Tom Waits - "Goin' Out West" & Interview (Live on Arsenio Hall, 2002)
Музыка
Tom Waits interview & performance of "Goin' Out West" from the album 'Bone Machine' live on The Arsenio Hall Show in September 2002
Lyrics
Well I'm goin' out west
Where the wind blows tall
'Cause Tony Franciosa
Used to date my ma
They got some money out there
They're giving it away
I'm gonna do what I want
And I'm gonna get paid
Do what I want
And I'm gonna get paid
Little brown sausages
Lying in the sand
I ain't no extra baby
I'm a leading man
Well, my parole officer
Will be proud of me
With my Olds 88
And the devil on a leash
I know karate, Voodoo too
I'm gonna make myself available to you
I don't need no make up
I got real scars
I got hair on my chest
I look good without a shirt
Well I don't lose my composure
In a high speed chase
Well my friends think I'm ugly
I got a masculine face
I got some dragstrip courage
I can really drive a bed
I'm gonna change my name to Hannibal
Or maybe just Rex
I know karate, Voodoo too
I'm gonna make myself available to you
I don't need no make up
I got real scars
I got hair on my chest
I look good without a shirt
I'm gonna drive all night
Take some speed
I'm gonna wait for the sun
To shine down on me
I cut a hole in my roof
The shape of a heart
And I'm goin' out west
Where they'll appreciate me
Goin' out west
Goin' out west

That’s how I discovered Tom Waits. I was in HS at the time. He was playing on the Mike Douglas show. It was a life changing event. I’ve been hooked ever since. Mike had so many amazing guest stars. Far from a gossip show! So much talent.

Description says 2002. It was probably more like 1992 when Bone Machine came out. What an album! One of a kind.

Love it. Love it. Love it. The world needs more Tom Waits right now imho. Cryptic social commentary via the medium of unique music to give people pause for thought, to doubt, to be cynical and wistful all at the same time. It just seems appropriate for our times.

Lucky man you are!
I saw Tom Waits at the Santa Cruz civic auditorium in 1978 or 1979, when he was touring for his Blue Valentine album. At the time I had no idea how privileged I was to see him perform live.

One of the greatest interviews ever. "I like Keith--- he's good with animals"
Got to see Tom in Kansas City at The Up Town Theater in the early 1980s, he had a 3 piece band and he was great, what a wonderful artist

Oh rad, The Heart of Saturday Night from that show is phenomenal. You can find it on youtube. Edit: Show is from '79, not sure if it's the one you were at. Edit 2: looked it up, '82 show, great setlist... carry on.
He’s out on the edge and right down the middle all at the same time.

What a pleasant notification..
Tom waits to what awaits, absolute nailer ❤️
Tom Waits is, without a doubt, the sexiest and most sensual man I’ve ever seen. I am in my 60s, and I find absolutely everything about him intensely sensual. He is an example of an individual who as he has aged, has retained a profound creative energy. I cannot think of a better example of a human being who has aged so magnificently. I’ve been studying his writing, music, and performances this summer and sometimes the depth of intensity that pumps out of him is so great I feel myself being transformed and transported to a place I’ve never been before.

masterpiece!!
His voice on this one puts growlers to shame. What a graspy bowl of cereal.
As a Tom Waits sound forger I appreciate his art. Sadly I won't be able to paint this one until I'm 96 and my voice is more manageable- still I'm searching the underworld for nicely distorted megaphones and prison doors from Folsom...
To me, THIS is the only highlight from the arsineo hall show from 1989 to 1994, that's it!!

I lived through this and didn't realize how important to popular culture it would become. Praise Tom Waits.
Awesome singer. Awesome band. Like the late Chuck, he's Extremely Cool, and extremely underrated. Can't wait for the next record
The hardest thing to come out that year.
wow - the camera work is surprisingly fitting.
Tom waits. Gentle giant of music. The "conundrum". Even the name for a musical instrument made from farm machinery has a cool sounding name. He's just so cool. But a quiet guy. Completely unpretentious and witty.

I saw Tom Waits in The Olympia Theatre in Dublin back in 1981. `At least i think i was there`! Slainte.
Tom Waits at his Beefheartesque best. Plus Joe Gore on fantastically tasty guitar playing two parts at once.
Oh my goodness 😍 I've been waiting for this (ie a halfway decent quality video upload) now for goin on 25 years!!! This is leaps and bounds better quality than that of what has been in circulation for the past 30 years, THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting it! PS Hopefully someday we will see an actual high resolution source transfer of this amazing footage appear somewhere or be officially released or something like that (in my dreams LOL) but until then, this will absolutely do THANK YOU!

