I googled him like 10 years ago bc of the Rebels live version with the confederate flag and came across his hilarious stories from this Tour including the loaded cigarettes, the book having the ending removed and tipping over B Dylan in the porta John. I laughed my ass off!

The way he sings 0:38 "Waaaaayyy tomorrow," is a perfect example of how his voice was not run of the mill but was extraordinary, anyone singing this song in this key would realize the same thing; few can sing like this.

I love how he sings during this period. Been listening much to Southern accents recently and his voice has so much depth. It fits perfect to the lyrics and to the concept of the album.

Miss ya Tom - Thanks for this song. I was born a rebel, on a Sunday morning (May 7th, 1961). And always lived life with one foot in the grave and the other on the pedal. I always defied authority and control and gave those types my middle finger!
Love from India❤️

Right after this originally aired, I knew I had to see Petty live. I saw him last on the last weekend he ever played in 2017 at the Hollywood Bowl. In between I managed to see him a total of 8 times in concert. One of the best. A true believer. R.I.P.

One foot in grave, one foot on the pedal- Alexander Mutitbo
His very best imo- It would be shut down today, but the angst he felt is why I think he wrote it like a "Symphonic ballad"

Such A Great Song !!! OMG !!! Such A Great Live Performance of it too !!! I had just seen in concert 3 weeks before at The Centrum, In Worcester, MA. One of the best concerts that I have ever seen !!!!
If this song were around during the Civil War, the Union forces would never have had a chance against the Confederate army. The South would have emerged victorious, their courage and pride propelled and powered by this anthem.
I am not even American and still get the ref. Ofcourse you get it becuase of American pop culture domination ? No.......because the theme of his lyrics are and have always been universal(well except for the Dixon ref) ! As a 24 year old struggling musician(well not fiscally)from Mumbai where playing drums to "boring commercial music" is the norm to survive , a healthy dose of Tom Petty helps me sleep at ease .
Fokkin A, Classic Tom ... Thanks for posting! Miss him.
All of Tom and the Heartbreakers early albums are just gold.

Lyrics: Honey don't walk out I'm too drunk to follow You know you won't feel this way tomorrow Well, maybe I'm a little rough around the edges Inside a little hollow I get faced with some things sometimes That are so hard to swallow Hey hey hey! I was born a rebel Down in Dixie on a Sunday morning Yeah with one foot in the grave And one foot on the pedal I was born a rebel Well she picked me up in the morning And she paid all my tickets Yeah she screamed in the car And threw me out in the thicket Well I never would've dreamed That her heart was so wicked Oh but I keep coming back Cause it's so hard to kick it I was born a rebel Down in Dixie on a Sunday morning Yeah with one foot in the grave And on e foot on the pedal I was born a rebel Even before my father's fathers They called us all rebels Burned our cornfields And left our cities leveled I can still see the eyes Of those blue bellied devils When I'm walking round tonight Through the concrete and metal I was born a rebel Down in Dixie on a Sunday morning Yeah with one foot in the grave And one foot on the pedal I was born a rebel

You have to be at just the right stage of going bald for the hair to hang like that. It's a short window in a man's life - like a wave you have to catch just right and you don't get another chance!
@viviave8
3 жыл бұрын
In defense of the hair -- if you look at early pictures of him from his 20s and younger he still has the same hairline so I think that's just its natural state. Hey I get my hair as close as I can to Petty style but I'm a girl... so I will never be able to rock those epic sideburns.

His hairline was always high. If he was losing it back then it would've looked alot different in the later years; but it pretty much just stayed put, fortunately lol.
