Background: Tom Scott arranged the horns for Aja and a few track off Gaucho. He also played various iconic horn parts such as the sax solo on Black Cow, the Lyricon motif in Peg, the sax on Gaucho, and various other horn parts throughout Aja and Gaucho.🎷

The first job I ever had as a concert lighting designer was an international tour with Tom Scott in 1979.... I think ?. We had such a great band on that tour,Vinnie Colaiuta Richard Tee, Carlos Rios and so many others. Fast forward to 2000, after lighting many different acts all over the world I landed the Steely Dan gig. I guess I passed the audition cuz I lasted 17 years with them. Two of the most important people in my career right here folks...What a pleasure listening to this great interview. Thanks TS, Jp

Tom, I just came across this. You allowed me to go backstage with you at the Bottom Line on my 20th birthday. I was doing college PR for your record company. We spoke a lot about Don, Walter and SD as they are my favorites. You probably were about to record Gaucho as Aja was a year old. We shared a cigarette and spoke about your background and music. You were (and are) the Nicest music star that I've ever met! When Richard Tee and Stuff came in, I knew it was time for me to go, but the memories still stay with me. BTW- flash forward two years, I'm DJing in a Miami club and had the great pleasure to meet Rick Derringer. He spoke very well about you and too was the greatest rock star that I ever met. He did talk about the exact nuances that every musician who comes in to work with SD has to go through.

Don rarely laughs, and I appreciate that. Too much laughter becomes an affect. Zappa was similar in that respect. Tom Scott’s interview voice reminds me somewhat of the late Regis Philbin.

Estimated Prophet from the Grateful Dead’s ‘77 album Terrapin Station reminds me so much of tracks from Aja and of course as I discovered decades later the common denominator was the wonderful Tom Scott horns. Good job guys.

It seems to me that Donald is more comfortable being interviewed by people in his "scene" like how he's pretty bouncy and improvisational here and with that leo dude. While in the interview with that tonight show band leader he seems like he wants to jump out the window.

Great Interview, here. Dan & Fagan fan (and fan of yours since the 70's) I'll never forget the first time we we went to the Village Vanguard in 1991. It was Branford Marsalis, Tain, Kenny Kirkland, and others. Basically Leno's 1st Tonight Show band right before they got that gig. Being a drummer and sitting 3 ft from Tain's kit as they blew, and improvised on fast Bop at warp 22, for 2hrs straight, without a single break was a total mindblowing experience. Then being able to talk to tain about speed/technique afterward was magical. Being from Westchester, and growing up with all Classic Rock got me into Jazz late. But better late than never. Later on, becoming a big fan of Krantz/Carlock/Lafave in 97, (and studying Keith's confounding left hand ghost note, displaced beat virtuosity from 3ft away) and finding out in 2001 that Fagan & Becker came by the 55Bar to check him out. Then hired Keith (still hired!) shortly after, is still something I can't wrap my head around. Then Bowie hiring Donny McCaslin, Lafave, and Guliana out of the 55 later on was surreal.

Like Donald Fagen, I"m not fond of the "blareyness" of a trumpet's high notes. Many trumpeters I've heard live consistently played "sour" notes when they went high, except the AMAZING Sal Marquez when he was with Zappa.
