Tom T. Hall Ballad of Forty Dollars Lyrics
The man who preached the funeral
Said it really was a simple way to die
He laid down to rest one afternoon
And never opened up his eyes
They hired me and Fred and Joe
To dig the grave and carry up some chairs
It took us seven hours
And I guess we must have drunk a case of beer.
I guess I ought to go and watch them put 'I'm down
But I don't own a suit
And anyway when they start talkin' about
The fire in Hell, well, I get spooked
So, I'll just sit here in my truck
And act like I don't know 'I'm when they pass
Anyway, when they're all through
I've got to go to work and mow the grass.
Well, here they come and who's that
Ridin' in that big ol' shiny limousine
Mmh! look at all that chrome, I do believe
That's the sharpest thing I've seen
That must belong to his great uncle
Someone said he owned a big ol' farm
When they get parked I'll mosey down
and look it over, that won't do no harm.
Well, that must be the widow in the cr
And would you take a look at that
That sure is a pretty dress
You know some women do look good in black
Well, he's not even in the ground
And they say that his truck is up for sale
They say she took it pretty hard
But you can't tell too much behind the veil.
Well, listen ain't that pretty
When the bugler plays the Military "Taps"
I think that when you's in the war
They always (hide 'n) play a song like that
Well, here I am and there they go
And I guess you'd call it my bad luck
I hope he rests in peace, the trouble is
The fellow owes me forty bucks.

He will be missed by everyone who loves a good song. Rest in peace, my mentor, my hero.
The Greatest Country song writer of all time.
Don't build them like they used to. The world's a little darker now. God speed Tom T.
One of his best, although I must admit that I never heard a bad Tom T. Hall song; each one is a gem in its own right.
this is a brill song
One of my all-time favorite songwriters and story tellers. Thank you for all of the good memories, Tom T. RIP.
If someone yelled out" Tom T Hall "it would certainly get my attention! Storyteller and then some, plus.
He was always so insightful.
I love all his songs. He had such a unique way to sing and tell a story. With a marvelous voice. Thank You ! Tom T.
Ah! This is just GREAT!
They don't make em like that no more
Good old country music 🎶 way better than the crap today or in past 20years. Luv it 💓
Great poet singer miss ya Tom T
R.I.P. Tom never has been a better storyteller!

R.I.P MR TOM T HALL
Thanks for another great video!
This was my favorite TT Hall tune, along with Clayton Delaney (which Waylon and Willie did a fine interpretation of). The lyric seems to put things in context but never takes itself too seriously, which is what Tom gave us - a way to look at life and come to grips with it. He is already missed.
RIP Storyteller 😢
RIP Tom. Dang I didn't know until today. 23 Nov. 2021. He passed back in August! Dang it!!! I love his music.

He was one of my favorite artists in the 1970's when I was a kid. The ultimate storyteller. Some people probably dont know that he wrote Harper Valley Pta a few years earlier.

We wore his 8 tracks out when I was young
One of his best. Great song and great performance by the legend, Tom T Hall. Interesting that he is using a guitar strap. He usually doesn't.
Merry Christmas, thanks for a top notch channel! All the best to you.

He'll soon die, if it makes you feel any better.
Great song great artist. Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash covered it.
Loved this song ( and "Old Dogs..." especially. My Dad loved ""Clayton Delaney".) Saw a solo performance of Forty Dollars recently. It was clearly backed up by a tape of the album performance. The music sounded identical to the studio version, and why would you hide a band behind a curtain?
The tune for this song reminds me of another song but I can't think what it is???

@@joes4690 Thank you so much for answer; I collect (I'm interest for) all "things" about Tom T. Hall's musicians, recordings, engeneer. As myself (bad) musician (lead guitar, dobro -not slide-, electric bass,) since 1959, I learn so many from (thanks to) all musicians he recorded in Nashville from 1969 to 1985. 39.95 and 40 bucks... with only one plug nickel in between...think I'll get on my ride and slide on down to 6&5... for some kinds new year dig...and pay back that 39.95 but should it be found I got there late or simply didn't show...go looking on that hillside..where perhaps I took my final slide but know this I always meant to pay that 39.95and as for that plug nickel it got stuck in that machine whose arm I pulled unforseen hoping to get redeemed and that's the total of my story but I will edit out all the nonsense that got stuck somewhere between here and the unforeseen... though it could be that I am just of the unredeemed.so it might seem.. don't ask no questions... my brain is already fried that perhaps contributed to that last slide... even though I thought it was just a fun ride down a slippery slope... problem being it was cold at the bottom of that slope but closed my eyes shrugged my shoulders and said ... well that's how you rope a dope laughing out loud cuz that's the way I cope... and I'm outa hope to climb back up that slippery slope... now that's three slopes for the price of one.. calling it even for the dope I am... still going to scramble down to 6 &5 regardless the fireworks I find at 9&8 or what is my actual fate. but whatever it's much better than what's been transgressing as of late... rather have that slate cracked over my head.than all this nonsense going on like an idiot box boxing us in toxing lies that should just make us all to cry... now don't be an anti-vaxer... that could just tax or wax y're....,... or sling some mud into your sty...why...why... though don't ask Captain Bly... still I like the chances better at 6&5... being just a five and dimer you know...and a little bit more on the slower side by this time of history's creeping ride.still you can't have my taxes... though you can that 39.95...and you can have that plug nickel...it ain't doin me no good.... all of me why not take all of me...
