@@s.sumbrella7616 Great question. I would guess that you would have to formulate your plot more clearly. But as a starter, write down your vague idea and build it more clearly from there. I'm making a video I hope to post today, that started with a vague idea about an injured bird and my "Monkey Mind" (internal chatter) and wrote down my thoughts. As I wrote, starting from the end, or what resulted, it became clearer and clearer to me. It worked for me. The author of this video probably has even better ideas.

Also, great video. I finally know how to get started on my story! UPDATE: I followed this method and have a rough plot outline worked out. I’m going to start scriptwriting soon (I’m making a comic book). If you were curious, the story is between a lone gunslinger who makes friends with a young doctor and tries to uncover an undercover Italian- American mob syndicate taking over a booming western city growing with the industrial revolution.

This just gives shallow structure of the main story objective, of course you would add more depth to it, I hope. I would add introduction of character and scene in the 1st act. 2nd act would be realization of crisis and conflict/friction to work together. 3rd act: parting ways of characters and their struggle. 4th act: realization of same goal and working together. 5th act: climax of working together works out and crisis has been averted. Shorthand: 1: introduction, 2: crisis and conflict, 3: struggle, 4: realization, 5: climax. You can also split each one in smaller pieces and ask the questions: who, what, where, when, why and how?

Hi Ella, best thing is to start getting it down on paper. When you edit it you will see a natural point to make breaks/remove extraneous words and sections. Good luck

Hi Caleb, there is no right or wrong. It sounds like you might need to go from story mapping on to planning first before you get started writing. But if the story heads in another direction as you start writing that is ok too! I spend so long editing and re-writing til i am happy with it. It is all part of the fun. Good luck Tom

Questions I have a couple but I probably asked one? I am beginner and way before I watch this vid, I just start writing and go over it and kinda rewrite but add few words and try to make it better. I like my stories but how you know your target if you are writing blind?.

  • @TomPalmerAuthor

Hi Dawson, sounds like you are already doing a great job! As with everything practice makes perfect. I try to write everyday i can for at least 2 hours and am planning / working the rest of the time. In my latest project I've just completely cut out the first three chapters, loosing several thousand words. But I know the story will be better off for it. My point is, don't give up, keep at it until you feel happy with it. And then show it to someone you trust and get their feedback. Or better still trade and read theirs - start your own writing group. Ask for 3 good points and 3 ways you could improve so they don't shatter your confidence. I completely rewrote my first novel 12-15 times over 20 years ago. I do not regret throwing any of those words away. That process taught me how to write, or rather how to write a story that other people wanted to read. And enjoy reading other people's stories too! Good luck and keep well. Tom :)

@@TomPalmerAuthor Thanks, I like to write mess-up stories, fantasy, inappropriate content. But I do have about thirty projects now maybe I always throw them away and start a new then I go back "Oh I like that, Oh shit but forgot what is about." Actually, you the first KZreadr that actually helps. Also, I have another question Can kids book have minimum gore and blood. Here is the thing age rating suck donkey balls with movies and games you understand it clear but with books the age rating is clear yet it's not if that makes any sense. I Won't give up improve my grammar and rise my vocab. Also, my dang spelling it's awful I feel ashame school isn't good anymore with the same learning speed. I make roleplays on the media for fun and people like it but some don't because boundless writing reason I believe fiction has no limits I am one of those writers. But, anyways I don't care how many projects that I throw even if I want to give up I will not. Yet, that's why I thirst for informants do mind I ask a lot of questions. Sir? Of crouse, you might be busy but there are no writers who will answer me.
