Tom Petty - Lost Highway

Great quote from Johnny Cash. Amazing song by Hank Williams. And a sweet performance by Tom and the Heatbreakers. My first youtube post, I put it on the web because I couldn't find it on the web.

My husband died almost 10 months ago. Today was a very hard day for me and a friend sent me the link to this song...he didn't know I was having a hard day, yet here I am...the fact that my husband looked so much like Tom Petty and loved his songs...my friend who sent this link...I know God is watching...and maybe...my husband is, too. RIP Robbie.
Hank covered this one but it was written by a blind country singer named Leon Payne while he was waiting on the side of the highway for a ride back home for his mother's funeral.

He was in a Salvation Army homeless shelter for men when he wrote this...
"Ain't that a great fucking song", said with such passion, feeling and meaning. Legend.
Tom Petty is undeniable but this made me appreciate Hanks vocals even more. Hank was channeling pain that can't be captured easily.

OMG…I was raised on Hank as a young child and grew up with Tom . I used to tease my daughters “ don’t interrupt daddy when he’s listening to Petty “ but tonight on Hanks 100th birthday is the first I’ve heard of Tom Petty doing Hank. Just Awesome bless’em both!
Seven years after the posting & this is the first I've ever heard of Tom Petty doing this cover. Great job!

20 years later I found my way back out that lonesome highway, it was a spiral road 🙏🌟❤️
Hank Williams, Johnny Horton, Tom Petty. All of them delivered a great rendition of this song. RIP Great MEN !! /CD
I have said this before about Hank and it's true for Cash and Petty They delivered simple music in a genius way, all legends sadly gone wish they had left more
Great old Leon Payne song. Hank Williams took it to another level.
Country or rock, Tom Petty was a great singer, song writer. Still missing him today.
Fabulous version of a classic Hank Williams song written by Leon Payne. Superb ....!
Great cover of the legendary, sweet Tom! Now he's singing this amazing song in heaven ,with Hank and Johnny. Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing it.

Hank Williams didn't write this song though he performed it and made it famous. Leon Payne wrote it. A very fine Country song . So fine delivered by Tom Petty. RIP
Think of the tunes both Petty, and Willams are making right now in paradise. 🤠
Tom Petty is being typically humble when he buffers his statements about the current dismal state of "country" music by saying he's not an authority on the genre. First of all, TP is a professional musician to the nth degree ... he knows about composition, content, arrangement, and not just when it comes to rock and roll. He grew up in the South in the 50s & 60s, listening to a variety of music, certainly including country music. Good music is good music, period. I support his recent statements, and I hope it makes a contribution toward the country music industry upping its standards of quality. Thank you, Tom Petty!

Patricia I agree with you 100% about Tom Petty being humble. He is one of the most talented singers I've ever heard. When I read some of the comments people put on here I have to stop and think are they really speaking from their mind or do they even have a mind left to speak from.

I'm a rollin' stone, all alone and lost And for a life of sin, I've paid the cost When I pass by all the people say Just another guy on the lost highway Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine And a womans lies makes a life like mine On the day we met, I went astray I started rolling down that lost highway I was just a lad, nearly 22 And neither good nor bad, Just a kid like you And now I'm lost, too late to pray Lord I've paid the cost on the lost highway Just another guy, on the lost highway (( Isn't that a great fuckin song?))) RIP Tom.. Beautiful song
Miss your music, that song of Hanks was awsome,God Bless you both.
"Too late to prey" was the name of our punk band in high school, always loved Hank and Petty, "great fuckin' song"
I still can’t believe he’s gone.😢
Love Tom Petty, Nice old Hank Williams tune, timeless.
Simply amazing... Tom doing Hank... I'm humbled right now..
Who else misses the fuck out of Tom Petty? I sure do.
“You’re a good man to ride the river with.” If you know what that means you know that’s deep.
With the singing of only one country song, Tom Petty became the best voice in country music...well, along with Johnny Cash.

tgifgoose Naw!!! Tom Petty, the vest, didn't ever seen Bob Dylan sing it on a little 'ol rock documentary by the name of "Don't Look Back," did he? Naw!!! Came out in 1965. Dylan, y'know? The guy Tom Petty, impersonates everytime he opens his big pointy snout. No? Naw!!! He heard it on the radio that morning. "Wrote down the words while driving" with one hand and picked out the chords on his guitar with the other. Oh, look, the vest is impersonating Hank Williams and look, how he has magically tossed aside the Dylan voice aside. Now, that's what most folks call talent. Uhmm. Naw...Hey, Petty, pick up your money and pack up your vest.

Jerry Salmon I’m sure they have now met...✌️
Tom Petty is from the Florida Panhandle. ( part of the deep South ) He was definitely influenced by country music . When he was in the Travelling Wilburys they did a song called " Nobody`s Child ". It was a cover of an old Hank Snow number and one of the saddest songs you will ever hear . I am not saying that Snow was as good as Hank Williams BUT Snow was terrific in his own right .
Wonderful video. Petty is superb and very much missed. So is Hank. A great song!!! Thanks!

I don’t know where to start, the story Tom tells about Cash, Perfectly played by Tom, Hank would definitely approve, then Tom saying how great a fu*cking song it is, it’s the first time He’s played it, heard it this morning, wrote it while driving. This is a great piece of musical history. RIP gentlemen. They’re my top 3 favorite musicians also. Great stuff. “Just a deck of cards, and a jug of wine...And a woman's lies makes a life like mIne”.
Great story about Johnny Cash. Great cover and I want that little mini-Rick mando thing!!
I miss you Dad
RIP Tom Petty
The great ones are all gone now.Gentlemen to better days CHEERS🍸
He would’ve made a great country singer! Awesome twang!
Dam i miss seeing him live love all his music RIP
Rest In Peace ❤❤❤❤❤
Such a great song done so well by Tom and guys.
Wow!! Incredible!! Was led to this song from the George and Tammy series on Showtime. Tom did an absolutely incredible version of this!!!
I can hear this song and feel myself choking up. Just hearing and feeling the pain in the words of it. Hank Williams was a musical genius with a life of pain and anguish in his songs about himself, and never made it to be 30 years old.
How amazing.
Hank Williams the original out law !
Thank God great music is still alive
Great cover. I miss you Tom. I'm so glad I got to see you three times live
I love it.thiers one point in the song.that he really sounds like hank.i love hank sr.he.s the reason i love country music.thru my mom.i think he does a great job on it.and a killer ass band dont hurt either.he.s not makin fun of the song.if you.d listen to the intro he does at the ist.the roots of rock n roll.come from country music.so true.so u haters.dont come on here and ruin all our fun.with ur comments.i love tom petty.i think he.s the best singer/song writer that ever was.i miss his music.
So great so great
So glad Tom did this song. I found this a couple years ago,
Tom's voice was perfect for Hank, or even Ralph Stanley.
Excellent song. Beautiful.❤️🦆

GENIUS....plays it once and it's better than 99% of the so claimed "country artists"....lol
unreal like John Tom reached us deep down in are souls.I feel lucky I got to see johny cash in portland maine.I was 12 and Tom petty on his last tour hypnotic eye.luck could never have enuff of that stuff luck is good .
Hank...perfected it .
Tom, Tom, Tom...you ROCK.
Tom Petty love you.
God Bless Tom. He really wasn't Bob Petty. His voice had a different vibrato from Dylan. I still don't see how Perkins, Cash and Lewis weren't in the Traveling Wilburys? Listen to him saying how fucking good of a song it way. RIP Tom. You deserver all the peace one could ever deserve.
Outstanding
Wow he sounds so awesome I hope he's Jamin with hank on some highways somewhere
