Tomato Frog Care

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Tomato Frogs are one of the most popular of all pet frogs. They are hardy creatures and fairly easy to care for. But, they are amphibians, and as such they have some very specific needs in order to thrive in captivity. In this video I show you how I take care of my tomato frog, Scarlet, and go over everything you need to know in order to take care of your own tomato frog. Please feel free to leave me any comments or questions in the comment section below.

    got my own pair of 1 year old Tomato frogs , female and male. Super easy to care for , and the colors pop as they get older. 1 super red and 1 super yellow. Love them , never made any noise , eat well.

    Females are usually more red and males are usually more orange and yellow. If your yellow one is a male you’ll eventually hear it croaking. Scarlet doesn’t croak a lot, but when he does I can here him from almost anywhere in my house. It’s always a nice surprise to hear him.

    I am so happy to see you wearing gloves. I've been fascinated with these guys for decades. So many people on here just handling their D. Antongilii's with bare hands. One that's harmful to the frog. Two it can be hramful to the handler. Their toxins can cause extreme allergic reactions in humans if it gets in the eyes or mouth.

    This is a great video. My tomato frog hasn’t been eating lately and sometimes will eat superworms but won’t eat dubias or crickets. I thinks he’s always too stressed out when I feed him. As soon as he can see me he just hides and doesn’t even look at any of the food. Even if I just put the crickets in there for him he just doesn’t go for it. I’ve left them in there overnight and still all there. He seems pretty fat but idk how long they can go without eating.

  • @WonderfulWorldReptiles

    @WonderfulWorldReptiles

    Thanks. Well, I don't even try to tong feed Scarlet because he just won't eat that way for me. He also never eats in front of me. I almost wouldn't know that he eats except for the fact that he poops, so I know he eats. As long as his body condition looks good and I see that he poops I feel pretty confident that he's fine. I just put several crickets in his enclosure every two or three days and let him do the rest. Frogs of all species are generally pretty skittish animals. So I think them not wanting your interaction with them is pretty normal.

    Thank you so much for this video! I just got one of these adorable angry lookin little dudes, and there is a severe lack of good youtube videos about them! One thing I'd like to hear abit more about - What kind of substrate do you use? I have a mix of coco fiber and spaghnum moss, but maybe some more soil type of substrate is better for them to burrow in? Thanks again!

    So would like 70 or 72 degrees in my home be too cool for my froggy? I want to avoid artificial heat if possible but I typically keep my home around 69 degrees, I’d be willing to turn it up, but not by much. I live in Virginia so it’s typically quite warm in spring and summer, and in winter I would consider a heating pad to ensure my froggy friend was warm enough

  • @WonderfulWorldReptiles

    @WonderfulWorldReptiles

    I’ve seen some people say that tomato frogs like a little higher temperatures, like close to 80. I also saw someone add a small heat mat the the side of their enclosure. But that worries me. Temperatures too high can be very bad for frogs. I don’t use any supplemental heat with any frogs. I try to be a little conservative about temperatures for frogs because a little low is not as bad as too high. The temperature in my reptile room stays around mid 70s during the day and drops to high 60s or 70 at night. If you do use any heat source be careful. Use a thermostat and monitor it closely. Mid 70s would be good. Low 70s is not that bad, but I wouldn’t keep it below 70 during the daytime. I hope that helps.
