, right down to the placement of the combatants and who shot whom, and in what order. Hollywood took license with Doc's five shot double barreled shot gun and his two 60 shooters. Sheriff Behan was the head of the Democrat Party in that area, which gave him much control through the many positions that he held. It was extremely lucrative. The "Cowboys" were the enforcement arm of the Democrat Party. U.S. Grant(R) was President. Hence, the territorial Governor was a Republican and, so US Marshall Dake was a Republican. What this film leaves out is that when Wyatt went on his "vendetta ride" is that he was armed with federal warrants for several of "The Cowboys", as the government had decided to clean out this gang of murderers and thieves. Wyatt was finally willing to take the job, after what they did to Virgil and Morgan.

There are videos that discuss how historically accurate this movie is. But you have to take it all with a grain of salt since most of these accounts come from the memoirs of Wyatt Earp. And there are a lot of indications that they may contain exaggerations (or worse). Another way of seeing for yourself what is from the record though, and what is from Hollywood is by now watching the other big budget movie that came out in the same year, Kevin Costner's, WYATT EARP. And therein you'll see all the other A-list Hollywood actors that weren't in this movie. But here are a few things I've learned in researching it. 1) Doc Holiday was known to have killed a guy in a knife fight due to a poker game dispute. 2) Maddie was Wyatt's common law wife by some accounts, but I also understand she was a prostitute who worked in one of the brothels Wyatt was a bouncer for before he went straight. I may be wrong on some of those details though. My memory is not as it once was. 3) The epitaph about Lester Moore on the marker in the Boothill cemetery was authentic. 4) Wyatt is known to have thrown Johnny Tyler out of the Oriental Saloon by his ear. But it happened a few months after they arrived in Tombstone. 5) Sherriff Fred White was actually a young guy but they wanted to find a role for long time westerna actor Harry Carey., Jr. So they cast him as Fred. 6) Wyatt actually testified on behalf of Curly Bill at his trial for killing Fred White and was likely the reason he got off. 7) Wyatt became an wanted outlaw after killing Stillwell at the train station because it is hard to plead self defense when you empty both pistols into a body after bringing it down. 8) There were two other Earp brothers involved in the vendetta ride, James and Warren and another guy named Hairlip Charlie Smith. But for expedience they apparently decided to trim down the posse to five characters. And I'm guessing they also decided the name Hairlip was a little too insensitive for modern audiences. This may also be why they never mentioned that Doc's gal friend is known to history as Big Nose Kate. 9) The shootout at the creek was supposedly a true story with Wyatt essentually cutting Curly Bill in half with his shotgun. And even with all the shooting going on at him Wyatt never got so much as a scratch and the only real casualty he incurred was to his trench coat which was reported to have been riddled with bullet holes. Some people seem to be charmed that way. 10) The shootout at the creek was however the end of the vendetta ride. And with so many against them all wearing badges they decided they had gotten everyone who'd killed Morgan and skedaddled out of the state. The rest of the ride is pure Hollywood. And McMasters was not killed at that time either. 11) Henry Hooker (the rancher played by Charlton Heston) was a real person known to be an ally of the Earps. 12) Johnny Ringo's body was found several weeks later under a tree with a bullet wound to the head and his boots slung over a tree branc which was a common thing to do in the old west to keep snakes from climbing into them while you slept. It was ruled a suicide and Doc Holiday was known to have been in court in Colorado at the time of Johnny's death. 13) And you probably won't like this one but Doc was extremely anti-semitic and it led to a falling out between him and Wyatt for Wyatt's involvement with the actress, Josephine who was Jewish. I prefer this movie's depiction of the larger than life character however so I am not complaining.

There's an awful lot in this movie that's true, and an awful lot that is... slanted in Wyatt's direction. Wyatt's final vendetta against the Cowboys wasn't quite as legal as shown. When the situation became dangerous in Tombstone, the Earps sent their wives away for their safety; Wyatt never sent for Mattie to return but instead, with Mattie out of the way, immediately married the actress. Mattie then tried returning to her old life as a prostitute before dying of an overdose. There was a fourth Earp brother who moved into Tombstone at the same time; we don't see him because he was never a lawman, and took no part in any of the drama. Recent evidence surfaced that appears to indicate that Wyatt had a falling out with Doc before he died; Doc did not urge Wyatt to pursue the actress, but rather mocked him for taking part in Jewish ceremonies to please her wealthy parents. Doc's female companion was known as Big Nose Kate. It was probably a good idea for the movie to drop her nickname, because they would have had to then explain that she did not have a big nose, but got the nickname from her habit of sticking her nose into other people's business. Despite all that, this is considered the most faithful dramatization of the incident at the OK corral. There really was a church burning that day, entirely by coincidence. An awful lot of this legend is true and false, because everyone at the time had their own version of events and axes to grind, and published wild, embroidered accounts for profit.