@HarlanDorman
Жыл бұрын
@@Vengetuen_Wraith yeah I'm not referring to a first or second third generation cassette recording like what this clearly is, what I was referring to, is the studio footage itself. There is indeed high resolution footage that exists obviously in the vault of whoever owns The arsenio Hall Show content. Much like Star wars or something, just to make a strange but equally accurate comparison to what I meant. But so yeah, I was referring to like the studio itself releasing best performances or season of arsenio Hall Show episodes or something, in which it would obviously indeed be in clear nice upscaled resolution, but with that said, I do agree with you in the sense that I highly doubt what I just mentioned will ever come to fruition, and with that being there reality of the situation, unfortunately you are correct in that, without the involvement of whatever studio owns arsenio Hall Show choosing to produce and release the show on DVD box set or something like that, I'm indeed all we have to look forward to and sort through is different generations of VHS recordings. Super sucks. But hey, we can hold bread 🤞😊

That date is incorrect. This was in September 1992, not 2002. The Arsenio Hall Show had its last season in 1994.
Tom mutha f*ckin” Waits. Cannot be copied, imitates, or replaced. As to the host of the show, and with all due respect, I would bet Mr. Hall $100 that he didn’t make it through 2 songs of “Bone Machine” before he shut it off and said, “what in the hell is THAT stuff??”
I don't think this was 2002. More like 1992. Awesome performance, though.

Although only a short section of it is used, Goin’ Out West is on the Fight Club soundtrack. When the barman with th big mutton chops and grey hair locks up Lou’s Tavern and there’s that cool steadicam shot descending into the basement with all the members. That’s just before Lou of Lou’s tavern introduces himself and Tyler Convinces Lou to let them keep the basement by allowing himself to be pummelled by Lou’s bodyguard, then bleeding and belching blood all over him. “You don’t know where I’ve been, Lou! You don’t know where I’ve been!”
You are the man Tom.
Great clip of a great artist.
Forte!!
Love Tom waits!
I find the people who turn their nose up at Tom Waits tend to all share certain personality traits. Then those that either love him or at the very least have profound respect for his craft, also sharing common traits. Tom really is an enigma in this way I believe.
He's right .. not everyone looks good without a shirt...

I don't think this was 2002, I think it was 1992. I saved it on a VHS tape, which I have still watched over the years! To this day I still don't understand the line about little brown sausages lying the sand! What the heck is that about?

This is in the early 90's
Jesus Gonna Be Here, mentioned in the interview is also in the soundtrack to an underrated, semi autobiographical film Called Domino, starring Kiera Knightly (grrrrrow) and Micky Rourke. Tom plays the part of a manic, mystic, preacher, driving a big old convertible Cadillac appears singing his song Jesus Gonna Be Here, then offers them a prophesy.
Man I miss Arsenio Hall

Wow, who knew Kramer was such a great musician !!!
Arsenio:"what was it like working with Keith Richards?" Tom Waits: "he's good with animals." 😂😂😂 That line kills me every time

I was waiting for distortion
For a second I thought the thumbnail was Kramer from Seinfeld.
Keith Richards sounds like a tender hearted man
There’s something missing in this live performance compared to the studio version. I think it’s a heavily distorted, grungy guitar which gave the studio song a wonderful brutality. Shame the band couldn’t reproduce it here.
Arsenio was mainstream but he always had cool musicians and bands on the show.

Late night with the Devil
This was in the 90s too. I can imagine a lot of folks waiting to see an interview with some Hollywood arsehole and there's this far-out dude talking about making instruments from farm machinery. Tom's too cool for most of celebrity worshipping, disposable pop culture obsessed middle America to recognise how cool he really is. And he's just a quiet guy who loves to create. Doesn't try to be cool. Doesn't try to be anything. I like that Arsineo actually asked about specific aspects of Tom's music instead of small talk on most chat shows... And the joke about who Tom's favourite "new kid" (of new kids on the block, boyband) was. I don't think tom knew what he was talking about, which is why Arsineo moved swiftly on.
2002? 10 years earlier me thinks
