Tom Hanks Talks 'Elvis,' 'Saving Private Ryan,' 'Forrest Gump' & More

Ойын-сауық

Tom Hanks is here. You read that correctly. Tom Hanks himself joins ReelBlend to promote his new film Elvis (also starring Austin Butler). Mr. Tom Hanks was generous enough with his time to share stories from across his career, including breaking down some of the moments and cast reactions to filming Saving Private Ryan’s famous opening. He also gives some fantastic advice for young actors and shares an incredible moment from working with Paul Newman on Road to Perdition which informs how he approaches his fellow actors even to this day. The wonderful stories don’t end there, so strap in and enjoy.
Following our interview, we give our reviews for Elvis and even discuss our favorite Tom Hanks movies of all time.

I also really like how open and informative you are about the mechanics of an interview. How important it is to ask something that hasn't been asked before or maybe in a way that also provides the opportunity for the guest to not repeat him/her self, it makes the interview a bit more interesting for them too. Congrats! Keep it up, I'll be here.

I just saw Elvis Monday night on June 27, 2022. I did not realize they shot this film so long. That was unique hearing how long they shot the film for and Elvis stuff vs Tom Hanks part. I did not realize Tom Hanks part was shot less time than Elvis content.

I am so blessed to come across this tonight! Austin is such a remarkable young Man who made movie and movie making become alive again as well as Elvis ! He loved Elvis and wanted to make him and his family proud! He put all the truth he could find so he would come alive! It was a great movie by Baz Luhrman, Christine Martin, Tom Hanks and Austin Butler! I’m so very proud of Austin as he saw a lot of things that many did not know or had not found! God continue to bless you, Austin!❤️🕊🙏

#summerblockbusterblend - Avengers Infinity War. This movie completely shocked me. It seems like every movie ends with the heroes winning, I have never experienced the feeling of walking out of a theater and not knowing the fate of the characters we love! When that movie ended I couldn’t believe that we had to wait a full year to see what would happen next in Avengers Endgame, but all of the theorizing and MCU re-watches within that next year made me appreciate this franchise so much more! And how does the ReelBlend not have 100,000 subscribers?! I get just as excited to listen to this show every Friday(and Monday), then seeing whatever new movie is coming out! A must listen companion podcast for every film that comes out. Sean, Kevin, Jake, and Gabe - fantastic job with every interview you do!

Such a fantastic interview guys! You all really did do a great job of just riffing off of each other, which comes from your excellent prep that you always do! Sean, that one moment wasn’t cringe like you think it was; it seemed so natural at the time. So glad you all had a chance to sit down and talk with him for so long. We are better for it because of the great stories your questions caused him to tell. #SummerBlockbusterBlend is so difficult. Star Wars was the very first movie I saw in theaters, I read up on how the computer effects were done in The Last Starfighter, and there are so many great summer movie memories to choose from, but I have to go with Tim Burton’s Michael Keaton starring Bet- - - Batman! 1989 was the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school, and I had been a Batman fan for a loooong time watching reruns of the 60s TV show and SuperFriends cartoons. A new found friend in high school got me into the darker side of Batman with Frank Miller’s comics, and I was consuming so many great comic books then. Batman ‘89 was the first time I started paying attention to the marketing of a summer blockbuster. Ghostbusters sort of did that, but I just wanted all the toys as a 10 year old; however, Batman kept me wanting more. I searched out any information I could find on the movie without delving into spoilers. I bought magazines, comic books, had the bat symbol poster on my wall, had recorded the Batdance video off of MTV, where my mom thought Prince kept cussing when he was saying the word “funk”. 😂😂 I absolutely didn’t care that Micheal Keaton was Batman; the fact they were giving him the black suit and not making it as cheesy as the TV show delighted me! I don’t know how many times I watched and rewatched that movie in theaters and then on VHS, but it was the first summer blockbuster that completely unlocked my love of movies even more. I still love Keaton and Nicholson’s performances , and I’m so glad it led to the animated series with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill. Hell, even Burton animated a scene in his movie. I continue to love this movie to this day! Keep up all the amazing work guys!

Guys, first things first, I love your show. Been following for some time. I religiously listen to your podcast every Friday and it is a great way to start my day on my way to work. Questions such as the one posed today you might agree is almost impossible to determine since films have such power to delight us, transport us, enlighten us, scare us, make us laugh, cry or get pissed off, sometimes within the same film. I believe is Sean who’s said before that the movies remain the same but we as people are the ones who change and I’ve experienced this with many a film in my time. Ultimately, if I was to narrow down my pick, today, Friday the 24th, I’d go with the incomparable Christopher Nolan’s seminal work in 2010s “Inception”. Good luck with the show. I wish for all you continued success. #summerblockbusterblend

#summerblockbusterblend I've got a bunch but I'll say one of my favorites was seeing Jurassic World 1 at night with a friend of mine. It was the last day of 7th grade and I was about to move overseas in just a few weeks. It was the first time I had gone to go see something at night with just a friend and we snuck chick fil a into the theater which made it feel even edgier. I still love that movie and I think it's a great popcorn action film!

Great episode this week guys! Lots of energy and it was fun to watch!! For my #summerblockbusterblend choice I’m gonna go with Steven Spielberg’s ‘War of the Worlds.’ I feel like this movie gets more hate than praise but it’s a movie I really like and it’s honestly the film that made me want to become a filmmaker. I was young when it came out and during its opening weekend I was on a family vacation and my parents wanted to go out so they dropped me off at the movie theater for the night since they didn’t have a babysitter lol. But they bought me tickets to WOTW and during the scene when the machine rises out of the lake and attacks the ferry boat there’s a moment that just blew me away and it’s such a simple moment. It’s the moment when it tips the ferry over and all the cars start rolling into the water and just before one crashes into Tom Cruise and his kids, the car slams against the railing inches from their face and gives them just enough time to escape. I remember seeing that exact moment and just wondering how they did that and that’s the moment I knew I was going to spend my life trying to get into the movie business. I didn’t know if it would be as an actor or a writer or a costume designer but I knew somehow I was one day going to be involved in filmmaking and now years later here I am two weeks out from premiering my directorial debut in the movie theater I worked in during college. So even though the movie gets hate, it’s my personal choice because it lead down me a road that’s been the most fulfilling thing I’ve done up to this point in my life

#SummerBlockbusterBlend Jaws… I was 8yrs old when it came out in 1975 so I couldn’t see it but I knew grown ups were talking about that summer I got my hands on the paperback and read it.. when the movie was released in 1979 I was 11 & was able to see it.. i walked in when they were repairing the orca & saw Quint get eaten.. Yes the end of the movie.. So I waited in anticipation for it to start again.. That night my mom woke me up because I was screaming & swimming in my bed.. Needless to say that was it I was imprinted for life so much I have a tattoo of the poster on my leg & my license plate is Jaws75. & every June 20th the actual release in 1974 & July 4th I’m watching this perfect piece of Summer Celluoid. So in conclusion Jaws is my always Go 2 Summer Blockbuster

Recency effect makes me pick Cruella for #SummerBlockbusterBlend. I had seen a few movies post pandemic closure (Tenet included), but something about Cruella coming out last summer, I was so looking forward to. I don't usually buy popcorn at the theater, but for this one, I was gonna take my mom, I was gonna get popcorn, and it was the kick-off to my summer of semi-normalcy again! I love a Disney movie, family movie, and you can't go wrong with Emma Stone - perfect casting. The costumes were great, the music was great, the twist was fun, I loved it. Not the traditional pick for a blockbuster I know, but that was my "back to the theater" movie. So for me, it's a meaningful summer blockbuster. Yay movies!
