    I'm a huge Buckeye fan, but Nebraska's 94 and 95 championship teams were the most cohesive, powerful and fast squads ever put together. Those were special teams. I watch those games when I was a kid and it was Nebraska who I was cheering for, but not sure why. Maybe since it's the same architect who designed both of our football stadiums, lol. B Ever since, Nebraska is my second favorite team, followed by USC, Penn State in Washington. Those two and see wins by NU made me fall in love with college football. Nebraska's facilities are second to none and with all the wild West craziness of NIL and the portal, college football needs Nebraska back in the top 5 or 10 consistently every year. It's good for college football.

    Not hard to win 250 games quickly when you don't play anyone except Oklahoma. In 1973 - with Devaney's team - Osborne faced the toughest schedule in the country (this is per the USA Today College Football Encyclopedia). They were not in the Top 20 schedule-wise in 1974-75-76-77-79-81-84-85-86-87-88-89-90. They were only ranked 17th in 1993 because they met once beaten FSU in the bowl game (and were robbed in my judgment - severely) and the same in 1994, when they beat Miami and finally won Osborne his first title. They were in 1978, but it was a fluke because OU was a one-loss team and Nebraska played them twice. They were 12th in 1980 when they played three good teams and lost to two of them. They were also 12th in 1982 (and admittedly got messed over by the refs in the Penn State game). They were 17th in 1983 - the so-called greatest team ever - but OU got hosed that time and Nebraska couldn't even beat Miami when it counted. And how is it possible that Nebraska in 1990 played BOTH teams that shared the national championship and still didn't face one of the 20 toughest schedules in the country? Simple - they didn't play anyone else decent. Now to be fair - they did much better starting in 1991...which coincides with Osborne building the 1994-97 monster. Nebraska then faced a top 20 ranked schedule every single year (usually top 12) from 1991-1996. This points out that Osborne LEARNED and built him a decent team that could actually beat good teams. Do you know what Osborne's record against 'teams with 9 or more wins' was from 1974-1993? 18-31 (not counting 9-win N Illinois, who was not big time when they met). In twenty years, he only faced 49 opponents with 9 or more wins (you know - REALLY good teams), an average of just more than two per year, and he lost 60% of them. Do ANY of you think that Chris Petersen is a better coach than Osborne? I don't, but using your argument, he is. He won 84 games in his first eight years at Boise and his percentage (.913) for those years includes FIVE bowl wins in seven trips (he resigned before the last bowl game). Osborne's first eight years gave him a .789 and a 5-3 bowl record, pretty good. What's the difference? The schedule. Neither team won a national title. But Petersen had something Osborne didn't - not one but TWO undefeated seasons. I'm NOT saying Tom Osborne was not a good coach - he was a VERY good coach. But he was not one of the 10 best college football coaches ever. That's all I'm saying.

  • @BigRedRIP

    @BigRedRIP

    What do you think makes a team be a losing team (that Nebraska had to face in those years?) LOSING. To Nebraska/Colorado/Oklahoma/Kansas State. Your argument about weakness of schedule can be summed up by looking at the score in the 95 Orange Bowl against Florida. But before you even rebut my comments, view the announcers and commentators BEFORE the game, and how Nebraska weren't really that good and couldn't play on grass. There were many years in the 74-90 stretch where Nebraska lost games to teams that would have ANNIHILATED a Boise State team from any year. The Fiesta Bowl miracle against Oklahoma put Petersen on the map, but it took 3 miracles in one game to pull it off. With that said, he's doing very well with Washington this year, and will be known as a national champ coach before he retires, for sure. But you cannot compare Boise State losses to Nebraska losses in the 70-90 stretch. The variable you are missing from your comparison argument is not strength of schedule, but rather conference strength (i.e. the Power 5 conferences.) This is why we saw Houston (in the discussion prior to this week about their "dilemma" of not receiving enough votes for the playoffs) lose to unranked Navy. There are conferences that just don't play the caliber of football that is found in power 5 conferences, period.

The whimsical 60-3 run bowl games: 1st bowl. 4th bowl loss in a row to Bobby 2nd This one over a coach the team thought was leaving, which was true days after. A team facing NCAA sanctions which did come down later. 3rd over Spurrier. 11-10 in bowls. 4th over Beamer 11-12 in bowls. Most bowl losses as of 2019 1)Edwards, 2)Osborne, 3) Beamer 5th over Fulmer 8-7 in bowls and a losing record against Spurrier, Richt, Tuberville, Paterno, Saban, Meyer, Miles, Solich, Weiss, and Tyrone Willingham. Edit, this list has at least 5 more. So combined, the last 4 coaches had a losing bowl record 35-38. And this is just bowls. There is so much more about the 60-3 run.

Honestly, Baylor, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Auburn look like the playoff teams now, but if two SEC teams get in, it's gonna be a complete joke. Wouldn't mind seeing the Ramblin' Wreck win out and make it in over FSU though, can't believe they're undefeated. I think you are confusing 1971's final standings with 1994's. The reason for the differences? Wikipedia: "With #2 Alabama, #3 Michigan, and #5 Auburn all losing, #6 Colorado, winner of the Bluebonnet Bowl, rose to #3. In fact, in the final poll, the Big 8 occupied the top 3 spots, with Nebraska claiming all 55 first place votes, Oklahoma #2 and Colorado (whose only losses were to Nebraska and Oklahoma) #3.[4] This is the only time teams from one conference were rated 1-2-3 in the final poll."

    Lol, burlingtonbill1, good on you for chiming in on an ancient (for the internet) comment supporting the 'skers. I'm probably as hammered now as I was making that last post, but I'll be honest- I just throw in the '71 skers to piss off others from my generation that grew up with the 90's run. Every year of football is unique, like a snowflake. That's why I laugh internally when I see rankings of 'best teams of all time' in any sport, because one year's dominance is meaningless in the face of time. I look at the 95 huskers as a worn statue of Tommy Frazier, the head fallen off near the base, which reads, "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair." All that said, I'm super hyped to see Nebraska, Colorado, Miami, and Washington being ranked. I'm also hyped to see people in the salt lake city media suggesting we're going back to the big 12. Because everyone just looks at another conference that is collapsing thanks to Texas and giggles. I hope the kansas and oklahoma schools find power five conferences that suit them, as well as Iowa state. Texas tech could maybe become Washington State University-Lubbock.

    That's too sad and pathetic. Osborne screwed 1) all the team's that believed in Osborne's integrity and 2) the school's reputation that he helped build by playing Lawrence Phillips. And the real kicker, he never reached Phillips did he? Which, as a doctor of psychology, he had to know he never would. It was all about getting that damn NC.

    Disagree. This was a good Miami team but the majority of Miami Hurricanes teams from 1986-92 were far superior than the 1994 squad. Their 1994 team lost at home to Washington snapping their home win streak. The best team Nebraska beat for a title was really the 1971 Oklahoma team. It wasn't in a bowl game but fact is it was the de-facto national title game.
