Hearing such an intellectual discussion of the material is incredible. Both of them being able to talk like this about this movie, and not cut it short. Being allowed to explore each concept and dynamic like this, is just amazing. I would listen to them talk about every movie they love like this for hours. :)

Love that Benedict shared that he had doubts reading the book whether he was the right person for the role, and also Tom saying that the Benedict that he knows is not that character. That someone can pull a character out of themselves so polar opposite and be so utterly convincing is fascinating.

@@twentyfivemelody of course, Anthony Hopkins is always at the very least 'pretty good' in everything he's in (he even managed to elevate the MCU, right?); my thing is listening to 'Batch (as he is referred to in my house cus we are very partial to him) talk about every little nuanced thing he pulled outta his hat for this role, he's just the best - I thought it was completely bananas (putting it mildly 🤬) that he didn't get the gold for Imitation Game, which is one of the best historical biopics ever made! But then last year I saw him in The Electrical Life Of Louis Wain, and it instantly became my favorite film of all time, and cemented him as my favorite living actor. And that movie didn't get talked about by anybody for anything, which is beyond absurd to me. So maybe I'm a wee bit biased 😹

@@tylerpurrden I don’t think you’re being biased. He is that much of a phenomenal actor. Easily at the very top with the greats. I think “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain” debuted with other phenomenal Cumberbatch movies so it got the short end of the stick. But seriously the Batch was robbed in the Oscars. He definitely was the most deserving for his role as Phil Burbanks.

I love how Tom watched analyses of the movie to get a better insight. I too had the impression that Bronco Henry manipulated and groomed Phil as a teenager and it was such a twist that Phil thought he could do the same to Pete and destroy Rose further but was again the one being manipulated instead. I was also kinda sad how nonchalant the family seemed to be after Phil's death. His death felt more like a relief than a loss to them. He was hurting and hurt everyone else around him and had no real opportunity to show or receive love from anyone. The movie really left an impression.

This is the way interviewers should ask questions, like Tom Holland. Sometimes I feel that interviewers always ask questions that actors/actresses try to avoid yet they still ask. As the audience, even I am bothered by it. But I also wonder if the interviewers are forced to ask those kinda annoying questions. Not all interviewers are bad tho, some of them do a pretty good job and ask valid questions. Anyways, this conversation was nice. Love it.

The moment I saw the dissected rabbit I said "Ok, this guy is not as naive as we think" and also, the way the Jane established antrax in the first minutes and in all the movie there was this shadowy antrax floating around, the way that she revealed that Phil does not uses gloves , everything was so subtle. I also thougth that Phil was abused by Bronco by the way he glorifies him, I thought he was gaslighted. Great film, great direction, great cinematography, great performance. Congrats.

Try and do a British accent on a word and see how it feels, even if it sounds strange. You don’t think in another accent, you still think in your own. It’s a learned technical skill until you practice enough to make it feel natural. And if you add a character choice, it might feel more like a specific character. Ben and Tom might hear American characters they’ve played. But in the interview they’re just talking normally. Ben just imitated a random American, same as anyone might imitate something they heard.

It baffles me, that Tom Holland apparently is the first one to point out that the relationship between phil and bronco was abusive…. @@JeffsGoldblum also interesting to consider; had Phil not died would he have sexually abused Peter? or made other advances? as is often said, those who were victims of violence or abuse often grow up doing the same to others. but what I liked, as was said during the discussion, is that Phil's backstory wasn't presented as an excuse or free pass for his misdeeds. I really dislike when we're presented with the sob-story of the 'villain' in entertainment and suddenly everything they did is forgiven and forgotten because they suffered as well. this truly was not the case here in this nuanced movie.

It is very rare that a good film comes along. This is a great film. Be sure to see it. The ending is truly amazing. The more I think about the film, the more I like the film. I plan to see it again.

I did not expect this level good questions from Tom Holland, sorry for my prejudice. Benedict's answers are perfect as always and he was incredible in the movie. I think the video needs a spoiler alert 😊.

It does *not* need a spoiler alert - people shouldn't be watching long form in-depth discussions of movies they haven't seen yet! The whole point is reflecting on the material, which you cannot do without viewing it

I never really thought of the abuse thing that Tom mentioned but it does kind of make sense i suppose. And it kind of mirrors what Phil was going to do with Peter if he'd had the chance. I really felt for Phil too. He's such a damaged, lost soul full of pain, fear and hate.

Excellent conversation overall by both Benedict and Tom. I was struck by Tom's interpretation of the early relationship as abuse and that not being something Benedict had considered. In my work when dealing with young adults, I find it amazing how they have internalized the ideas of age differences in relationships as the fertile ground for abuse. Sometimes, I think they go too far with it, or maybe don't understand the ongoing possibility of power abuse in relationships. I think Licorice Pizza raises that issue--the girl is maybe 25 and the boy is 15, but the power in the relationship is not, to me, abusive. So, I don't know. That really made me think from this discussion.

It is inherently abusive for a child to be in a romantic or sexual relationship with an adult. 15 is a child.

Yeah it's a strange one to work out. Especially if the younger person has feelings of love towards the older person. But then it depends what kind of person the older is, are they manipulating the younger, taking advantage of their feelings. Or are they genuinely feeling something too. A lot of people said they didn't like Call Me By Your Name for that reason, but as far as i remember in the book, Elio is 17 and Oliver is 22 or something. Anyway, nothing's that clear cut black and white, good amd bad. Just like the characters in this film. Phil isn't bad and Peter isn't good, they both have issues and I honestly feel for Phil so much because of what he's gone through and how much he's suffered - whether through abuse or just lost love. He's traumatized and he's a product of a society that would prob have physically abused, maybe even killed him if he's lived his true life. He probably would've ended up like Jack Twist. A really really compelling amd thought provoking movie & book.

@@bearclaws5671 second that. It's abuse because the adult is preying on the child, whether consciously or not. The power dynamic cannot be equal because of the difference in age. Age differences matter significantly more at younger ages than they do at older ones.

Tom Holland and I are the same age. I can't speak for him (obviously) but I know for me and a lot of my friends, something clicks once we reach our mid twenties and we start to become fully aware of certain affects of age difference in various relationships. I certainly know that I now look at some of the people that were in my life from my teens and early 20's and question their mindset/motivations.

It’s multi layered. You can watch it many times and see and hear different themes. Plus it was refreshing not to have bodily sex right in your face but instead symbolism. It was actually more erotic than the bodily grind

George knows, that's why he avoids the anniversary toast in the pub, then only sips. Modern observers would see grooming between Henry and Phil. In George's era, his patience with Phil is a kindness for both of them.

I loved every bit of this. Actor on actor interviews need to happen so much more often because they have insights on their craft that journalists, fans, and even directors just don't possess. I got the same impression that Tom did about the Bronco/Phil relationship, and I think it was interesting that that never occurred to Benedict at all. I hardly recognized Benedict in this film and I was blown away by the other performances as well. Please have Tom Holland watch all the movies and talk to every actor from now on lol.
