What an amazing performance! Damn, I miss Tom Petty.
Ridiculously good - best cover band ever
You can always hear the byrds influence in Petty’s music Tom was an incredible talent with arguably the greatest rock band with the e street right there with them

It gives me chills even on record… can’t imagine what this would’ve felt like live in person.

Excellent!
I always said Tom Petty's guitar sounded a whole lot like Roger McGuinn's. Now I see why. I sure do miss this guy.

Great song by Gene Clark and a doorway to Trane's modal genius for those curious to hear the source of McGuinn's 12string soloing.
I'm in love all over again!

Nope
Tom was a great singer and songwriter but also could play so many great songs by other musicians rip tom
I thought the drums were great! I love this song and this version.
Awesome
Thank You for posting!
OK let's be clear, this Tom & the HeartBs playing a Byrds original WITH Roger Mcguinn of those same Byrds on his signature Rickenbacher leading the charge...great collaboration between the two and if you want to hear more of the two together check out "King of the Hill", which they each did a studio version of together...personally I like Mcguinn's produced version of it best...
Beautiful version! Tom Petty forever. I also love Robyn Hitchcock’s version.
Great cover version indeed because justice was done to this song. Tom was great in covering material from other artists.
Not sure how much rehearsal they had leading up to these Fillmore shows with McGuinn but either way, the fact that they nailed this live on the spot just goes to show how incredibly professional the Heartbreakers were...
All the great rock&rollers are dying off, unfortunately.
Would pay for video

Me too!! I want to know which guitar Mike played on this song.

@@s2seltaeb FYI that lead guitar is for sure Roger McGuinn playing his Rick 12, but sounds like maybe Mike is probably playing a Rick 12 too. Someone correct me, but sounds like 2 Ricks.

@@neilanderson9151 yes for sure to Roger on Rick 12. I’m so curious to know if MC would have stayed with a 6 to let Roger have all the 12-string moments. I’ll listen again tomorrow in headphones.

@@s2seltaeb Yeah maybe he would do that. And I will say sometimes Mike gets his Fender Broadcaster (a pre-tele) to sound like a 12. But my bet is that they are doing a sort of “dueling 12 string thing.” For what it’s worth I have seen Mike and Tom both play 12 strings and it was glorious. Lmk what ya hear :)

@@neilanderson9151 After putting on the headphones (big ol' headphones!) and listening a few times the night I got the CD set downloaded, I've come to the conclusion that the intro and the first solo at about 2:00 in is McGuinn. His Ricks sound like no other, highly customized, as was his original 360. He plays his signature series Ricks last I heard. Built in compression, right in the guitar. The second solo I think is Mike with his Rick 330 12-string. Definite tone change, and the playing style is a bit more aggressive. Having heard Mike's 330 up close (at the stage in a small club, with his band the Dirty Knobs), I would bet money that's Mike in the second solo. That section ends with both of them dueling a bit. Man, the Heartbreakers knocked this out of the park! The vocal harmonies, Howie Esptein's bass...perfect.
Yo Skippy doooo! What up?

Never knew this existed. They nailed it even the Byrds couldn’t play it. They used The Wrecking Crew I believe, someone correct me if I’m full of shit.

@@mathewmcdonald3657 The Bryds played on Eight Miles High. Only 2 songs from their first LP had the Wrecking Crew (Mr. Tambourine Man & I Knew I'd Want You) because their producer wanted to use them instead for their first single. This song is from third LP which Bryds played on every song.
My favorite is Free Falling.....

Good one. Also the song I need to know
Cool version, but as a professional drummer, Steve totally over plays here. The drums distract far to much from the substance of the song.

Drummer and I can’t agree. It still grooves and still creates that hypnosis you need for psychedelic rock. I actually really like the funk ghost notes tbh. It’s more of a Hendrix Experience/Who vibe, which still seems on point to me. If you don’t want a new version, listen to the Byrds version, yes?
